Jessica - Sheffield tutor
Information About Jessica:
Personal Description:
I moved to Sheffield from Bristol in 2002 to begin my undergraduate degree at the University of Sheffield. I am currently nearly halfway through a PhD in contemporary literature.
I live in Nether Edge and would need to discuss travel arrangements for students living outside the S7, S10 and S11 areas.
Teaching Experience:
My main area of teaching experience has been at the University, where I taught first-year undergraduates a wide range of texts from Renaissance drama to contemporary poetry in the autumn term 08/09. I have also particpated in a teaching practice course run by faculty members in the Department of English Literature, as well as a conference at the University of York on teaching literature and a peer mentoring scheme in conjunction with other postgraduates in the Department.
Tutoring Approach:
I have a flexible, student-centred approach to one-on-one tutoring. I only offer tutoring in the subject that I am qualified in to higher degree level, and I can also provide information on studying English at University, including UCAS personal statement and interview advice.
Communication between the tutor and the student is essential for a succesful relationship. Before an initial meeting, I would like to know which texts the student is currently working on and their expectations from the tutoring relationship. Private tuition does not guarantee exam grades and my primary aim in offering tuition is to help in fostering an understanding and appreciation of literature that should lead to increased enthusiasm for the subject!
