Clare - Weybridge tutor

Information About Clare:

Personal Description:

I am a young and enthusiastic Classicist who has worked as a lecturer at the Universities of Bristol and Reading; I have a PhD specializing in Latin Literature. I am interested in a broad range of aspects of the Ancient World, and particularly in sparking the interest of other people in my subject. I am passionate about continuing to promote Latin and Classics at school level and encouraging its promotion as a fulfilling subject for undergraduate study. From September I shall be working in St Albans, and available to tutor there in the evenings.

Teaching Experience:

I have several years' experience teaching in University, including all levels of Latin, and have done school teaching placements and long term supply teaching. I specialize in Latin and literature subjects, but also teach Roman history, culture and religion. I also teach beginners' level Greek.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to Latin teaching focuses on a crucial understanding of grammar from an early stage. However, I do not separate this from texts and try to start pupils reading passages from an early stage, moving on as soon as possible to ancient texts. For more advanced pupils I believe it is just as important to interpret the text as a whole rather than merely on the basis of word by word translation, not least within some understanding of its ancient context. I am, however, very happy to tailor all teaching to the specific requirements or weaknesses of a pupil.
