Paul - Sheffield tutor
Information About Paul:
Personal Description:
Over the past year I have spent time teaching young children in South America, working extensively in galleries in Liverpool, and interning at publishers in London. I am currently involved with youth projects connected with the Tate galleries, and write for the Everyman and Playhouse theatres in Liverpool.
Teaching Experience:
In the summer of 2008 I spent two months teaching English as a foreign language to children in Venezuela. Prior to this, as a second and third year undergraduate, I acted as a peer mentor to first year students, meeting with them once a week to go over their studies that week and help them work through any areas they were finding difficult. As part of my Duke of Edinburgh award, I spent 18 months volunteering as a classroom assistant for three hours a week in a nearby school. I attended the school for three hours each week, assisting in Product Design and English classes.
Tutoring Approach:
I believe tutoring should be tailored according to each individual. For every student I take on I discuss with them and/or their parent the particular needs of the student. Based on this, I produce an individual learning strategy to help them achieve their goals.
However, I am flexible in this: I will only set a student targets if I think it will motivate (and not pressurise) them, and I actively encourage their input. If a student has a piece of coursework, an exam, or even something that's occurred in a lesson that's giving them difficulty, I'm happy to help them with this in my tutorial.
I understand a student's time is increasingly pressured and think it vital that my lessons help ease this pressure rather than adding an unnecessary burden.
