William - Westminster tutor
Information About William:
Personal Description:
I am a widely-travelled 28 year-old who has just returned from 15 months working for a human rights organisation in Mexico. I am outgoing, enthusiastic and passionate about my work. I have a 2:1 degree in modern languages - french and spanish and I received 3 As at A-level in languages and History. I love politics and world affairs, especially with regards to development and Latin America. I have spent 4 of the last 10 years living and working in Latin America as a journalist, teacher, tour leader and human rights worker. I love to read about everything and anything and am enthusiastic about life and the world around us.
Teaching Experience:
I taught various subjects to 11-14 years olds in Guadalajara, Mexico during a work placement there. I dealt with large class sizes and also one-to-one tuition. I was encouraged to foster an atmosphere of lively debate with the children which i enjoyed immensely. I have held positions of high responsability in my working past - I led tour groups of 20 people through Latin America and also worked as a Divisional Director for a luxury travel company in London.
Tutoring Approach:
I love to tutor. I believe that through tutoring people grow as individual learners One of the most prohibitive experiences educationally for someone is feeling that their teacher knows it all. A pupil should have confidence in his/her tutor, but also develop confidence in themselves - the line between authority and collaboration is a fine one for a tutor to tread, and one which teachers in a classroom rarely have the opportunity to investigate.
When I am asked by institutional teachers what experience of the classroom and what qualifications I have to authorize the shaping of young minds, I answer: I have been in education all my life. It is the one field in which some university graduates can claim to be truly professional. For me education is life. In my past, the two can be considered synonymous, inseparable; and I am confident that they will continue to be in the future, because we learn every moment of every day. It is my belief that if the tuition of school curricula becomes a similar learning experience to those we don't notice so much, like the delay on a local set of traffic lights, or the weight on a new door hinge, or the lyrics of a new pop song, then 'homework' and school altogether becomes an easier pill to swallow. I endeavour to take the labour out of learning, by removing artificiality, by restoring the connectivity of schoolwork to the life of the student.
