Chris - Leeds tutor

Information About Chris:

Personal Description:

I am a self-employed IT consultant with 7 years experience in the industry.

I have a PhD in English from Leeds University where I have taught in both English and Computing. I'm ocassionally lucky enough to combine these skills working on academic projects to produce electronic editions of lesser-known literature.

Where IT training is concerned, I've trained individuals and groups both privately, business-to-business and in academic environments from beginners to advanced levels.

Teaching Experience:

*2 years teaching English Literature

*4 years teaching and training in IT - including university, business-to-business and to individuals in a range of subjects

Tutoring Approach:

ENGLISH

I always try to find new ways of approaching texts that make them more accessible, enjoyable and understandable. I also endevour to bring context to the subject studied allowing students to situate their understanding of a text in its historical, social, literary or political background. I have found that this can help to de-mystify literary works for students of all levels.

I also endevour to help students to improve their writing style and to convey their ideas more accurately and efficiently.

For new English and humanities undergraduates I provide sessions on adapting from an A-Level approach to study to a more research-based degree methodology.

IT/COMPUTING

I always concentrate on teaching best practices in computing rather than simply achieving the desired effect in the quickest way:

Intro to IT - Beginners will learn how to use MS Offices packages competently and efficiently from the off-set rather than picking up the bad habits taught by popular entry-level IT courses.

HTML- learn how to code with industry standards in mind for a better quality of code, accessibility and search engine optimisation.

handling XML with XSLT transformations; a beginner's guide for non-programmers.

Get off the ground with Oracle 10g Database administration without having to pay a fortune for a course or for software (35.00 p/hr).

Learn how to harness the benefits of free, open-source software for all your computing needs- usually only one or two sessions needed.
