Personal Description:
I am an independent tutor with a strong scientific background and have lived in England since Aug 1965. Most of my school and college education took place in Dudley (West Midlands) and I studied Biochemistry, at Leeds University (1975-8). I am married and have lived in Cheshire since Dec 1978. We have a son and a daughter; both graduated from Universities in Manchester. Following my voluntary redundancy from AstraZeneca, (Jun 2008), I am now a self-employed Tutor / Consultant. In addition, I am able to speak additional languages (Punjabi; studied up to GCE A-level and Hindi) and prepared to travel up to 5 miles. I have been tutoring Yr 7 - 13 students, in Maths and all Science subjects, since Oct 2008. In addition, I have prepared students from Yr 6, for the 11+ exams; frequently used by private schools, as entrance exams. Testimonials / References (from Students and Parents) are available, on request.

Teaching Experience:

During my long service in the Pharma industry (~30 years), I have run many short courses and workshops. During 2005/6, I mentored a pupil (Year 10/11) at St. Peter's High School, Longsight, organised by the University of Manchester. In the past, I have also been responsible for organising and running the weekly classes at the Sikh Temple (Gurdwara), for teaching youngsters the Sikh way of life & Punjabi culture, in helping to improve their knowledge and integration into the Western Society over a period of ten years.

Tutoring Approach:

I can provide tuition to individual students (or small groups) in the form of friendly, relaxed lessons. Teaching sessions are always customised to meet the specific requirement of the students. Generally, I enjoy teaching and considered to have a caring approach. I use a combination of computer and 'white board' based approach, for creating informal interactive / discussion type sessions, with some form of regular tests and re-cap sessions. Closer to the exams, the lessons are much more focused on using past papers covering a wide range of questions, to enable the students increase their confidence in preparation for the examinations.

Personal Description:
Hello, I'm a tutor living in York, ready to help you or your child improve your Maths or Science!

I love teaching and am passionate about helping students not only to improve their skills but also to learn to love Maths and Science!

I'm doing my PhD in Electronic Engineering at the University of York, and I have a Masters degree in Acoustics from the University of Salford, and a Bachelors Degree in Physics from the University of Manchester.

I teach a wide range of ages and abilities, from young children (min. age ~8) and older children/teenagers (up to A-level), as well as adults.
I really enjoy tutoring and have a great deal of experience. Previous pupils have improved greatly in both skills and confidence.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored both boys and girls, aged 7 to 26, for over 500 hours in total, since 2010. I used to be a beaver scout leader, and I have been helping my younger siblings, cousins, and friends with their maths and science problems for years!

Tutoring Approach:

Working through problems / material in textbooks, talking through ideas and explaining concepts.
This varies for each student - different people of different ages have different learning methods!
Once I have established where pupils have gaps in their understanding I will help them to comprehend and consolidate these areas.

Personal Description:
I am an 21 year old third year medical student at Peninsula medical school.

Obviously, my main interest lies with medical science, but I am hugely passionate about biology and chemistry - chemistry in particular - and enjoy sharing this with others through teaching.

Outside of academia, I enjoy dinghy sailing, surfing, fencing, and play the bass guitar.

At A level I gained three A* grades in biology, chemistry, and general studies and an A in maths. I also have an A grade in AS English language.

Unfortunately, due to university, I am unable to offer tuition during term time and am restricted to holidays. For this reason I am probably more suited to those wishing to get a head start before they return to school, who are struggling with the syllabus or who simply wish to learn! I am flexible with prices.

I am a mature individual with a keen sense of humour and love the challenge that comes with tutoring.

Teaching Experience:

Tutored a year 11 boy GCSE maths and combined science for one year (grades yet to be released);
Mentored a year 7/8 in school with reading and writing skills;
Experience in coaching 10-17 year olds in dinghy sailing, both practical and theory.

Tutoring Approach:

I try to instil a passion - or at the very least an interest - in the subject, by teaching both within and outside the syllabus to pass on the (sometimes) more interesting but ignored areas. Aside from this, I have a relaxed manner so that it doesn't feel too much like school to the tutee. If there is an area they wish to know about that I am unsure on, I will endeavour to learn about if before the next session so that they have a certain degree of input on what they learn whilst still covering the syllabus. I will ask the tutee lots of questions, as I have found this method very useful with it requiring you to think on your feet and explain answers coherently.

Qualifications:

Personal Description:
I am a qualified and experience secondary school Mathematics teacher who has taught for several years in top schools in Oxford and Central London. I have acted as Head of Department where I redesigned the curriculum taking the best mathematics teaching concepts from around the world(Singapore, The Netherlands, etc). From this research I understood that it is one mindset knowing Mathematics, it is another mindset to be able to explain mathematical concepts in an understandable way to gain better progression in the subject.

