Personal Description:
My name is Matteo, I'm 27 and Italian. I moved to London two years ago to study Sound Engineering,
after completing a Bachelor and then a Master of Science in IT back home.
I specialized in Computer Security and my thesis, which focused on a mathematical model for a network of underwater sensors, has brought me to write an article for a scientific magazine.
At the moment I'm applying my scientific interests to the technical side of audio and sound (i just got a Diploma in Sound Engineering at SAE London), being music something I've always felt related to.

Teaching Experience:

During the last three years of my university career (2006-2008) I've been teaching math and physics to high school and university (bachelor level) students.
While attending my Diploma course at SAE London (2008-2009), I've been tutoring two of my colleagues who had difficulties with the mathematical and physical aspects of Sound (sound wave theory, logarithms etc...) .

Tutoring Approach:

My teaching experience has taught me that students often present a mental block towards the idea of being able to deal with scientific subjects (especially math). Therefore, I've always found useful to begin a tutoring relationship by motivating the student, helping him to understand that there's no built-in obscurity in the world of numbers and physical laws and establishing a mutual trust which eventually brings the lesson in a more relaxed and familiar environment.

As for the teaching method, I usually approach the lecture by briefly explaining the theoretical aspects of the subject in order to make sure that there the student has fully understood what we are talking about and the reason why we are going to spend time on calculations later on: a good understanding of the theory is the only way to stimulate the interest and mental involvement which is at the basis od the scientific process.

Later on, I present exercises in an increasing order of complexity to guide the student through a gradual and efficient path leading to a complete comprehension.

It is my habit to leave some homework for the next lesson in order for me to double-check that the student has absorbed what we've done and that we can begin with something new.

Personal Description:
I am a very hardworking acting student with a strong academic background, looking to work as a tutor in the evenings, at weekends and during the long holidays.

During my degree at King's College London I studied physical and human geography, politics, international development and international relations. My dissertation regarding the economic collapse in Argentina and its impact on the growing co-operative movement has recently been published by Morgan and Claypool in the book 'Needs and Feasibility: A Guide for Engineers in Community Projects - The Case of Waste for Life'. I have also conducted primary research into microfinance systems in Kerala, India.

While working in the House of Commons I gained a great deal of knowledge about the British political system at a local and national scale. I resolved a diverse range of complicated cases brought forward by constituents, including problems with immigration claims, benefits and housing, and answered queries about government policies. Although I decided to leave the political field in order to pursue a career in theatre, I am still very politically active by volunteering for my local Labour party and keeping up with current affairs.

I believe the personal qualities I rely on as an actor are completely applicable to teaching, as my classical acting training has taught me a great deal about approaching a task creatively and finding ways of working with different people. Although it is a predominantly practical training it also includes very thorough academic work on Shakespeare, Restoration theatre, classical poetry, Greek theatre and modern playwrights.

Teaching Experience:

Over the past eight years I have taught pupils aged between 5 and 16, and would be confident working with any age group or ability. I worked in two very challenging schools and have learnt to adapt my methods of teaching to suit different subjects, pupils and teachers.

2004 - 2005
Teaching Assistant at Cheney School, Oxford
Providing one-to-one and classroom support to students aged 11 to 16 in Maths, English, Science, Music, Drama, French, R.E., History and Geography. This included working with SEN students, specifically with autism.
Assessing and recording their progress, adapting teaching methods accordingly, and liaising with staff and parents.

2002 - 2003
After-School Club Supervisor at St Andrew's Primary School, Oxford
Organising educational and entertaining after-school activities for children aged 5 - 9. Each activity was based on a different subject, including Biology, English and Music.

2006 - 2008
Founder and Workshop Leader for 'Children's Theatre Workshop' at Charlotte Sharman Primary School, London
Setting-up a student volunteering project to provide weekly drama lessons and performance experience for children aged 5 to 11.
Liaising with the university, school and parents, handling the budget, conducting risk assessments and managing a team of volunteers.
Developing educational drama activities for each workshop and producing plays for the students to perform in.

Tutoring Approach:

I attended a challenging inner-city state school and as a result became a confident independent learner very quickly - a skill I was extremely grateful for by the time I arrived at university. I did, however, feel in some ways let down by the education system, which I why I have taken such an interest in education since leaving school. I believe that many children cannot recieve the individual help they require due to factors such as specific individual needs, lack of resources in schools and unimaginative teaching. Having said this, I have been lucky enough to work with some excellent teachers who have inspired me to continue to learn about and work in education.

