I am a student of the University of Manchester studying for a PhD in Molecular Cancer Studies. I graduated from the University of Manchester with an MSc in Biotechnology in 2010 as the best student in the program. At an academic skills pre-sessional course at the University of Birmingham in 2014 I gained even deeper experience supporting individual students with writing within very constrained time-limits. I guided all to success at their final assessments. I had some very positive feedback and comments of appreciation.

I have taught in various set-ups - whole class, pair work, group work, or one-to-one sessions. I am deeply interested in each student's individual learning needs and progress and one of my major strengths is differentiation. I sometimes prepare material at 4 levels of differentiation for a single class or small group. I use supportive strategies to boost students' confidence, at the same time challenging learners to achieve beyond their own expectations. I approach intense 1-to-1 sessions with the appropriate dynamics.

I am prepared to go beyond my 'job description' duties to help students with 'special needs'. I am interested in their individual circumstances and take them into account, where appropriate. I prepare resources to address their personal needs and interests. I review their progress and involve them in self-assessment towards autonomy of learning. I am familiar with the 'Assessment for Learning' policy and competent with implementing it widely.

I have worked successfully with students with dyslexia. At secondary school, one of my 'high-ability' dyslexic students scored an 'A' grade at her English GCSE, while another participated in a poetry competition. I have had success teaching students with autism and Asperger's as well.

I invest all of myself in my teaching. I am a highly trusted professional and have an exceptional rapport with my students. I am often quoted as a preferred tutor, who 'has the best way of explaining things' and 'is very patient, friendly and cheerful'. All students of mine - regardless whether at school, college or university - progressed by at least one level (even at short-term courses). A student with a debilitating illness on the BME, predicted to fail the course, not only passed it under my guidance, but achieved grades higher than his required level. In my 15-year teaching career I have never failed a student. I have achieved outstanding results at OFSTED observations. My latest annual lesson observation at BMETC was graded 'OUTSTANDING' and so was my performance at NAVITAS earlier this year. Another observation at BCU was unofficially deemed as 'the best on the course'. I have been invited to share exceptional ideas at training events and have also participated in numerous training activities at schools, colleges and universities. I often opt to peer-observe colleagues, to learn from their teaching styles.

Some more examples from my practice: a class of illiterate Yemeni housewives at BMETC, 2011, achieved a 100% pass at their ESOL exams, while 'advanced' international students at the BME, 2012 achieved some of the highest grades on the course. I have been successful dealing with pupils with behavioural problems at Harborne Hill School. Many reported an increasingly positive attitude to learning.

Creativity is another of my specific 'gifts'. Students appreciate the varied activities I offer - discovery, peer-teaching, role play, group projects, group presentations, 'speaking corner' competitions, debates, often creating my own materials for them. According to students' needs, I use the T-T-T or P-P-P approach, the first one being my personal preference, as it allows a wider scope for creativity. Communication takes place all through the lesson, in possibly, multi-cultural groups, as I believe these skills would be beneficial for life. I make use of all resources available, with ILT used in every lesson. I rely heavily on using the VLE and widely implement e-learning. In lessons I have used Iphones and Ipads, to help visual and auditory learners. For kinaesthetic learners I have other activities, which have proven popular. It is my observation that despite the varied learning styles, all students benefit from 'doing', so kinaesthetically-based lessons seem to be remembered the longest.

Having learned English as a second language, I can identify with problems of international students and am always ready to listen to them and offer help. The same is valid for home students, as I have knowledge and experience of life in this country. Working with external agencies and liaising with services and voluntary organisations has provided me with the necessary experience.

