Victoria - Edinburgh tutor

Information About Victoria:

Personal Description:

I graduated with languages from the University of St Andrews before specialising in translation as a profession. I now work as a translator and I am looking to find some tutoring work to compliment my translation and proofreading work. Over the past five years I have lived in Spain (studying for 9 months) and in France (working in the tourism sector for 5 months).

Teaching Experience:

I volunteered as a languages classroom assistant for Year 7/8 pupils whilst I was at college, and over the years I have also helped year 11 GCSE students with oral practice before their exams. In 2008 I completed a 60hour TEFL course, allowing me to teach English to foreign students, which I spent my summer doing in Oxford. In 2009 I was Deputy Manager of the Winchester residential summer school, and last summer I was the Centre manager for EF Language Travel, managing the academic and recreational experience of 11-18yr old European students.

Tutoring Approach:

My role is to re-explain and reconfirm what the student has already been taught at school in order to ensure that the lesson has been understood, before moving on to activities to put the theory into practice. Grammar explanations can be given as and when necessary, but confident communication skills are overall more important than the theory for spoken work. It's important to mix topics that the student already knows with those they are less confident in so as to ensure a positive attitude towards learning.
