Information About Rachel:

Personal Description:

I'm a 32 year old Brighton based Art teacher and Creative Projects manager. I'm passionate about aiding and facilitating creativity and inspiring youngsters, particularly when they're really struggling or oozing potential! I had difficulty at school deciding whether to focus on Art, Music or Drama because I loved them all! But i settled for Visual Arts and kept the others on the back burner as hobbies. I'm a painter primarily, specialising in realism/photorealism, but have explored many avenues of artistic expression. I believe that every child has creative potential and a tutor/mentor's job is to equip them with the formal skills to unlock that potential.

Teaching Experience:

I am formally trained as an Art & Design teacher from Key Stage 3 - 5 (AS and A2-Level) a member of the General Teaching Council and have taught in 3 community Secondary schools across East Sussex. I have also specialised in Photography at KS4 and textiles at KS3. I have five years teaching and workshop experience and am now (during the week) a project co-ordinator for a world class Performing Arts venue in London.

Tutoring Approach:

I take a patient and nurturing approach to teaching, without being too patronising. I'm also known to get a little over excited at witnessing great developments in students' work! I like to use the unexpected to broaden students' experience and I strongly believe in enriching students' learning with focus on a healthy balance of Art History, formal teaching, contextual studies and Contemporary Art genres and styles.

I think Art & Design can be used for: therapy, building confidence and social intelligence, intellectual discourse, exploring the world and simply sharing something inspiring or beautiful.

• Foundation Studies in Art & Design
• A-Level Art: grade A
