Personal Description:
I am a qualified teacher and current Head of Sociology in an FE college in Bristol. I am also currently finishing a part-time Masters in Psychology. I have a real passion for teaching the social sciences, a passion that is very much brought to classroom teaching and tutoring sessions on a daily basis.

I am an approachable yet focused and committed individual who truly enjoys sharing in the successes and development of others. I am a patient and caring person, and always seek to understand the learning needs of each individual in order to maximise both enjoyment and achievement.

Personal interests include triathlon and playing bass guitar.

Teaching Experience:

I have seven years of experience in teaching Sociology and Psychology at both A Level and GCSE. My students consistently achieve results above their predicted grades. I also have experience teaching English as a Foreign Language, both in London and abroad, and would welcome the opportunity to expand my experience by working with students with additional educational needs.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is through ensuring a personalisation of the learning experience. Each student's needs and expectations from tutoring will naturally be different, and my job is to help identify, and cater to, those individual needs.

I endeavour to create a safe, supportive, but challenging learning environment, particularly focusing on the development of the learning skills needed to be successful both in life and in an exam environment.

Above all, I try to make tutoring sessions fun and enjoyable, scaffolding concepts and theories around the everyday experiences of young people today, in order to create those connections which guarantee both short- and long-term learning.

Personal Description:
I am a 26 year old graduate of Museum Studies MA/HONS from Bournemouth University. My university education began with York St John University gaining a 2:1 BA/HONS. At York University Masters degree in Medieval history at and later traveling down to Bournemouth completing a course reading Museum Studies.
During my studies at York I worked as a Tour guide with the company York Walk, as a researcher, historic adviser and presenter for Unicorn films and a research volunteer for the Rowntree society. Whilst continuing my studies I worked at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall and the Poole Museum as a volunteer curator.
I have since September 2011 finished my studies, I have resumed my part time job as a Tour guide in York.

I find the topic of history fascinating, over the last few years I have begun to focus on the history of the Vikings in England, Scotland, Norway and Denmark; though my interests are much more diverse and cover the 2000 year history of Britain as well as Europe. However I do enjoy enthusing about the subject, and consider the ability to pass on enthusiasm to be the key to being a successful tutor.

Teaching Experience:

I have shadowed a GCSE and A level class at the Fulford School, Mathematics and Computing College‎
National Maritime Museum Cornwall took four 1/2 hour sessions

Tutoring Approach:

I take a structured approach which blends the formal and informal.
With a knowledge of the required syllabus if n formal education, a more formal and structured approach will be adopted, but in these circumstances will always encourage participation.
If teaching students who are not subject to a narrow syllabus I will always aim to nurture their own innate curiosity for the subject of history.
The goal as I see it is to pass on my innate curiosity for the subject by encouraging participation through research and leading by example.
I am acquainted with different learning styles and I will be willing to adapt my approach to deal with learners of any ability.
Indeed as I take a flexible attitude towards tutoring if given particular instructions I will be more than happy to adopt a new style
In teaching an historical subject I will always endeavor to teach through first hand documentation introducing the student to the primary material before introducing the later revisionist work.

Personal Description:
I am a fully qualified maths teacher, and a highly experienced tutor. And Ex cambridge graduate, after completing a PCSE in maths, I taught in schools in staffordshire and Oxfordshire before moving to exeter an becoming a full time maths tutor, which I have been for the best part of seventeen years, with great success. My specialism is making that extra difference to grades, changings D into B's and C into A's.

Teaching Experience:

I have PGCE (Cert Maths), from Keele university, and have taught in schools in staffordshire and oxford. My main specialism is though teaching in small classes and tailoring what I teach to what a small group actually needs, and one can be done at the one to one level.

Tutoring Approach:

I pride myself on a threefold approach. Firstly maths tutoring is of course all about listening to the pupil and working out both exactly what they needs to learn, and how one should teach it. Secondly based on my my many years of experience I know what tends to slip in class room teaching and how that slip can effect learning elsewhere, allowing me to tackle problems any problems in maths at the root, and so making the entire process much easier. Finally, I place lot of emphasis on how one reads maths questions and tackles actual problems. As a maths teacher one all too frequently encounters pupils whose maths is fine, and it is their reading of question (which often seem that they are written in a language of their own), that is the issue. I am therefore very experience in showing how the maths one knows relates to the question one is actually asked. The importance of this cannot be over emphasised - the difference between an A and a B grade is a difference in ones ability to read the question and find its meaning - and then how one does it under pressure… I am also (in another life) a storyteller, performer and philosopher , and use a lot of storytelling, funny *memorable facts from the history of maths, as very much part on my teaching practice.

