Tom - Holborn tutor
Information About Tom:
Personal Description:
I graduated with a 2:1 in Modern Languages from Cambridge University in 2010. During my course in French and German I gained an excellent knowledge not only of these languages, but also of literature and history, and I continue to enjoy reading around my chosen subjects. Besides academia I was very involved with comedy and theatre at university, and I have kept this up too.
As part of my university course I lived in a town in North Germany for a year, working as a teaching assistant in a small secondary school. I took charge of the school theatre group and we put on a successful show in English. My role in the English department included both teaching whole classes and helping pupils on an individual basis in the classroom; I also assisted in French and History lessons, working with small groups or teaching one-on-one.
After graduating I returned to Germany and gained substantial experience tutoring adults and students in-house in organisations in Hamburg. I have returned to the UK to start a part-time Master's course in German History at UCL, and am also available for tutoring!
Teaching Experience:
Since January 2009: Freelance tutoring in EFL
October 2011 - July 2012: Freelance teacher of English and Business English in businesses and colleges in Hamburg
January-July 2011: English Trainer, Financial Times Deutschland, Hamburg, Germany
September 2008 - May 2009: English Assistant Teacher, Haupt- und Realschule Cappeln, North Germany (ages 10-16)
Tutoring Approach:
I gained my first teaching experience in a small secondary school in North Germany in 2008; more recently I have been teaching English to university students and professionals in Hamburg. As a teacher I believe in being friendly and having a laugh. I think the best way for students to gain confidence in a foreign language is to learn to speak freely in an informal atmosphere, so I place a lot of emphasis on conversation. I absolutely love the English language - I write a lot in my free time - and I can be unusually enthusiastic about grammar... I will always have lots of my favourite exercises with me, so we can work on specific points. I will also always tailor lessons to the individual student, concentrating on basic structures, pronunciation or fluency as required. If you are passionate about learning English then I look forward to meeting you and I'm sure we'll have a fair bit of fun!
