Personal Description:
PERSONAL PROFILE
I graduated in June 2010 from Cambridge University, with a double first in English, and I'm now living in London, doing an MA in Comparative Literature, which I'm hoping to follow with a doctorate in the USA, where I'm planning to fund my studies by working as a teaching assistant. My goal is an academic career, with a particular emphasis on the teaching aspect, rather than simply research.
WHAT I TEACH
- ENGLISH - my degree subject. I'm really enthusiastic to help people at any level. I can also look through dissertations/coursework/theses, something I've already had a lot of experience doing.
- MATHS - up to A-Level, including Mechanics.
- HISTORY - up to A-Level.
- FRENCH - up to GCSE
- VERBAL AND NON-VERBAL REASONING - 11+
OTHER INFORMATION
I'm happy to visit tutees at home, for them to visit me, or for us to meet somewhere in between.
FREE INTRODUCTORY SESSION
If you'd like to meet me first, I'm happy to offer a half-hour introductory session to work out what level you're at and what you'd like to get out of tutoring.
Teaching Experience:
I've been tutoring since September 2010, working on average around ten hours of lesson-time per week. Out of around 500 hours of tutoring (as of August 2011), I've spent approximately 200 tutoring English (between KS3 and degree level, as well as adult learning for business purposes), 120 Maths (between KS3 and GCSE) and 80 French (KS3 to GCSE); the other 100 have been divided between Verbal Reasoning (11+), Non-Verbal Reasoning (11+), History (A-Level) and Science (KS3 to GCSE).
I've also had to teach myself various subjects while at school and university (two years of French and Latin over a summer holiday, a university module in medieval literature), and I spent a year as part of a group of students teaching ourselves and each other GCSE Law in spare time (and in the end getting an A grade).
REFERENCES
I can request a reference from any of my current tutees if required; I also have academic and character references which I can send to any prospective tutees. Any other questions, please feel free to get in touch!
Tutoring Approach:
From my years as a student, I'm really aware of the huge difference a passionate and knowledgeable tutor can make, not only in terms of achieving specific academic goals, but also, in more general terms, helping students to think in greater depth and to be more enthusiastic, both of which I've found make a huge difference to exam results. Having gone through A-Levels only four years ago, I'm also very aware of the importance of exam technique, and conforming to assessment objectives.
I'm approachable, friendly and enthusiastic, and flexible enough to cater to tutees' specific needs.
