Isobel - Kentish Town tutor

Information About Isobel:

Personal Description:

I am a currently taking a gap year, having recently finished sixth form at St. Paul's Girls' School, where I studied biology, chemistry, maths and physics at A level. I gained high As in these, plus french and economics at AS-level the previous year, and I have a place at Cambridge to study Medicine starting in September 2009. As a result I could also provide help with BMAT preparation for anyone about to apply for medicine at a BMAT university. However, I am leaving the UK in January to volunteer in India so I am only available to tutor for a limited period.

I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have or provide references if you're interested.

Many thanks,
Isobel

Teaching Experience:

This year I have tutored a girl with cerebral palsy who wanted to improve her maths, and I also have a fair amount of 'informal' experience! I have frequently helped my younger sister and friends at school with their schoolwork; in year 11 I agreed to help out a friend of mine who was struggling with GCSE French and we had sessions once a week for a term, during which time her French improved a lot (she got an A after a D in her GCSE mock, which was obviously due to her hard work, but the sessions did help as well).

At the beginning of this year, my biology teacher put me forward for a scheme through which I have been a 'science mentor' to a girl two years below me, helping with her GCSE triple award science. I have also taught English as a foreign language to a Moroccan lady for the past two years through a charity called Sixty Plus.

Tutoring Approach:

I try to explain things in the way that I most like to learn - that is, in a laid-back environment where you aren't embarrassed to ask questions when you don't understand, working at the right pace for you, and with enough variety and laughs to stay interested! The friends I have helped in the past have commented that I'm good at explaining things from the basics and building on that, and at getting them to stick. I feel well-equipped to teach these subjects at up to GCSE level (or AS level provided you are comfortable with a tutor only a year or so older!) having studied them relatively recently, as I know exactly what they entail, how to tackle the trickier parts, and how best to prepare for them.
