Laura - Norwich tutor
Information About Laura:
Personal Description:
I graduated from Lancaster University in 2004 with a First Class Honours degree in History (with two modules of Creative Writing). In my first year at Lancaster, I also successfully completed end-of-year exams in English Literature, a subject for which I gained a grade A at A level.
I have recently completed a Masters in Heritage Studies, and work in the museums/heritage sector in Norfolk, particularly focusing on developing and delivering formal and informal learning activities.
Teaching Experience:
I worked as an Assessment Co-ordinator at KUMON MATHS from 1997-1999, a role which involved assisting children aged 4-15 with mathematics work. The skills I learnt, for example, how to encourage individual children to reach their potential, motivation and ways in which individual children learn, are invaluable in my work as a tutor.
I mentored a Year 7 pupil with learning difficulties and helped her improve her reading skills and increase her confidence. I also tutored a GCSE pupil in History and English, particularly concentrating on improving their essay writing and analysis skills, as well as subject knowledge.
I have many years' experience of learning roles, including My previous employment involved setting up and helping to run after school science clubs for pupils aged 7-11, developing and delivering educational activities for young people aged 10-16 at the University of East Anglia, and leading the Education Programme of the 2011 Norwich Dragon Festival.
I am an Assistant leader at the Norwich branch of the Young Archaeologists Club, a role which entails developing activities and helping teach children aged 8-16 about the past.
Tutoring Approach:
I believe it is important to instill confidence in pupils by allowing them to work in ways which suit them e.g. visual media, written word etc
One of the wonderful things about History and English is that, even if a pupil does not find the whole topic inspirational, something will connect with them and inspire them to learn. It is up to me, as the tutor, to find this and work with the pupil to broaden this interest.
Working one-on-one with a pupil will also give them the opportunity to ask the questions they cannot in the classroom and explore areas in more detail.
If a pupil has a particular problem e.g. essay writing, I am happy to work on these as well as the broader subject.
