Information About Stephen:

Personal Description:

I am currently studying medicine. I completed three years of pre-clinical studies at the University of Cambridge and graduated with a BA in Biological and Biomedical Sciences in June 2009, before moving to UCL to complete my clinical studies. I take part in a wide variety of extracurricular activity and I particularly enjoy tutoring. It is very rewarding and I feel that I have gained a wide range of skills from my previous tutoring experience.

Teaching Experience:

While at school, I taught science and maths to GCSE pupils as part of a 'Peer Tutoring' scheme. In 2008, I spent 5 weeks in a Tanzanian primary school teaching basic English vocabulary to 4/5-year-olds and English grammar to 14/15-year-olds. I am now participating in the UCL Tutoring Scheme which involves going into a local secondary school each week to tutor A-level pupils studying biology. I have also worked as a student advisor at Medsim conferences, giving semiars on anatomy and ultrasound to groups of 18-20 prospective medical students.

I have been tutoring GCSE and A-level science privately for two years and am pleased to say that my students have been very successful in their exams. One of my students achieved full marks in all his GCSE science subjects. I also prepare students for medical school applications and interviews.

Tutoring Approach:

I am flexible in my tutoring style but feel that discussion-led teaching is ideal because it ensures input from both the tutor and the tutee. If a problem is encountered, I like to work through it in a logical fashion with the student. By taking this approach, the student is often able to solve the problem using their own ideas and intuition. This improves understanding and increases confidence when the student approaches similar questions in the future. I have an organised and thorough approach, ensuring all the relevant material is covered in appropriate detail.