Personal Description:
Currently working as a coach in Hong Kong while working on my PhD through the university of Sydney

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching for 10 years now. I have taught English as a foreign language in Japan for a major language school. I worked as a private tutor in Japan and Australia teaching ESL. In Australia, I also worked with an import company improving the business English of their staff. I have taught Exercise Physiology both at University level for ACU in Sydney, and in an adult education environment. I have ample experience in sport coaching, having coached school children and university students in a variety of sports. I have taught on three continents, taught everyone from children as young as 1 to retirees. I have experience in a variety of subjects and people from various backgrounds. I am used to teaching individuals and groups.

Tutoring Approach:

People have different strengths and weaknesses. Both these need to be adequately construed before any teaching method can be finalised. Usually, I would try to ascertain the students strengths, to facilitate learning, and weaknesses, to identify areas of improvement. It is important to interpret these factors according to the framework of curriculum / examiner requirements. I endeavour to make my sessions fun for students. I try to remind myself that their tutoring sessions are often at the end of a long days work. This makes patience very important.

Personal Description:
Hello and welcome to my tutor profile! Here I'll try to answer to the questions you could have before booking a session with me.

- Let's start with my teaching system.
I am familiar with tutoring face-to-face (6 years) and online (+3 years). I have been part of a research which involves language teaching and technology, and I am right now studying a Masters' Degree in Online Education and Virtual Course Design. I use a wide range of visual tools to make lessons more appealing (virtual whiteboard, Google Drive, etc.) and have a personal platform to connect all my students.

- How do I speak?
I have a language certificate for working in the media, so my diction and elocution skills are very good. In case you wondered, I have a clear standard accent from Spain (and an Occidental accent in Catalan).

- How am I going to make you improve your language skills?
Let me be honest: I am a language learner myself, so I know the key is practice, practice... and practice! But I have good news for you: I'm here to help you with it in the most fun possible way, without forgetting about the cultural aspect of the language. Of course we'll see grammar (it is necessary), but always in a very practical context and according to your needs.

- How about session types?
This is absolutely up to you! From exam preparation, grammar, writing and conversation to the most advanced rules of ortotypography (I am a proofreader). This is the good part of teaching one-to-one, that I can tailor my lessons to your needs and learning style. You set your goal, I design a specific lesson plan!

Do you still have any questions? Then please get in touch, I'll be happy to help!

Teaching Experience:

I've been teaching Spanish and Catalan for +3 years in a famous language platform. During this time, I have given more than 1000 online lessons to +180 students, with 100% attendance and positive feedback. References available upon request.

Tutoring Approach:

CONVERSATION
It doesn't matter if you're new to the magic of this beautiful language or if you've been studying it for ages (and secretly admit that you never took it seriously).

It doesn't matter if you don't know any other language or if you already speak 7 of them fluently.

It doesn't matter if you're 10 or 78.

Do you want to learn Spanish now? Then, that is all that matters.

Just let me know your goal and I'll create a path for us to follow. Learn some new expressions? Vocabulary related to a specific field (e.g. business Spanish)? Maybe you'd like to practise that complicated grammar structure you're struggling with? Or do you want to communicate effectively in a job interview or during a trip to Spanish-speaking countries? Doesn't matter how specific they are, let me know your language wishes and I'll make them happen.

____

ACCENT REDUCTION
Do you have a special interest in perfecting your accent in Spanish? Do you want to roll your [r] like Spanish people do? To follow specific training on a certain sound? In my university research (2014) I have proved that it is possible to do so via Skype, and this is actually the field I specialise in. In this course, I will diagnose your speech, prepare individualised exercises tailored to your needs and create a path for you to follow in order to achieve your phonetic goals.

If you're curious about this type of training, I can provide the reference of one of my students, who trained very hard and in around 2 months was able to roll her [r], or another student, who could improve her prosody and expressivity in only two sessions. Don't hesitate to send a message if you're interested or have any questions!