I am available to give one to one Mathematics and Physics tutorials to those wishing to expand their skills and their understanding in these subjects. These tutorials can include all levels: KS3, GCSE, AS and A levels. My tutorials can be in person or delivered through Skype. I'm happy to take any student from to those struggling to pick up the basic concepts to those high flying through the course and wish to take their mathematics a stage further.

Teaching Experience:

After completing my Masters of Computer Science at Oxford University, I continued to study for a further year to complete a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) for 11 to 18 year old in Mathematics. Since then I have been teaching Mathematics at a specialist secondary school for those with special educational needs, most common of which being dyslexia.

In my last set of tutees, the majority of my students obtained two grades higher than they performed six months previously - taking one person doing Physics went from a D at AS level to a final grade of B at A level.

Tutoring Approach:

Many teachers see tutoring as teaching, but with only one student in the classroom. This idea misses the advantages one to one tutoring has. One to one tutoring allows a substantial dept of understanding to be gained which is difficult to achieve in the classroom. This is achieved in tutorials by giving the tutee the space to learn and the time to learn. Space to learn means the tutor asking frequent questions tailored to the individual that are short, clear and non-leading. Time to learn, gives the tutee time to think and calculate answers to such questions.

Personal Description:
I am a biological and medicinal chemistry graduate from the University of Exeter, a top-ten university. My degree focuses upon the design and synthesis of drugs and their interaction within biological systems. As such, I have an in-depth knowledge of biochemistry, organic chemistry and inorganic chemistry. Currently, I am studying for my PhD in biochemistry.

I can explain topics within biology and chemistry simply and am willing to help with anything from understanding topics to coursework. At College, I studied the International Baccalaureate, using both A-level and IB textbooks. Due to this, I can teach both IB and A-level students.

Teaching Experience:

I have experience teaching AQA A-level chemistry and GCSE.

Tutoring Approach:

Very relaxed and easy going. I would give lessons on the syllabus and try to get the student to participate in them by answering questions. We could then revise topics together to make sure everything is learnt and there are no problems in understanding. This would culminate in looking at past papers and going through model answers.

Personal Description:
I like to be busy! I feel it is important to maintain a work-life balance, which, although admittedly was a steep learning curve in my NQT year, I have managed to achieve and perfect in my subsequent four years in teaching. I have five pets - three rats and two tortoises, which sometimes feels like a job in itself, although I adore them and wouldn't give them up in a second. I enjoy keeping fit and healthy and particularly enjoy running, cycling and fitness classes. Occasionally, I take part in events such as marathons, half marathons and cycle rides and raised 1000 for charity a few years ago by running three half-marathons in three subsequent months. I am also part of a local amateur theatre group and usually take part in one or two shows a year. These have included Little Shop of Horrors, Gigi, Sleeping Beauty and A Christmas Carol, amongst others. This has given me an enthusiasm for drama which I have explored through yearly key stage Christmas productions and assemblies at my last school, where I taught for 5 years. Finally, on my weekends off, I enjoy watching movies and reading on an occasional "duvet day."

Teaching Experience:

I qualified as a primary school teacher in early 2006 and began supply teaching in Reading, where I had studied for my Education Degree. In May 2006, I began working in a one-form entry primary school in Letchworth, Hertfordshire, where I taught for 5 years and additionally led 5 curriculum areas in the school. During my time in this school, I planned and taught all National Curriculum subjects to children with a range of abilities and needs, including children who were "gifted and talented", children with autism and Downs syndrome, and children working below national expectations. A classroom with children working at a range of levels and with different interests and learning styles makes for challenging teaching, but allowed me to develop and hone a creative and flexible approach to teaching. I was observed regularly as part of continuing professional development, and in observations by my last two Headteachers, was graded as "excellent".
I am currently working as a Lower School Leader, teaching Reception and leading the Early Years and Key Stage One. It is a busy job with lots of challenge but lots of fun.

Tutoring Approach:

I have been tutoring for two years and have a few children I see regularly. I am keen to take on more, particularly in the school holidays. My teaching apporach is very flexible. I understand that everyone learns in different ways and at different rates, so this is reflected in my teaching. I cater to a range of learning styles, and ensure that my lessons are fun, yet suitably challenging. I feel it is important to keep learning fun for children of all ages, to motivate them to want to learn and to empower them to take ownership of their own learning. I feel teaching should be more than just a series of worksheets, and for children to really understand and take on new concepts, they need a range of approaches to enable them to explore their subject matter. For example, lessons may include work on a laptop, written work, games, experiments/investigations, role-play & drama and more.

