Personal Description:
I have a first class honours degree in mathematics as well as university prizes as top maths student in both part I and part II finals. I went into software engineering and built up two multimillion pound companies that I sold in 2001. I have three daughters, two of whom now also have firsts in maths., all have A*s at GCSE and A Level maths. Since 2001 I have tutored on more regular basis as I feel maths should be available to students of all abilities and where possible students should become empowered and self reliant in maths.
Teaching Experience:
I originally tutored other undergrads while still at university. Since then I have tutored at all levels from 11+ entrance to PhD students. I am currently tutoring 11+, CE, GCSE, A level and IB students with some forays into university maths. I have enabled students with limited maths ability to achieve A*s at both GCSE and A level as well ensuring gifted students maintain their A* standards.
Tutoring Approach:
My approach is flexible as it totally depends on the student. Not only their innate ability, their current situation but the time and effort they are able/willing to give.
At the end of the day its all about breaking down school maths into a collection of simple processes and rules. Then ensuring the student can identify which rules to use, how to apply them and has been provided with the basic algebraic and numeracy skills to process the rules..
I prefer the 'by example' approach using external analogies where possible. For example at A level module with 16+ past papers allows the classic 'by example' technique to be a recommended exam weapon.
