Personal Description:

I'm mathematician who has been working in a scientific environment for the last 20 years. The reason I choose to tutor is that I really like helping people and get a lot from helping students get over their fear of maths; to see something click in someone is pretty rewarding. I've learned a lot of maths throughout my life and it's great to be able to pass some of that on to the next generation.

Outside of the work environment, I'm quite active. I have been a gym goer for about 20 years, but I also like watching sports and absolutely love watching drag racing! However, there's nothing so relaxing as sitting in a coffee shop watching the world go past on a Saturday afternoon.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring for about 9 years now and have taught many students from GCSE right through to first year degree level. I've helped school children and adults alike, with some really good results. I also regularly lecture in specific scientific areas at my place of work.

Tutoring Approach:

I'm understanding and I listen well. When something's difficult to grasp, because I've done a lot of maths, I have many ways of looking at things; presenting things from many angles almost always gets the point across. Having been through the learning process, I'm really aware of how hard it can be to get something, but am also aware that once it clicks it'll always be there.

Depending on the level required, I like to initially get an idea of the student's strengths and weaknessed, and prioritise as a result of this. I usually set homework and often use exam papers to help in lessons. By using exam papers, over time the student gets an idea of the type and structure of questions that often come up; the exam isn't such a surprise when they come to do it.