Personal Description:
I have recently completed undergraduate studies at The University of Warwick having obtained a 2:1 honours degree in Law. Since then I have gained a wealth of experience in the education sector in both the policy and teaching fields.

Teaching Experience:

My current role as Academic Tutor at Pimlico Academy (London) involves tutoring remedial students, many of whom have special educational needs. I work mainly with Yr11 GCSE students focusing on English and Maths but also straying into science, geography and history.

I have also been involved in 'Debate Mate', a social venture that uses top university students to teach debating in the areas where it is most needed. This position involved working in inner-city schools across the UK, in areas of relative deprivation to develop the verbal intelligence of young people. I worked in schools as a mentor and a role model, teaching young people to communicate their thoughts coherently, helping to empower and inspire participants to raise their lifelong aspirations.

During my time at Warwick University, I acted as a student mentor for the 'Pathways to Law' initiative, which was set up to make legal careers more accessible to young people from groups currently underrepresented in the profession. The programme aimed to provide additional help for students who were interested in such careers and who would be the first generation of their family to attend university. The role involved mentoring students and introducing them to activities such as moots, debates and student-led seminars, as well as providing academic assistance with regard to the legal issues involved in set tasks. I also provided full-time support as an online 'e-mentor'. Further responsibilities also included giving individuals advice and assistance about the best way to approach applications for higher education.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a big believer in learning and the benefits that can accrue if a students natural curiosity is awakened for a subject. If a student can become familiar and confident with written, spoken and numerical language this can assist them in almost every area of life. Hence, I try to avoid memorisation techniques and use more abstract methods to explain a question or solution.

I am currently undertaking a law conversion course and am willing to offer advice on future careers.

I am approachable and patient with students, and dedicated to achieving goals.

I am available for home visits Monday and Tuesday daytime and evening, and Saturday and Sunday daytime.

I organise my tutor sessions in line with the current syllabus and work as directly as possible with past exam papers. I understand that each student learns differently, and aim to cater to their individual needs.

Personal Description:
I am a well-educated graduate who has previously tutored Flute, Mathematics and Science.

I have also previously supported disabled students with their studies - so please do not hesitate to contact me if this is causing you worry.

Due to the need to get to know a student and their requirements, I do not charge for the first hour of my time - although this is for 'fact-finding' and not a tuition session as such.

If this is your first time hiring a private tutor and you would like more information, or have any other questions please send me a message through this service and I will happily respond by email, usually within 2-3 days.

Teaching Experience:

I have over a decade's experience teaching all subjects at primary level in addition to Mathematics and Sciences to A-Level.

I also have previous experience teaching mathematics and science from early years (5yrs old) to Secondary age and beyond including tutoring for both GCSE and A-Level examinations.

I am also first-aid trained by Wallace Cameron (First Aid at Work) and have a post-graduate leadership qualification.

Tutoring Approach:

I work under the assumption that all children and adults have the ability to succeed, and have high expectations of them. Having said this I am fully aware that a great many people have difficulty with some subjects, especially mathematics. I aim to remove the fear or maths, and instill understanding rather than teaching by rote. If you are unsure as to what your child/children would benefit from learning I am quite happy to assess them against the National Curriculum and dependent on the total number of hours you wish to book, I do not normally charge for this.

Please note that although parents are always quite welcome to stay for any session, this is not always productive as it can make some children nervous - although for flute tuition it is recommended that a parent/guardian stay for the first lesson, as this lesson includes teaching a child how to stand with the instrument, if the parent is aware of the correct position they can help their child at home and greatly speed learning. If a lesson is occurring at my home I do of course have tea/coffee facilities and somewhere you can wait for your children!

I am willing to travel to your home for lessons if this is easier for you, although an extra charge may apply to cover my time and expense although we will of course agree this prior to undertaking the session.

An hour long session to discuss your needs and talk about what you want to get out of private tutoring is offered free of charge to new students.

Personal Description:
I am a very experienced Science teacher with Biology being my primary specialism. I have excellent subject knowledge and have experience of working with specifications offered by AQA, Edexcel, OCR and CIE.

I am enthusiastic, clear thinking and an effective communicator. I have a track record of success in enabling students of all ability levels to achieve their academic potential.

As an experienced examiner, I have a very good understanding of exam techniques and of the misconceptions that sometimes arise in my subject.

I am currently dividing my time between private tuition with the establishment of my own animal education business.

Teaching Experience:

I have 20 years of successful teaching experience in secondary schools in the UK and overseas. For the last 14 years I also have had responsibility for the management of Biology teaching in my schools and for the last 8 years I have been Head of the Science departments in which I have worked. My own teaching has been rated as outstanding by OFSTED.

I am also currently a Biology examiner for two of the exam boards.