I am a calm individual who understands that everyone is unique with different speed of comprehension. I enjoy teaching Mathematics to all levels, especially the young minds because I believe practicing, solving and understanding mathematics sharpens the brain in understanding and quickly solving other problems in life as they grow. I have over two years of experience; a year in teaching secondary school students in both a government and private school, and over a year experience in teaching a few 1st year undergraduate students. I also believe that mathematics can be understood by everyone, once placed in the right environment (quiet, fun, musical, etc) . My first task would be to find out which suits the student best.

Teaching Experience:

1) Over 1 year tutoring a few 1st year Undergraduate students
2) 1 year full-time teacher in both a private and a government secondary school

Tutoring Approach:

My initial approach would be; identifying the best environment (quiet, fun, etc) suitable for the particular individual, then comprehending the individual's speed or rate of understanding. I will pick up from this point and build up the individual's confidence by explaining the basics of approaching each question while solving as many questions as possible. In this way, the student would be able to tackle or attempt similar questions at his/her level.

Personal Description:
I am a recently retired Clinical Scientists (registered). I am married with a son and I am a youthful 67 year old with an 8 years old son! We are a non smoking family. My involvement with "mathematics", at various levels, dates back to when I left secondary school (Blackpool) in 1964 and worked for the Civil Service for 5 years. I was in an accounts division and passed two additional maths (and eventually English!) O'Levels via evening classes as well as enjoying the 60s and playing bass guitar in local groups. I took a 1 year full time A''Level course (Maths, Further Maths and Physics) and subsequently read for a Mathematics degree (Physics subsid.) at the University of Nottingham (1970-73). During this time, I had 3 vacation studentships with different departments of the Scientific Civil Service. After graduating, I worked for around 15 years as a computer programmer / analyst during which time I passed an HND in Computer Studies (University of the South Bank, London). Although I was 40 years old when I was made redundant from a communications company, I decide to make a significant career change and return to my "roots" and look for scientific work where my mathematical skills would be better used. After 2 years as a Medical Laboratory Scientific Officer in the lung function laboratory at the Royal Brompton, I had the tools and experience to apply for a research post in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine at the Royal Post Graduate Medical School (RPGMS, Hammersmith Hospital).

I retired in 2014 after 25 years as a researcher / Clinical Scientist at the RPGMS and Royal London. A large part of my research involved mathematical analysis of breathing patterns and flow-volume curves. This involved developing techniques and algorithms for alternative methods of assessing "lung function". I published many papers in international medical journals and all included a significant maths / stats content. During this time, I took evening classes obtaining additional A' Levels in Biology, Chemistry and Statistics and then read for an M Sc in General Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Kings College London. In 2005, my portfolio was reviewed by the Health Professions Council and I registered as Clinical Scientist, which is a protected title, The main reason for the additional qualifications was my passion for learning and the thrill of sitting examinations and testing myself. The addition A'Levels and M. Sc. were taken for the challenge and pleasure and were not directly relevant to my career. One important reason for offering private tuition is my love of teaching / learning and I miss my close involvement with the "sciences". I have been accepted as a Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) ambassador and I have an enhanced DBS check certificate.

Teaching Experience:

Although, I do not have formal teaching qualification and I only started offering private tuition at the beginning of 2015, I am a patient person who has tutored a range of tutees from Common Entrance Exam level to adult learner including CGSE students for both Mathematics and Statistics.

However, my "teaching" roles / experiences go back to the mid 60s helping friends struggling with the Civil Service maths entrance exams and later, post graduation, I taught maths, unpaid, to several children of friends as well as adult friends and colleagues who needed to obtain better qualification. My research positions included (i) formal teaching / lecturing roles at all levels e.g. work experience students, medical / nursing students, visiting medics, junior members of the lab staff as well as registrars and consultants; (ii) presenting the research at local, national and international meetings and (iii) giving guest lectures on B. Sc. and M Sc. courses.

In my research / technical support work, I found particular pleasure explaining to children and parents the purpose and science that underpinned the tests and the analysis and interpretation of the results. This was a unique experience for almost all of them. It gave them and me a lot of pleasure and improved the success problems. In my own time, I helped patients, some who missed a lot of school time due to their problems, with both school work in the sciences and others with projects related to the maths and biology of their respiratory problems. Invariably, they ended up knowing more than their teachers!

Tutoring Approach:

As George Orwell never said "All tutees are not the same but some are more different than others".

