Personal Description:

With very strong communication skills, I have a real passion for technology, particularly programming. Having worked in a variety of environments since graduating from my original degree (in English) in 1999, I have developed the ability to relate well to a wide range of people. Currently, I work as a freelance Web and Multimedia applications developer, as well as tutoring for a few hours per week. I enjoy the satisfaction that comes with helping people to realise their potential (and often to surprise themselves).

Teaching Experience:

Having completed my Masters in Information Technology at Glasgow University in 2007, I've recently worked as a Demonstrator and Tutor for university students learning Java Programming, Database development and basic Computer Systems topics. The students on this very intense course come from a wide variety of educational backgrounds and across a considerable age-range, many speaking English as a second language. The teaching experience was both challenging and highly rewarding, with many of the students who had initially struggled with the subjects thanking me for my involvement in helping them get to grips with the various exercises.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that an effective teaching relationship relies on communication and patience. My approach is to encourage and facilitate the students' understanding by guiding them towards arriving at a solution themselves, rather than simply telling them what to do and hoping that they remember! I've found that learning in this way enhances a student's understanding, sense of achievement and confidence, which is particularly important with practical or technical subjects. The subject that I have most experience in teaching is initial Java Programming/ Object Oriented Development. I am happy to prepare structured lesson plans for students working to a particular course of study or to take a more casual approach if that suits.