Tutoring Approach:

First I negotiate the times and modes of tutoring with the parents of my potential pupil and agree on fees.
Then I organise a free initial meeting with the pupil and their parents, where I try to establish raport with the pupil. It is important, especially for children, to 'get a feel' of the new tutor and see if they can feel comfortable with her.
Then I try to access as much information as possible from the parents and the child about their progress at school and their attitude to school. If possible, I wish to see samples of the child's school work, or hear anything teachers have said/written about their progress.
During the first lesson I conduct an informal assessment of the pupil's skills - give them a piece of text to read, or free writing or short composition, or a couple of Maths problems to solve. When I get a clear picture of where my pupil stands with a certain skill, I create a short-term plan for work with them. I normally bring materials with me and do not ask parents to buy additional materials. If the parent wishes me to follow a certain help-book, I am happy to oblige.
I update parents regularly of their child's progress - I try to do it after every lesson. I normally leave homework, designed to consolidate the material covered in the lesson, or develop their skills further. I wish parents to be involved as much as possible with helping or monitoring the completion of the homework.
I try to show my pupils as much respect as possible and affirm them as individuals. I acknowledge their birthdays, Christmas, or other family celebrations.
The parents can terminate the service at any time, with only one week notice.

Personal Description:
I have a broad knowledge of texts, and am well qualified to meet the curricular needs of any pupil. I have marked Standard Grade folio and Higher Critical essay for the SQA for many years, and Higher Folio for the last 4 years, so am well versed in expected pupil standards.
I would also like to say, at this point, that the reason I prefer pupils to come to my home is because I do not drive and I have lots of materials at home.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching English at all levels, from 1st-6th years, for 22 years.
I have also been tutoring for 10/11 years and in last years (2013) exams I saw all my tutees pass Higher despite some of them only coming to me after having failed their Prelim. All were ecstatic with their result and phoned to inform,and thank,me. This years results have been astounding as of my 8 tutees, 7 got A passes and one got a B. All came for the majority of the year and none were certainties for an A. Indeed 3 were struggling but worked extremely hard and got well deserved A's.

As well as new pupils for Higher last session ( 13/14) I also had several returning pupils,or siblings, from last year as my services as a tutor have been retained to now take them through the transition from Standard Grade/Int.2 to Higher. This has been a trend for me as tutees have always been happy with the lessons and my efforts in making them feel comfortable.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a well experienced tutor on a 1 to 1 and group basis. I have tutored at all Secondary levels and will support, and supplement, the teaching materials already provided by the pupils' schools. I will look over, and grade, work done by pupils in school and that set by me. In general, I will identify a pupils weakest areas and we will work hard on improving on that whilst "fine tuning" other areas.
As of the new Academic year 2014/15 National 5 and New Higher students will be catered for and I, myself, will be teaching it to my 4th and 5th year students. This will be a very challenging year for S4 as a lot has to be done in a shorter time as year 4, generally have 1 or 2 less teaching periods than year 5/6 yet they have the same work to cover. In addition they have more exams and work experience to cope with. An early start at this would be advised in order to get into folio as soon as possible.

Personal Description:
I am a private maths tutor, although I teach other subjects too. I am very passionate about the maths, in fact I have studied it at degree level for that reason. I hope to potentially be a maths teacher in future, as I can think of nothing better than sharing the skills that I have learnt throughout my life in education with others and watching my students flourish when they realize the joy of learning. Teaching is a very rewarding and respectable job and if done properly it can mold the lives of many young people.

Teaching Experience:

I have been working for a tution center part time for a couple of years now, which is open during school term time. I teach up to GCSE level there, focusing on maths, science and English. I also work privately helping those of all ages and abilities, including adult learners as well as children of a very young age.

Although I claim to help up to an A-Level maths standard, I have the ability and experience to help those at university struggling with foundation maths courses, or statistic related modules within most university courses.

Other subjects I teach privately include the social sciences, such as psychology and sociology. However as mentioned maths is my forte.

I have also taken part in a mentoring programme called paired reading, where I helped children in high school who were not reading at their aspired level, reach new heights, which consequently lead to them doing better in English.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that a student should feel comfortable with their teacher. Although you have to take a firm approach at times particularly when handling groups or younger children. If a child is apprehensive towards their teacher, they will be reluctant to ask for help, and therefore their hesitation will result in them not reaching their potential. I give my students exercises to practise and make sure they understand the grammar part which is important for understanding the language and how to use it. I try to vary exercises between pronunciation, sentences construction, reading and writing for beginners and improvers, including more conversations for improvers and advanced students.

I believe there is no secret, to learn or improve a language, practising is the key.