I have a variety of approaches, depending on factors such as (i) whether the tutee needs teaching or revision; (ii) the number of lessons the tutee can fit in before the exam; (iii) their strengths and weaknesses, as well as their interests; (iv) whether the tutee is struggling to keep up or a flyer needing to ensure an A* (v) the length of the sessions 45-90 mins and whether it is one or two session a week and (vi) the work they are able to do between sessions.

However, there are aspects that are common to all tutees: before starting the lessons, I am happy to meet for a chat (no charge) to spend as long as necessary clarifying important issue such as (i) which board, level and paper they will be sitting; (ii) the text book they use and which parts of the syllabus have been covered and whether any need revising or explaining and (iii) wherever possible, obtaining suggestions and feedback from their teachers including where marks had been lost in recent exams.

Other aspects of my approach include (i) the tutee attempting appropriate questions / papers from other boards to encourage and foster "thinking outside the box" and, thus, to be prepared for questions that do not fit the usual mode; (ii) e-mailing questions of papers in advance of session to allow adequate time for preparation; (iii) feeding back how sessions have gone and suggestions for changes and being available between session via e-mail; (iv) moving up and down the difficulty ladder depending on the progress; (v) working on exam technique and teaching how to not misinterpret questions, sometimes, badly written; (vi) preparing tutees for difficult topics about to be taught at school, to ensure they get the most out of upcoming lessons; (vii) using examples from everyday life to demonstrate the use and usefulness of maths and statistics outside of the classroom and (viii) building up confidence and aiming to engender a passion and love of the subject and learning, in general.

I make extensive use of marking schemes and examiners reports to discuss how the tutee may have obtained the correct answer but lost marks due to not showing their working or lost time providing irrelevant details and this has been very successful and interesting for the tutees.

Some of my feedback:
(i) As a Year 11 student, Peter has been providing me with extra mathematics tuition during the final months before my GCSE examinations, offering distinct, concise teaching within a relaxed but highly enjoyable and yet professional environment. As a mathematician, Peter has aided me in approaching mathematics from a somewhat more lateral perspective, exploring multiple methods that could be employed to solve a challenging question; a form of thinking that is seldom used within a typical school environment. Peter's abundant, infectious passion for both his tuition and mathematics manifests itself within his unswerving support and guidance during our sessions together, delivering a uniquely engaging teaching environment within which to learn, but most importantly, to enjoy learning mathematics!"

(ii) Parent of a Year 11 school girl: Hello Peter, thank you for your follow up, your emails always have an interesting flair about them. We also enjoyed our meeting and Ebony particularly liked your relaxed approach to the subject, for that reason alone I think she would benefit from being able to ask questions without feeling awkward about what she doesn't understand, most importantly I agree with your 'spades a spade' philosophy in how to interpret the syllabus into the real world.

(iii) Teacher's reply to an e-mail from the mother of a Common Entrance school boy: Thank you for your email. I am pleased Edward has a good tutor and is happy doing extra Maths. The best paper to prepare Edward for our end of year test would be a practice SATs test as they follow a similar format to ours.

(iv) A recent GCSE student, EDEXCEL Higher, via his mother: Peter, I obtained and A in my Stats paper and B in my maths paper and I was told by my teacher that it might be worth remarking, as I was only several marks away from the A Grade)

Consulting the 'breakdown' of my overall Mathematics grade, it appears as though I (thanks to your support) did exceptionally well within the non-calculator paper (the equivalent of a very high A/ very low A* in terms of marks), but it was simply a few questions at the end of the calculator paper (that seemed to baffle everyone, regardless of ability) that partially pushed my overall grade down.

Once again, thank you for all of your support and guidance; I certainly would not have been able to achieve my result within the NON-calculator paper, the paper that I claimed was more intimidating, without our sessions within the Library. You have improved not only my proficiency, but also my confidence in Maths enormously and for that I cannot thank you enough.

(v) Father of a schoolgirl (EDEXCEL Higher): "E" did very well overall and passed all 13 ! In Maths she was one point off a B so of course that's a C. I think we will request a remark for the maths paper. Many thanks again for your help in the past, best wishes.

Personal Description:
I am a passionate historian who since finishing my Masters degree in 2014 has continued to study and write about history and politics amongst other subjects.

I have been teaching privately for the past seven years and this has ranged from home schooling to teaching several students at once. I have experience teaching at GCSE/AS/A2 and undergraduate level, and teaching one on one or groups of several students. Although I mostly teach history I teach all of the subjects offered and I am extremely proficient at teaching exam technique and essay structuring.

