Eleanor - Tooting tutor
Information About Eleanor:
Personal Description:
I am a 22 year old graduate from Cambridge University, who is currently studying for a Masters degree at King's College London. I am approachable and extremely passionate about education - I plan to train as a teacher after completing my degree - and feel this enthusiasm will transfer into tutoring: I will endeavour to make subjects accessible and interesting to my students. My principal subject is English Literature, although I am happy to tutor pupils in Music, Maths, Psychology and Government and Politics.
Teaching Experience:
I have a wide range of experience of working with young people of all ages: I volunteered as a young leader at Cubs, taught my local Sunday School for a number of years, and spent my most recent summer working with the Rural Youth Service.
With specific regard to teaching, I have taken part in the Student Associates Scheme; I had a three week placement in a local Secondary school, and, as part of this, taught segments of lessons and worked with pupils individually. I have also spent time as a classroom assistant in a local primary school, and so I am acquainted with the different levels of learning and the different challenges pupils face throughout their school career. One experience I particularly enjoyed was mentoring a younger pupil in preparation for her SATS: I mentored this pupil in Science and Maths, and it was extremely rewarding to see both her confidence and knowledge grow.
Recently, I tutored two A-level Psychology students in the approach to their January modular exams. From this, I was able to explore different teaching techniques, and gained a strong understanding on how to plan, structure and carry out a tutoring session. Furthermore, I found it to be a thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding experience, especially seeing the tremendous progress the two students made during the time.
Tutoring Approach:
I feel it is very important to be enthusiastic, and so, to reflect this, I would use a range to mediums to engage the tutee, with the intention of seeing what method works best for them. I would prepare individualised lesson plans, providing the sessions with some structure, and would set small homework tasks to check understanding. I would hope to be an approachable tutor who would build up a student's confidence, particularly when either questioning and challenging an argument, or when asking for extra explanation.
