Information About Roshina:

Personal Description:

I'm 24 years old and graduated from Imperial College London in 2007, where I studied for a Masters in Physics and obtained First Class Honours. I then went on to work as an Actuary at Deloitte for a year, passing all 5 of my exams first time. I am now in my second year at Cambridge University studying for a PhD in Astrophysics (Theoretical Cosmology).

Teaching Experience:

Since joining the University of Cambridge I have worked as a demonstrator in undergraduate first year labs. My role has been to guide students through their experiments, helping both with the practical and the theoretical side of their work and teaching them how to keep a good lab look. I have also taught first year Maths at the University to multiple pairs of students, and I am now a supervisor in for this. The work is advanced but, because I myself am pursuing a heavily mathematical PhD, I am still very much in touch with the work and comfortable with it. In both roles I have regularly set and marked homework.

At the other end of the spectrum I have also tutored year 6 to year 9 pupils, mainly in Science and Mathematics but also extending over other subjects. They have all shown a marked improvement in their work, topping the class in Maths and obtaining places at schools for which they had to take entrance exams.

Tutoring Approach:

Rather than teaching general concepts, I aim to focus my tutoring sessions around what my students have highlighted as tougher areas for them. I aim to make each session into more like a discussion so that a softer tutor-tutee relationship forms and the tutees feel comfortable asking any questions. I feel it is important to talk about the work interactively, as it helps tutees to understand what is happening and straighten things out in their minds. They must learn also how to explain concepts or solve problems on paper, so I will always try to get my tutees to work on actual questions during the sessions, with my help. I will offer guidance on which questions I think they should work on between sessions so that they can practise, and encourage them to work on actual exam questions as early as possible. As a longer-term aim, I hope to instill confidence into my tutees so that they don't doubt their abilities, and improve their exam technique. In the end I want to be able to bring tutees' actual exam grades up from their predicted scores.