In my spare time I enjoy keeping up to date with politics and learning about new historical periods and areas. I also enjoy playing rugby and cricket and help to teach both of these sports.

Teaching Experience:

I have seven years teaching experience at various levels from primary to masters level. I also have experience teaching individually and as a group.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is based upon several elements. Firstly, it is important to be flexible as every student is different and learn in different ways therefore it is essential to be flexible and adaptable. Secondly, it is based upon being organised and methodical in planning and preparation and finally upon making lessons interesting and interactive.

Personal Description:
I am a mature professional with broad portfolio career in engineering, information technology, education and commerce. A qualified Mathematics Teacher (PGCE) with over 10 years working in schools with pupils and students aged 10 through 18. My teaching career led me into the use of information technology in schools, and later into a career in IT management and the Civil Service. One of my specialist skills is programming financial trading systems. Married with 4 children and 6 grandchildren. Keen walker, especially when accompanied by our eager Jack Russell.

Teaching Experience:

My main experience has been in secondary education, teaching GCSE and A Level. However I spent a year teaching at primary level, preparing pupils for 11+ and Common Entrance. I have recently done some tutoring for GCSE. During my time in education I published a guide to help explain the basics of GCSE maths.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is traditional, with plenty of practice on the basics to build confidence and then gradually increasing the tempo to cover the more testing parts of the exam syllabus. I understand why some find it hard to understand the more abstract concepts and have a knack of explaining how best to overcome these barriers.

Personal Description:
As a friendly and very patient maths educator who spends most of my working time tutoring at home, I would love to be of help to anyone who perhaps needs a confidence boost, guidance on a particular topic or even intensive revision sessions for an upcoming exam.

I also visit schools throughout the UK to deliver fun maths workshops, therefore I am DBS-registered, and have obtained a PGCE as well as a Masters degree in Education Management. I also help out with the media when asked for my views on topical mathematical news stories in Wales, mostly appearing on the radio.

Teaching Experience:

Having taught maths to all ages and abilities for 30 years (from KS1 children to adult education in the FE sector), I am an experienced and qualified maths specialist available to tutor students up to GCSE standard.

As well as GCSE itself, tuition is offered in many mathematical areas, including confidence-building in arithmetic techniques, college and university entrance tests, numeracy support for adult learners and maths/stats revision for non-mathematicians at university.

Tutoring Approach:

Please feel free to get in touch should you need any help or support, even with things you may think are too basic. This can often make all the difference.

As well as using my own materials, resources from other educators and past papers like many other tutors, I utilise a range of board games, card games & puzzles at times to help with the learning process, which children absolutely love. It takes the pressure off at times and they learn processes without realising it, building confidence at the same time.

Personal Description:
I am an enthusiastic and professional student who has a desire to learn, and to help others learn. :-)
I think that this makes me an excellent candidate not only to help other students, but to help them enjoy learning!
I am currently studying for a MChem at Cardiff University.
I also received all A's for my A-Levels, and 8 A*'s at GCSE.

I can easily form good relationships with other academics and colleagues as shown through my previous job experience. I also possess strong interpersonal skills, which have been developed through my many years of experience in both professional jobs and also some tutoring experience within schools.
Having a job throughout my studies has meant I have acquired a capacity to manage workloads to a good standard, including undertaking the whole of my third year of study at university while employed full time as an intern at the aircraft engineering company Airbus.

Teaching Experience:

I have recently completed voluntary tutoring experience within a 'Number Buddy' Scheme, where I entered schools to teach school children who were struggling with various problems in their curriculum for the whole year. This was incredibly rewarding, as the regular sessions meant that I could see the improvement made.

My grades throughout my education have been high, and so I have commonly helped other students with their work. This is mutually beneficial, as I think that you can learn something new from almost everyone you meet, including students who you are also teaching!

Tutoring Approach:

I like to get to know the tutees, and how they would like the sessions to run. This allows me to research the curriculum so that I can provide the highest level of tutoring possible, but also so the tutees can get as much out of the sessions as possible.

Once we become familiar with each other, a mixture of Q&A based 'flip-learning', where the tutees tell or ask me areas where help is needed and we can work through together, is used alongside test and exercise based learning. The exact nature is definitely dependant on the individual.
