Personal Description:

My main interest is Physics, I'm currently studying a PhD in Quantum Information Theory, but enjoy teaching and tuition, particularly at a high level. In the past I've also been interested in Kung Fu, which I taught to children of ages 4-16 for a couple of years after I left Cambridge University

Teaching Experience:

16 hrs tutoring 2nd year Oxford physics student (ongoing).
10 hrs tutoring A-level maths student.
1.5 years full time and 1 year part time kids Kung Fu tuition (3 classes per day, 15-20 children per class, ages from 4-16) as well as adults one-on-one Kung Fu tuition and group teaching.
1 week experience shadowing a science teacher at a a school for children with emotional and behavioral difficulties.
2 weeks teaching English and activities (e.g. badminton, Scottish reels) to students at a summer camp in Taiwan.

Tutoring Approach:

I have found that a big obstacle to a lot of students is that they lack confidence in their ability to achieve their goals in their subject. I think it's important to rebuild their confidence by giving regular positive feedback, and to get them to lead through problems as much as possible to identify where there are gaps in their knowledge and where they are already doing well (i.e. active learning rather than me just telling them what the right answer is).

In Physics I find it helps to teach using analogies with what we see in everyday life, so that the student can build up a memorable picture of what is going on. I also encourage maths and physics students to do as many questions that they can, as like a lot of other skills this is the best way to get good at it.
