Sandy - Glasgow tutor

Information About Sandy:

Personal Description:

I am a self employed artist and tutor. Since graduating from Grays School of Art in 1997 I have continued to work as a professional painter and have exhibited both nationally and internationally. I also work for the RSPB as a field teacher taking school groups through Kelvingrove Park in Glasgow.
I'm fascinated by the natural world and find that all my painting comes from this deep interest in its widest sense.
I have lived and worked in several areas in Scotland including Aberdeen, Dumfries and Galloway and the greater Glasgow area.

Teaching Experience:

I have worked as a private tutor since 1998 with a wide variety of students of all ages and abilities. I also work as an adult tutor, teaching a broad range of courses from life drawing master classes to complete beginners drawing classes.
I also work as a field teacher with the RSPB, teaching mostly primary school pupils. This work is informed by curriculum based projects and I work closely with the class teacher and sometimes head teachers on delivering appropriate field lessons.

Tutoring Approach:

Over the last nine years I have worked as a tutor teaching classes ranging from beginners drawing to oil painting master classes.
Many of my classes begin as introductory courses where I take students through the essential elements of drawing and painting such as perspective, composition and basic materials. I normally bring quite advanced methods of observation and approach to the beginners courses, helping students to develop their skills immediately. These classes are largely tutor led with each lesson consisting of a talk and demonstration of a certain method/approach which the students are then invited to try with continued tutor guidance.
The classes often then evolve into an intermediate level where students are encouraged to begin working on their own projects which can be wide ranging. I encourage students to attempt things they have always wanted to try, or make suggestions as to what they could do, pushing themselves to experiment with new methods, materials etc. These classes are largely student led with individual tutor guidance helping class members to develop at their own speed with occasional tutor demonstrations bringing the class together where relevant.

Other classes such as life drawing are more consistent in their makeup. At the beginning of any course I introduce the main points of observation and drawing then as the weeks pass more methods, materials and techniques are introduced.

I have worked as a private tutor for many years. This can range from someone wanting to know the basics of watercolour painting to enable them merely to dabble during their holidays to someone wishing to begin and progress on a career in drawing and painting.
Most of my private tuition work has tended to be helping students build up their portfolio for application to art college. This usually supplements another course the student is attending, which allows the private tuition classes to focus on any areas lacking in the students folio alongside looking at core drawing ability etc.