I enjoy building a good rapport with my students and out of all the young people I have worked with, I am yet to find one who I was unable to get on with or find something in common with!

I believe that learning should be fun and interesting in order for students to really engage with a subject and I love the challenge this can present, especially in exam revision. I am not one of those lucky people who have a photographic memory and as a result have tried and tested numerous ways of revising for exams, and would be glad to share my discoveries with students in the same position.

I think it is extremely important to investigate the different teaching methods individuals respond to, and to try different angles of explaining something. I believe this is where the combination of my creative and academic abilities is extremely useful as I am able to think up dynamic and interesting approaches. For example, as a teaching assistant I noticed how many of my students responded better to kinetic learning, which involved some sort of physical activity such as counting out coins rather than writing down sums on paper, or acting out sections of Shakespeare rather than just reading them aloud. I even once got a group of 14 year olds to physicalise a volcanic eruption, with each person representing a different part.

I believe that a key problem that many school students face in their education is a lack of confidence in their abilities. I have found that by giving frequent genuine encouragement, while also pushing them an appropriate amount, students are more likely to become independent learners.

Personal Description:
I enjoy teaching and consider myself both easy going and approachable, whilst being firm and demanding enough to get the best out of any potential student. I recently graduated with a high 2:1 in biochemistry (with a year in industry) from The University York and am currently working towards an MRes in molecular plant biology and biotechnology at Imperial College London. Upon completing the MRes I intend to further my research interests by undertaking a PhD.

Teaching Experience:

At university I would often take part in student led tutorials and workshops, allowing me to hone my teaching and listening skills. This is coupled with considerable prior experience tutoring both friends, family and students of all ages in various subject areas, with high levels of success. I am currently tutoring key stage 3 biology, chemistry and physics.

Tutoring Approach:

I have an informal teaching style and seek to understand the particular educational requirements of each individual tutee. To this end I will endeavor to promote educational development through note taking, written exercises, case studies, question and discussion periods, as well as with independent study. When the time comes for formal examinations the learning focus will shift to past paper practice and improving general examination technique. I have a firm belief in always being approachable for any type of question, great or small and l like to foster an inquisitive relationship with my tutee. Finally, it is worth mentioning that I am willing to do an initial hour long 'taster' tutorial free of charge.

Personal Description:
My main interest is Physics, I'm about to start a PhD in Quantum Information Theory at UCL, but enjoy teaching and tuition, particularly at a high level. In the past I've also been interested in Kung Fu, which I taught for a couple of years after I left Cambridge University.

Teaching Experience:

11 hrs tutoring 2nd year Oxford physics student (ongoing).
10 hrs tutoring A-level maths student.
1.5 years full time and 1 year part time kids Kung Fu tuition (3 classes per day, 15-20 children per class) as well as adults one-on-one Kung Fu tuition.
1 week experience shadowing a science teacher at a a school for children with emotional and behavioral difficulties.
2 weeks teaching English and activities (e.g. badminton, Scottish reels) to students at a Taiwanese summer camp.

Tutoring Approach:

I have found that a big obstacle to a lot of students is that they lack confidence in their ability to achieve their goals in their subject. I think it's important to rebuild their confidence by giving regular positive feedback, and to get them to lead through problems as much as possible to identify where there are gaps in their knowledge and where they are already doing well (i.e. active learning rather than me just telling them what the right answer is).

In Physics I find it helps to teach using analogies with what we see in everyday life, so that the student can build up a memorable picture of what is going on. I also encourage maths and physics students to do as many questions that they can, as like a lot of other skills this is the best way to get good at it.

Personal Description:
I am a Chinese native speaker, and now postgraduate student in translation on the university scholarship. I was doing BA in Chinese language and literature in China before.
Before I came to London, I attended the National Teaching Chinese as a Second Language Certificate Examination ( Advanced Level ), and 1 subject got 58%, thus 2 points away from highest level of Chinese-teaching certificate.
I 'm optimist, fun-loving, easy-going, while serious and patient and good at making jokes in both Chinese and English :) .
I'm also a versatile person. I play guitar, football, basketball, and have a good knowledge of Chinese culture and history. In addition, I write good Chinese calligraphy. And cook nice Chinese veggie dish as well. :P

Teaching Experience:

Some personal tutoring in Mandarin and guitar

Tutoring Approach:

1. Using my versatility to make Chinese-learning easy and fun;
2. to share my experience and methods in language learning, in order to let students learn a new language more quickly. As the Chinese proverb goes:" Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.";
3. to make best use of online resources to make my teaching state-of-art;
4. to combine language learning and cultural tips.

