Information About Lisa:

Personal Description:

I am an enthusiastic communicator who loves helping people and encouraging them to achieve their potential. I gain great satisfaction from the idea of enabling my students to gain qualifications that will open doors for them and their future life. I am passionate about the English language and our rich literary heritage and enjoy sharing this with my students. I am friendly and down-to-earth and try to relate to my students as a way of relaxing them about what they need to learn. At the same time, I have high expectations and encourage my students to achieve to the best of their ability. One of the ways I do this is by offering practical strategies to understand literary texts, features of the English language, and how to write for different purposes and audiences as well as in ways that satisfy given exam criteria.

Teaching Experience:

Teacher of English as a Foreign Language at the British Council in Paris, including preparation for the Cambridge First Certificate in English (Upper-Intermediate level), General English and Literature for 12-17 year olds, as well as courses to older students (17-19) to help them prepare for the Baccalaureate in English (the French equivalent of A levels) and to raise their level sufficiently to be able to enter into the better Parisian universities.

Teacher of English at Fyndoune Community College in County Durham, an 11-16 comprehensive, at which I prepared students for GCSE English, English Literature and Media Studies, as well as establishing extra-curricular drama and newspaper clubs to further enable students to develop their literacy skills.

Trainee Teacher at Seaham School of Technology in County Durham, where I undertook my teacher training on the Graduate Teacher Programme, gaining experience in teaching English, Literature, Media and Drama.

I also have a wide range of other experience within the field of education, from the non-formal educational sector to universities, both in the UK and in Romania and Moldova, during and after my university studies.

Tutoring Approach:

I would describe my approach to tutoring as personal. I am interested in helping students from whichever point they happen to be at, to progress to the stage they need to get to. I am very quick to understand the assessment objectives of a given qualification (whether this be GCSE English Literature or the Cambridge First Certificate in English Language) and to help my students understand what it is they need to do to satisfy these criteria. I am also keen to find out what my students interests are so that I can help them to enjoy the subject they need to master.
