Sheila - Sydenham tutor
Information About Sheila:
Personal Description:
I am a mature professional, originally from Yorkshire. I hold a current enhanced CRB check and have spent most of my life working with children and young people. Most of my work has involved teaching pupils with special educational needs. At present I work part-time as a teacher in a hospital school with students 5-19yrs. I am highly qualified in teaching. In addition to a Bachelor of Education degree with honours, I hold an MA in the Psychology of Education, and diplomas in the teaching of reading (literacy and literature) and in Counselling. I also have a certificate in TEFL My work with children has not been restricted to teaching - I have worked as a Youth and Community worker, as a Counsellor and as a Child Protection Officer. My hobbies include drama, dance and choral singing.
Teaching Experience:
I trained as a teacher of infants but I have worked as a teacher of all ages and abilities. The majority of my teaching has involved pupils who experience a variety of special educational needs - social, emotional and behaviour difficulties, moderate learning difficulties, Autistic Spectrum Disorder, dyslexia, medical and mental health difficulties. I have also taught in secure accommodation. My teaching is effective - my work as a Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator in a large primary school in South London received a very good Ofsted report because the pupils with special educational needs made good progress - better progress than pupils in the school who did not have special needs! I am also on the Upper Pay Scale for teachers who have proved to government that their teaching interventions make a difference to pupil attainment.
Tutoring Approach:
I have a great deal of experience as a teacher of individuals and small groups in school and many years experience of private tutoring. My success comes from teaching each person, adult or child as a unique individual. I am popular with my students because I endeavour to make learning fun whilst retaining high expectations of effort and success, being patient, firm but fair. My fee reflects my knowledge, skill and experience. I integrate my tutoring with the tutees school syllabus and approach, increasing motivation with encouragement, challenge and the introduction of new knowledge in carefully paced steps. I begin with a thorough assessment of a student's strengths and weaknesses at my base where I have assessment materials for all ages. My fee is payable for this session when clients can examine my CRB check, qualifications and we can discuss mutual availability (times) and location.
