Personal Description:

I have some three years experience of teaching, working in Ireland, Canada, and Scotland. I have taught English, History and Geography at a secondary school level. I have taught exam classes, studying for Standard Grade, Highers and Advanced Highers in Scotland and am more than capable in helping any student develop their abilities.

I love to read and have a detailed knowledge of English literature, studying poetry, prose and drama. I have studied a range of literary periods, from Chaucer, to Shakespeare, Moore and Swift up to modernist writers such as Beckett and Brecht and postmodern authors such as Angela Carter. With this I have read an abundance of literary theory. I love to use my passion for literature and drama whilst teaching. I love to read history as well, having been an avid consumer of historical writings from an early age. I've a breadth of knowledge in all aspects of history, but must admit my real passion lies in modern history.

I have a real passion for writing. For more than five years now I have been a Contributing Editor of a well read and respected publication. My writing spans a variety of areas from music and film to discussions regarding the environment and living. I have written and compiled a host of short stories and plays. My writing experience is endemic in my teaching. It has not only solidified my grammar, but given me a lifelong respect for the mechanics of language.

I am a keen environmentalist. I work with local schools, further education colleges and communities in the Glasgow area to reduce their carbon footprint, increase their recycling and composting levels as well as promoting a greener and more sustainable way of life. I believe that the key to a greener way of living starts in education.

Tutoring Approach:

I have been tutoring for over five years and have a personal and interactive style, believing the best way towards understanding is through practice. Each tutee is an individual and tutoring sessions need to cater to the tutee's personal needs. I feel that through discussion and time any subject difficulties can be overcome and prepare any tutee for examinations. Tutoring sessions need to be dynamic, they need to be engaging and they need to focus on what the tutee wants. Once these necessities are in place learning is a much more pleasurable experience.

I have held tutorials in person and online, believing that the internet is one of the best conduits from which to expand a learning experience.

I've had great success with my approach to tutoring, helping tutees of all ages and disciplines to gain a greater mastery of their subject.
