Philip - Kendal tutor
Information About Philip:
Personal Description:
I am in the final year of a doctorate in Atmospheric Physics, studying the interaction between the aurorae of different planets and their atmosphere. This is done through a combination of observations and computer modelling. My interests outside of this include writing, photography and amateur astronomy, though this last one is fairly limited by the lights of the big city at the moment. Originally, I am from the north of England, a small town called Kendal. My primary and secondary education were taken at local state schools before progressing onto University College London for both my first degree and subsequent doctorate.
Teaching Experience:
I've spent the past four years teaching physics undergraduates in various lessons. These have included practical physics for first and second year undergraduates, as well as first year entries onto the Physics evening class; practical astronomy for first year undergraduates as well as the evening class; mathematics/classical physics problem classes for first year undergraduates and programming in visual basic for the evening classes. I also spent a week in a school in Cornwall talking about the aurora and comets as part of the researchers in residence scheme.
Tutoring Approach:
My approach is to find out how far a student has already got and how sure they are of their current direction. This is done through the setting of small tasks and talking through the important points, helping through the first task or two and letting them be more self sufficient once a particular concept has sunk in. Talking about how these abstract words and equations relate to things in the future sometimes helps to motivate, even if the relation is just to get through an exam to reach a more satisfying level of educational challenge.
