Matthew - Guildford tutor

Information About Matthew:

Personal Description:

I'm 20, about halfway through a mathematics degree at the University of Surrey. I achieved grade A in maths at both GCSE and A level. I live with 4 students (subsequently cannot tutor at my house). I've got a lot of patience and have previously been CRB checked for working with minors.

Teaching Experience:

No formal teaching experience, but I have worked as an assistant youth leader, tutored my younger sister for her GCSE maths and helped two of my friends at university through a module they were failing last year (one got a 2.1 and the other a 1st for that module).

Tutoring Approach:

I find that the biggest problem people have with maths is getting stuck in the equations and fine details, without ever really understanding why. I like to explain the concept, using examples from real life to illustrate, then explain the equations in a series of steps, ensuring that each step (and how it fits into the overall problem) is understood. This helps with remembering the material for exams by adding a verbal element to the maths, which most people have less trouble remembering over time.

I always treat people with respect, which I think is very important when tutoring as it boosts confidence, which in turn leads to better results, whereas a lack of respect leads to a loss of motivation and results below the student's potential.
