Subjects: Combined Science  |  Physics  |  Chemistry  |  Maths

Personal Description:
My name is Sam and I am a 19 year old student studying physics at the University of Southampton. I will be at home in Leatherhead until the end of September and am happy to travel. I thoroughly enjoy learning about maths and science and find tutoring a very rewarding experience. My asking fees are negotiable.

Teaching Experience:

I started tutoring just after finishing my GCSE's. I taught some students GCSE maths and science on a weekly basis over a period of two years. I also have experience in teaching A level maths and I was hired by a couple of students in my class to help prepare them for their A level exams.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe the best way to solve a maths problem is to work through a general method. When teaching maths, I break this method down into small, simple steps and teach each part of it individually. Once I have worked through the method with the pupil and made sure they understand it I will then set some questions either from their text book/past exam papers. As the student progresses through the questions and gains confidence with the method I will cut down on the amount of hints I provide to show the student that they can do the problems by themselves. Having said this I will provide the student with all the encouragement and help they need. With maths repetition is key and so I believe setting questions for the student to do in the next couple of days by themselves is essential. It allows me to see if the student has fully understood what we covered in the previous session and is a brilliant way to improve the students confidence in their own self ability.

With science I take a part of the syllabus at a time and work through it slowly. Science is much easier to learn when the ideas and theories are well understood and not just thrown at you and so I make sure the student fully understands what I am saying before moving on. Science can often be rushed in classrooms with many ideas thrown at you all at once and it is very easy to get left behind. I believe that taking the time to read over your notes after a lesson is a brilliant idea. By doing this you can identify areas that you are finding hard to understand and it will make time with a tutor much more effective.

I believe that sometimes children need that one-to-one support with an adult or a teacher so they can be certain that they understand the topic in question. Clare (Miss)

Personal Description:
I am a young and enthusiastic Classicist working on a PhD in Latin Literature at the University of Reading. I am interested in a broad range of aspects of the Ancient World, and particularly in sparking the interest of other people in my subject. I am passionate about continuing to promote Latin and Classics at school level and encouraging its promotion as a fulfilling subject for undergraduate study. I am therefore using all opportunities offered my PhD to encourage other Classics learners, including taking up all teaching opportunities in the department, participating in teaching and learning workshops to improve modes of outreach, taking my research into schools and taking undergraduates to Rome.

Teaching Experience:

I am relatively new to tutoring but am teaching Latin to A-level standard on a one to one basis. I am also due to start teaching Latin epic and language at the University of Reading. As part of the Researchers in Residence scheme I also take my research into a secondary school to a variety of year groups and am involved in their learning.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to Latin teaching focuses on a crucial understanding of grammar from an early stage. However, I do not separate this from texts and try to start pupils reading passages from an early stage, moving on as soon as possible to ancient texts. For more advanced pupils I believe it is just as important to interpret the text as a whole rather than merely on the basis of word by word translation, not least within some understanding of its ancient context. I am, however, very happy to tailor all teaching to the specific requirements or weaknesses of a pupil.

Personal Description:
Hello.
I am 26 studying sustainability, peace, and systems sciences. I was born and raised in Japan and left at 18 to study in the United States at the University Of California Santa Cruz. I graduated with honors in 2005, and was hired for 2 years as a Teaching Assistant for the university. The role of a Teaching Assistant is to facilitate smaller classes to explore the topics in more detail, resolve questions, and support the students. I enjoyed that experience very much, and had many opportunities to experiment with creative and fun ways to learn the target materials.

During my position as a Teaching Assistant, I also developed a curriculum and engaged with a student-centered pedagogy for a course organized by students on Sustainable Living. That lead to a class I co-initiated on our university's relationship with nuclear weapons. The central elements of both classes revolved around students teaching each other and utilizing academic research for tangible actions. With the right scaffolding and goals, students as a community of learners can create an extremely enjoyable and meaningful learning environment that exceeds the university standards. I believe we all are continuously learning in diverse ways, and most of the time all we need is a little direction and a positive environment to maximize our educational experience.

At the moment, I spend most of my time cooking Japanese food, translation, reading and writing in Japanese, and doing research. In addition to academic tutoring, I am open to teaching Japanese cultural classes such as traditional Japanese food (beyond sushi), tea ceremony, and other topics.

Best way to contact me is via email.
The phone number requires and extension number when the dial tone changes. 213 is the extension number.