Personal Description:
I am currently studying focusing on my tuition and this is now my main profession. I have recently finished studying Neuroscience at UCL. I have a very enthusiastic approach to learning and believe the combination of determination and attitude are the recipe for success. I am patient and understanding, but am aware that, at times, discipline needs to be enforced (with the younger students). I'm here to improve exam results and develop the general knowledge and attitude of my students to the subjects. I can provide a very efficient 'crash course' in the run up to exams, whilst also maintain a long term relationship with students to ensure they consistently are making the most of their academic opportunities and examinations.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored a variety of ages - from 4 to 18 year-olds. I am a part time teaching assistant for a year 1 class, teaching hand writing and encouraging concentration and curiosity. I have been tutoring for over six years now and have now taken up tutoring on a full-time basis. As I have recently been a student, the syllabus is still fresh in my mind and I have a better understanding of the stresses and confusions of the syllabus. I can tutor in a focused manner for specific exams, such as GCSEs or entrance exams and I can also tutor to improve students' general ability and understanding of their current syllabus, to ensure that school life is made more manageable and any exams can be planned for in advance. I have an extremely good previous record with my students and am yet to have a student who has not achieved the school they want. As in my academic career, I had a multitude of entrance exams to gain a place in my number one institution.

I have consistently had high grades - from receiving 10*s at GCSE, all As at A-Level and a first in my degree in Neuroscience. I also have a multitude of excellent references from my previous and current students. I therefore believe, whilst I am always improving myself and my tutoring skills, I have a wealth of experience behind me to help any students achieve their goals.

Tutoring Approach:

I comprehend the need for excellence under exam conditions and I encourage students to learn exam techniques from a young age. However, I strongly believe that the attitude and enthusiasm for a subject is the key to success. It is important not to focus solely on exams and to develop knowledge for personal development and improvement. I adapt my teaching styles to each student; each lesson is based on the student's current ability and what each students' personal goals are.

Personal Description:
I've done my bachelors and Masters in Electrical Engineeering and presently working in the quantitative research department of an investment bank.

Teaching Experience:

I've taught Mathematics, Physics and Chemisry to GCSE and A-Level students for about 4 years.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in discussion-based tutoring rather than lecture-based turoting. I strongly believe students must be involved in the learning as much as possible and to this end, I take their input, argue why something is possible or otherwise giving logical reasons. I've always encouraged students to express their views.

Personal Description:
I am 43 and an ex BBC Education Senior Producer where I was responsible for developing teaching and learning materials for TV, radio and the web. I have worked with schools, subject specialists, curriculum consultants and government departments responsible for education. My main projects were BBC Bitesize and the BBC Digital Curriculum, BBC JAM.

I have a undergraduate Honours degree from the University of Oxford and an MPhil Research degree from the University of Glasgow

Teaching Experience:

Before joining the BBC I was a Lecturer in English and Media at Stow College and a tutor in the Dept of English Literature at Glasgow University. Prior to that I taught in a number of Sixth-Form Colleges in London, including Davies, Laing & Dick, Campbell Harris, Ashbourne and Collingham.

Tutoring Approach:

Young people have many different reasons for needing extra tutoring. But they generally fall in one of two areas:

- need to catch up
- want to excel

The first step I take is to agree with the student what their goals are. Then we agree how we will collaborate to achieve this based on their learning style. This encourages the student to take responsibility, which means they are setting their own challenges and are more motivated. I will continually assess student's progress and monitor that against their targets, setting them realistic deadlines for all work.

Personal Description:
As a graduate of The Musashino Academy of Music in Japan, I have extensive experience in performing as a concert pianist in Japan and accompanist for Violinist and Vocalist for their concerts.
I accompanied on a Japanese Canzone CD which was released in 2005 and I used to make music for TV commercials. I'm not only limited to classical music, I also have experience and understanding of many types of composition, from ethnic forms right through to modern, contemporary, techno and electro. I am well traveled and have an understanding of many different cultures.
I am an outgoing, fun person and although I think this shows through to pupils, my lessons are strict and I prefer only to take on serious students who are determined to achieve their goals.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching for 13 years in Japan, 1 year in the USA and 15 years in the UK. I can train you to all levels, for all English or Japanese piano grade exams or for entrance to music schools, universities and all levels above.

Tutoring Approach:

Students who want to improve your skills & pass exams, I am confident that you will see improvement from the very first lesson.
I feel that music is not just about learning the notes & playing them in the right order - like people, every piece has it's own character, emotion & depth. I think it is just as important to get the student to recognise & express this, as it is for them to learn the correct technique.
