Michael - Derby tutor
Information About Michael:
Personal Description:
I'm a graduate medical student in my second year studying at the University of Nottingham, and a former graduate of Durham University with a Masters in Physics & Astronomy. I'm currently living in Derby and looking for opportunities to tutor in Physics, Maths and English.
I see myself as an easy going, sociable person who loves to communicate with others and help them to understand what are sometimes complex scientific concepts. I enjoy running and hillwalking, with the odd bit of socialising as well.
Teaching Experience:
At A Level I achieved three A's in Biology, Physics and Maths, and at AS I gained two A's in English and Ethics.
Whilst studying in Durham I tutored an A level student in Newton Aycliffe, helping him to study for his A2 Physics exams with the OCR exam board, setting regular weekly problems for him and working through past exam questions.
Whilst living in Sheffield I tutored an AS Level Maths student and an AS Level Physics student, helping both achieve the grades they were looking for to progress on to A2. In 2012 I also gained another A at AS level in Chemistry, studying at Sheffield College.
I have two younger brothers aged 17 and 23 who I've helped in studying at Key Stage 3, GCSE and A Level. I've always enjoyed helping them with work whenever they're finding it difficult, and I like to think that I'm a patient teacher who's able to explain subjects from several different perspectives.
Tutoring Approach:
I think the best approach to tutoring is structured lessons of teaching and examples, with plenty of opportunity for discussion in and around the subject.
I also think it's important to get regular feedback on how the lessons are going, how tutees are finding the work and if there's any part of it they'd like to concentrate on, either because it's something they find difficult or just because it's what they enjoy most.
I'm happy to be flexible with lesson structure and can work to the particular exam board syllabus being studied.
Finally I think tutors should ensure that the work done in tutoring sessions ties in closely with the tutee's school work, with the opportunity to extend beyond it as well.
