Hons - Hounslow tutor

Information About Hons:

Personal Description:

I work as a professional engineer and have been for the last 20 years. I have a BSc in engineering.

Maths is a vital part of Engineering and is used everyday to solve problem's such as areas, volumns, forces, stresses, it is the language of science and engineering. Most tutors brush up on their topics a few days before tutoring. Because I use maths everyday, I understand it fluently and should provide great tutoring knowledge.

Many kids feel that mathematics is an abstract and useless subject in life. With my experience I can give fine examples where the maths could be applied, and help change their attitude and views toward Maths.

Teaching Experience:

Over the years I haved worked around the UK with various companies large and small. In some of those companies we took on secondary school students at year 10 to 12 for work experience. I was involved in mentoring some of these students, introduce them to engineering design, basic applied mathematics (which is already taught at GCSE level), technical drawing, use of computer software, basic research and management techniques.

Outside of my profession I have tutored a number of students over the past 6 years.

One student improved her grade from E to C at foundation level.

Three other students achieved B's on the higher level GCSE paper.

One didn't like my tutoring technique and cancelled after our first session. However, in my defense, this student's mother approached me with 2 terms before the final exam. When I assessed the student, he did not understand the fundamental basics in algebra. I was of the opinion there were 3 years of course material that he didn't know and would be difficult to learn with 10 weeks left in the school year. As I was asked to tutor 1 hour per week for 5-6 weeks, it would seem the parents had unrealistic expectations.

I realize students have different level of abilities and different approaches is needed to suit each individual.

Tutoring Approach:

1. Find out what topics the student is struggling with and help explain and revise those topics where necessary.

2. Revise specific topics of the student's choice and do practice questions.

3. Practice past exam papers for final year students.

I would be happy to tutor students from year 9 to 11 to help improve their GCSE grades in the mock and/or final exam.

Discuss exam and revision strategies.