Teaching Experience:

UNIVERSITY
My first experience teaching a class at a university was during my junior year as a psychology student. My interest in education has steadily grown since, leading to 2 years of working as a Teacher's Assistant at the University of California Santa Cruz in the psychology and education departments. Courses include, Introduction to Psychology (psyc), Personality Assessments (psyc), Human Sexuality (psyc), Introduction to Educational Theories, Introduction to Education: Socio-cultural theory, and intermediate Japanese.
I have also designed and implemented courses on sustainable living, nuclear weapons, and student facilitated action-research education.

SUMMER SCHOOL
For 3 summers I worked as a English guide for Japanese children in an all-English speaking summer language immersion program. We aimed to develop the seeds of English in these Japanese elementary schoolers by using simple repetitive vocabulary, gestures, and minimal translation.

FREESKOOL
I have also taught a community organized Japanese cooking class and tofu making class.

Tutoring Approach:

Student directed with guidance where needed. I am comfortable with both a casual approach or a structured approach depending on the student's needs. We will assess what is working and what is not, and how the tutoring can be most effective. I hope to help develop appropriate study skills, and explore with the student what is most needed in the situation. In any learning endeavor we are always learning about learning, and I hope to bring this metacognitive element into the tutoring session.

Personal Description:
I am an experienced tutor in English, Maths, Science, History, French and Spanish. I am a 21-year old student, currently studying English Language and Literature at Oxford University (so I am only available to tutor during the University vacations). My passion for teaching and working with children makes me an easy and fun person to learn with, and my lessons focus on enjoyment and getting the best out of people.

I can also be very results-driven when necessary, and have a good working knowledge of the 11+, Common Entrance 13+, GCSE, iGCSE and A level courses. As well as teaching the requisite material, I can offer revision help, catch-up sessions and even organisational classes, which are very effective in improving public exam results.

I pride myself on the ability to teach any pupil a technique for writing well-structured essays under exam conditions and have helped many students to boost their grades with my effective planning techniques.

I also have experience of the public school Scholarship system, and can provide some useful insights and feedback even to the most able candidates, which will increase their chances of success.

Personally, I enjoy reading, playing football and hockey, choral singing and playing the 'cello.

Teaching Experience:

I spent 11 months of my gap year teaching in an International School in Thailand, the British International School, Phuket. Here I taught primary English, Maths, Topic (History and Geography) and secondary music as well as English as a Foreign Language. I worked and lived in a boarding house, where I assisted with homework during the evenings, and regularly reading with the children.

I have experience of private tuition of English as a Foreign Language, Maths and English with English, Russian, Swedish and Thai children aged between 7 and 12.

I have experience of private tuition of older children of GCSE Science and AS and A level English, History and Spanish.

I personally achieved 4 A grades at A Level in English, French, History and Spanish, and 7 A*s at GCSE.

Tutoring Approach:

I work with pupils to get the best possible results that they can achieve, whilst promoting enjoyment of learning. My style is humorous but firm, and students generally enjoy their time working with me. Whether with homework help, learning a specific topic or working towards a high-pressure public exam, I work with tutees to help them quickly master the basics and begin putting them into practice.

Personal Description:
I grew up in Cambridge and studied Theatre at University. I currently live in London. My father is from Los Angeles so I have grown up in both the US and England. I have been educated in both countries, which has helped me to understand how different methods and educational techniques can be more effective than others. As well as acting, I work for a Charity Events company in London; helping to organise the staff and run the hospitality.

Teaching Experience:

I traveled to Peru after University and worked in an orphanage helping to teach English to the children. I worked for 6 months on a touring production for school children. The play was focused on the environment and climate change; making the children take responsibility of their actions within their local community. I have tutored friend's children, and family friends through their SAT and GCSE exams in the past.

Tutoring Approach:

Having been able to travel as a child, and see how other establishments work, I believe that children do not often get the freedom in the key subjects to take them at a slower pace. This can cause the student to fall behind in work, losing confidence and dropping below their own standard. I try to help the student focus on areas they are comfortable with at first and then approach harder areas only after they have built up their confidence again. This method is adjusted and molded to each child after the first session. This way, they can get the most out of the work using the best approach that suits their ability.

I studied Maths and Further Maths at A level and achieved a score of over 90% in each, dropping only 9 marks out of 600 in the entire Maths A level.

Within the Maths and Further Maths A levels, the modules I have most experience with are: C1, C2, C3, C4, S1, M1, M2, M3, DE, FP1, FP2 and FP3, although with prior notice I can also tutor in other modules.

Within the subjects of Latin and Ancient Greek I can offer tutoring related to: Latin to English and Greek to English translation (such as the 'unseen' passages which feature in the GCSEs and A levels); English to Latin and English to Greek translation (which is an optional part of the A level but is very beneficial for increasing confidence and ability with translation); set text study; comprehension questions such as those found in the A2 for Latin and Ancient Greek.

