Laura - Barnsley tutor
Information About Laura:
Personal Description:
An interest in scientific research and contemporary problems in Biology lead to me to pursue an honours degree in Biology, with an emphasis on the molecular cell aspect and often held a heavy Chemistry or Physics component. I studied at the University of York and by my third year I had a profound interest in both the molecular component of Cancer and Neuro-degeneration, my dissertation used Drosophila as a way of determining whether the peripheral nervous system was essential for wound healing.
A keen interest in research was only greater enthused with an opportunity to spend four months at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Plant Physiology in Germany, this provided me with an excellent opportunity to understand and relate my scientific knowledge with research that was being undertaken. Working alongside some of the most respected experts in the field was an opportunity I still value as I gained experience in the structure of Scientific research.
Teaching Experience:
After my degree in biology at the University of York, I undertook a Secondary PGCE in Science at Durham University. I have recently just completed an MA in Education at Durham University and wish to pursue a PhD within the Education discipline.
I work in a local secondary school and teach all three sciences across KS3 and KS4, specialising in Biology to KS5. I have recently been promoted to the Deputy of my Department and wish to be Head of Department within the coming years. My students always meet their target grades and many exceed them by one or two whole grades.
I have previous teaching experience within two deprived districts of the North East, which has resulted in inspiring and interactive pedagogical techniques.
Tutoring Approach:
Students will be asked to bring with them their syllabus and a run through of work they have completed in school. I will assess students to pull out any weaknesses they may not be aware of. Sessions will centre around subject content and exam technique (as this is where many marks can be so easily lost).
Students may be expected to complete work outside the sessions.
