I am 43 years old. I have been a teacher for 14 years. I have always wanted to be a teacher. I have worked within the requirements of more than one examing board, therefore I am quite familiar with all exam formats. I have been a tutor also for 10 years with very good results. Students do like me within first session, gaining confidence and self reassurance that they are capable of a lot already. Only some issues need re-addressing, building on their prior knowledge. I have been an EDEXCEL expert marker for six years now. I am recommended as a tutor by Emmanuel College and Cardinal Hume School in Gateshead, as both schools know me well. Among other teaching positions I have been a classroom teacher at Lord Lawson School in Birtley and Whitburn School in Sunderland. I have worked as an intervention teacher (one to one teacher) in a few schools already, due to my extensive experience gained along the pas years.

Tutoring Approach:

Within the first session, I discover the individual needs of my learners, their strengths and weaknesses. Then I devise a plan to address the whole programme of study within the number of weeks available, so no topic is ignored. I work simultaneously on exam requirements, but also on skill development, skills that the student can benefit from, outside the boundaries of a specific exam format. Students find themselves forgetting the time, often engrossed in their work, mentally challenged and stimulated. I set short homework at times, so that students can practise independently on those skills they develop with me, being reassured that they can transfer those skills further. I do provide learning materials which I do personalize for each student. I am very likable and I do make young learners be at ease within minutes of meeting them.

Personal Description:
Hi! My name's Ed. I read Classics at Cambridge before going on to train at the Bristol Old Vic. I'm now working as a professional actor in London.

I tutor in English, and all areas of Latin and Ancient Greek. If it's of interest, I particularly specialized in my finals papers on Homer, Virgil, Horace, and the evolution of tragedy.

Though I read Classics, a large chunk of my finals actually ended up being part of the English course - specifically tracing the origins of tragedy through to the present day. As an actor, too, I'm continually having to familiarize myself with new areas of literature, be it poetry, drama, or prose, with the advantage, I hope, of an extremely practical approach.

Teaching Experience:

Overall, I've found it best to keep a balance between tutoring English and Classics. I like to be teaching a range of things.

When moving to Bristol I was lucky enough to be offered a part-time teaching post with the Classics department at Clifton College. Over the two years I primarily taught A level language work in Greek and Latin, as well as coaching their prospective candidates for Oxford and Cambridge.

I've also done a lot of free-lancing in all sorts of areas for both English and Classics, tutoring Oxbridge applicants as well as students at both school and university level.

The work I've done with my tutees has varied widely. In Latin and Greek, I've assisted some specifically in translating set texts both at school and university level (I'm now very familiar with the OCR Latin syllabus); I've introduced others, who wished to explore beyond their prescribed syllabus, to new areas of literature; and with others I've worked on more wide-ranging ways to deepen literary analysis or approach translation.

I should probably add that my language work with school students has almost exclusively involved tackling the inadequacies of the confounded Cambridge Latin Course! This seems to be taught in virtually every school but seemingly never elects to teach grammar, which I find utterly bizarre. If you're a victim of this clueless course I'm more than happy to help!

In terms of English tuition, I've been fortunate enough to have a similarly broad range of tutees, at GCSE, A level, and university standard, though a high proportion have been Oxbridge candidates.

Tutoring Approach:

I think it's impossible to pin down a sure-fire method of effective tutoring for any given person. People are different, and different methods work with different people.

That said, I am a firm believer that you cannot simply speak at someone. Learning has to be an active process, and I think there has to be involvement from both sides for things to sink in. In this light, I do try to make things enjoyable, and also to limit shortcuts; I'm of the view that it's far better to invest the time in getting firmly to grips with a subject, be it an instance of grammar or literary concept. In the long run that is a shortcut in itself.

I was active in my school, tutoring struggling GCSE french and maths students who were at a loss or alienated from teachers. Often, getting help from someone who has recently gone through the same exam is the most valuable tool to any student. I found older students to be far more useful than teachers, older student experience is what i aim to provide.

Tutoring Approach:

With public exams, its not what you know but how you know it. I will aim to provide hands on exam technique with the use of real past questions and examples, starting from the basic right through to the most difficult and nuanced problems. In this way i aim to add one grade higher grade at the very least to a tutees prediction.

Personal Description:

Tutoring with Team Up (previously the Young Educational Learning Programme - YELP) Nov-Spring 2011 - 5 tutees
Taught GCSE-level History and English Language and Literature.
Provided a straightforward, interesting study technique, particularly for English literature and poem/prose analysis, which seemed to be the most challenging area.
The aim of the programme was to help students from disadvantaged backgrounds, achieving mostly Cs or Ds but also Bs, to reach their full academic potential. I provided plenty of mentoring and focused on fostering a positive attitude towards learning and further education.
Helped students boost their final marks. One student jumped from a B to an A* in English Language and Literature, two from C to an A in History, and one from a D to a C in English.
Received very positive feedback from organisers of the programme, both for the improved results attained, but also for the friendly and fun environment created while teaching.

Tutoring IGCSE - 2008/2009 - 4 tutees
As part of the International Baccalaureate Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) programme, I tutored IGCSE English Language and Literature, History, Drama, Geography and Biology while in my last two years of school.
I mostly covered problem areas, focusing on past paper practice tasks during the hour-long lessons.
The results were positive, with all students achieving Bs and above in the tutored subjects.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that what makes me a good tutor is the understanding that teaching is not just about laying down the facts. It is a process of developing a relationship of trust and engaging the student so that he or she genuinely enjoys learning about the subject. I find that once a student enjoys learning, it is much easier to encourage him or her to absorb the material, performing better in exams. I always try to establish this enthusiasm by varying my techniques, understanding my student's academic needs and keeping the atmosphere friendly yet focused. Every student is capable of boosting his or her marks with the right guidance and with practice. The right guidance involves looking at each student as an individual with specific academic requirements and needs and so I never use a sweeping approach to teaching, rather assessing each student's needs on a case by case basis.

-I am a 19 year old psychology student at Ulster University.
-I currently work as a member of a professional research team within my University and have done since January 2014. Within my University I am a Peer-Assisted-Study-Sessions (PASS) leader. This role involves assisting psychology students throughout the first year of their degree. In my PASS group there are 10 students, all of whom I assist by bettering their understanding of the work they need to complete for their various modules.

I currently mentor at Phoenix ADHD centre, based in Coleraine. Here I work with children and young adults aged 12-17 with ADHD, in particular one child whom I mentor and work closely with. Every Tuesday I spend 2 hours with my mentee, we go bowling, engage in behavioral and attitude improving activities and we have become friends over the past few months.