Teaching Experience:

I have spent time tutoring other A level school students in Maths on a one-to-one basis, and due to taking the Maths and Further Maths A levels both in one year, there was not sufficient time to cover all of the relevant material in classes, so much of it I taught myself. Although I did not study English to Latin or English to Greek translation at A level, I have since taught myself sufficiently to sit university exams and to tutor in the subjects. I implement the teaching methods which I used to teach myself in tutoring other students.

Tutoring Approach:

Having taken the relevant A level and GCSE examinations in the last few years, I have a very close knowledge of the syllabus for each subject, which is essential for giving helpful tutoring to students. I think that being only a few years older than my students helps form a good tutor-student relationship, which significantly helps learning - this process of forming a report can be more difficult with older tutors.

Many tutors may not be fully aware of the recent changes in the structuring of most A levels, with a total of 4 modules rather than 6, and the rearrangement of the teaching material into fewer modules. It cannot be ignored how great a role exam technique plays in GCSEs and A levels at the moment, for better or worse, and this is included as a part of my tutoring - I can tutor purely with the aim of improvement at the subject, or with the additional aim of gaining high exam grades through discussion of exam technique, whichever is desired.

Personal Description:
I am a 24 year old male, living near Cambridge, and a graduate from King's College London. I am going to be studying a post-graduate degree at Cambridge University soon and am looking to teach privately part-time. I am a fluent French speaker, having grown up in France, and even worked in the summer months during my studies. I am available to teach French privately to kids and adults as well as other subjects such as Maths, History and Economics, which I excelled in at school. I have access to my own transport and can travel up to 25 miles.

Teaching Experience:

I have experience in teaching French, Maths and Music. I am fluent in French (achieving an A* at GCSE level in just one year) and have taught both adults and young children. During my gap year, I taught music at a music school in Dubai. I taught all ages, from 10-15. I also have experience in teaching English as a second language when I did some work experience abroad last year in the Middle East. I was quickly thrown in the deep end (being asked to teach a class of half a dozen people without previous experience!) but thankfully it taught me a great deal and how to direct and teach people of all ages.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a very professional yet cordial approach to tutoring. I understand the factors that make a good teacher such as being articular and clear, good communication skills, demonstrating empathy, ensuring student participation, enthusiasm, demonstrating good knowledge, flexibility, and lastly being approachable and friendly. I can confidently say that I would be able to demonstrate all of these important characteristics during my tutoring. I also treat all people equally and fairly and would not have any problem teaching people from all walks of life.

Personal Description:
I am a Chinese native speaker, and now postgraduate student in translation on the university scholarship. I was doing BA in Chinese language and literature in China before.
Before I came to London, I attended the National Teaching Chinese as a Second Language Certificate Examination ( Advanced Level ), and 1 subject got 58%, thus 2 points away from highest level of Chinese-teaching certificate.
I 'm optimist, fun-loving, easy-going, while serious and patient and good at making jokes in both Chinese and English :) .
I'm also a versatile person. I play guitar, football, basketball, and have a good knowledge of Chinese culture and history. In addition, I write good Chinese calligraphy. And cook nice Chinese veggie dish as well. :P

Teaching Experience:

Some personal tutoring in Mandarin and guitar

Tutoring Approach:

1. Using my versatility to make Chinese-learning easy and fun;
2. to share my experience and methods in language learning, in order to let students learn a new language more quickly. As the Chinese proverb goes:" Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.";
3. to make best use of online resources to make my teaching state-of-art;
4. to combine language learning and cultural tips.

Personal Description:
I am a Newly Qualified Teacher and native speaker of German. I particularly enjoy sharing my culture with learners, but my strengths also include helping learners understand grammar, providing opportunities for speaking and 'creative' writing, designing games and activities etc. I am familiar with the specifications and assessment criteria for GCSE and A2 Level and can help learners achieve their full potential. I would also be happy to work with adult learners and cover topics that they are interested in.

Teaching Experience:

- Employment based teacher training, KS3 to KS5.
- Teaching Assistant of English Linguistics at university in Germany.
- Tutoring German pupils in English.

Tutoring Approach:

Depends on learners' needs, wishes and age. After an initial (self-) assessment of the learner's strengths and targets, I would be able to provide a variety of activities and exercises: listening, speaking, writing, reading (including authentic texts), grammar, culture, films, games, ICT. I prefer to help learners discover rules for themselves so they can practice their thinking skills and feel more confident, rather than explaining rules top-down. When practicing speaking, I do not interrupt learners to correct their errors but try to get a natural conversation going and only work on any errors later on.
