Richard - Edinburgh tutor

Information About Richard:

Personal Description:

I'm an enthusiastic person with a love for the sciences, a positive end encouraging approach and a desire to inspire recognition in the beauty and importance of science in today's world.

Currently studying an MSc degree in Software Engineering with Artificial Intelligence, am in my 3rd year at Edinburgh University School of Informatics department.

Teaching Experience:

During the 2006 Edinburgh International Science Festival I was part of the MaadSkillz event. Aimed at young people and using urban culture to inspire interest in science. This involved using music and sound, a very entertaining and informative showcase. We have since taken this event to schools and science centers across Scotland.

In the past I have also helped special needs children with confidence issues in support groups, this is a very useful skill as learning requires a rewarding feeling.

Tutoring Approach:

As mentioned I believe in children being taught the "bigger picture". They should have a motivation for studying their subjects aside for entrance requirement grades. If they see how their skills can be put to use whilst approaching and during university then they will naturally gain a hunger for knowledge. This is something I find very healthy and is an approach to learning inspired by my father, himself an academic - Professor of Chemical Engineering.