Tutoring Approach:

At the start of a tuition contract I will spend time listening to the client to evaluate their strengths and weaknesses. Based on this assessment of needs we would then develop a learning plan which seeks to address areas of relative weakness. As we work through the plan it will be regularly reviewed to reflect progress so far.

In addition to providing direct instruction I can also provide clients with customised resources to work on independently and recommendations for other resources that will further support learning.

As the time for public examinations approaches we would focus more and more on past paper questions and exam technique.

Personal Description:
My name is Ed. I recently graduated from Durham University with 1st class honours in Maths and Physics. I achieved straight A result with six A-levels including Maths, Further Maths, German, Physics, Chemistry and Chinese. I am an experienced tutor and have previously tutored students from a variety of schools and institutions. I am very patient and my primary focus is to help you achieve your goals and objectives.

I currently work in the finance industry. I also work as a private tutor for two top private tutoring groups in London. I am flexible and can travel to you. I am available in the evenings on weekdays and anytime on the weekends.

Please contact me for further enquiries. I can provide you references upon request.

Teaching Experience:

Private Tutor, London, July 2010 - Present
I have tutored over 5,000 hours and have taught a variety of subjects at different levels from primary schools to A-levels. I teach Maths, Physics, Chemistry, German and Chinese. I also provide academic advice as well as interviewing techniques for entering into top schools and universities in the UK.

University Marker, Department of Mathematics, Durham University, October 2009 - May 2010
I mentored second year Maths undergraduates at Durham University. I have learned to work through the arguments and thought processes of others and give constructive feedback.

Sixth Form Tutor, Framwellgate Sixth Form College, Durham, October 2006 - June 2009
I tutored Maths (GCSE, A-Level), Chemistry (GCSE, A-level), German (GCSE, A-Level) and Chinese (GCSE, A-Level) at Durham Framwellgate Sixth Form College for three years. I helped all of my tutees achieve more than what they were initially targeting to achieve. I also learned to prepare teaching materials and adopt various teaching methods.

Teaching Assistant, Student Associate Scheme, Middlesbrough, June to July 2008
Co-operated between the Training and Developing Agency (TDA) and the target schools in the Northeast, I worked alongside experienced teachers to gain classroom teaching experience.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is simple and effective. The general framework is to go through general concepts that are fundamental to student's understanding on the subject through the use of simple examples. I will then reinforce the message and encourage students to work on more specific and challenging problems. Confidence is key and it is vital that my tutees are constantly motivated and encouraged in order to self-develop both at an academic and personal level.

I also strive to make lessons as interactive as I can. I understand the different learning needs of different students. I will always be flexible and will do my best to help you succeed.

Personal Description:
I am a mature and patient 17 year old. I am currently in my first year at Esher College studying 4 A-Levels and I live in SW London with my parents and 3 younger sisters. I intend to take a gap year after finishing my A-Levels and travel before going to university to study psychology or psychobiology. I am interested in becoming a criminal psychologist.

Teaching Experience:

I have no official teaching experience however I do unpaid tutoring with my sisters who are 10 years old. I also have many babysitting jobs so am experienced in looking after/working with younger children.

Tutoring Approach:

It is important to have a good relationship with people who teach you as I have learnt from experience so I believe this will come out in how I tutor. I will guide the child as much as s/he need to reach their potential but I generally think children can always do better than they think and just need someone to help them concentrate and give them a little push in the right direction as schools do not often focus on individuals and their personal needs one-to-one.

Personal Description:
Hello,
I'm 19 years old and have worked since I left school. I, on occassions, baby sit for family and friends.
I'm an outgoing and happy young woman with a passion for teaching and tutoring, my favourite subjects at school were maths, psychology and sociology, child care and law.

Anything else you would like to know I will be more than happy to answer.

Teaching Experience:

My experience is not qualification based but I have in the past been asked to tutor foster children, including those with special needs and challenging behaviour.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring differentiates from person to person.
I find where the person is struggling, what kind of motivation they will respond to and go from there. I try to stay away from text books because I find that if it is possible to explain and show the student it is easier to understand rather than just showing them what to do.

Personal Description:
I'm a 23 year old Dentistry graduate of the University of Manchester. During my 5 years in Manchester I have built a strong understanding and knowledge base for the sciences and would enjoy helping young students gain the same understanding. The sciences are an exciting subject but in my experience many young students feel under pressure to memorise the information instead of fully understanding the topics. I would describe myself as enthusiastic, friendly and likeable.

I am currently pursuing a career in elite sport hence why I do not practice Dentistry on a full time basis.

Teaching Experience:

I have spent the last 5 years working with a range of young adults and children whilst training to be a dentist. Whilst completing treatment was important it was essential to educate my patients and make changes to their daily routines.

During the last 2 years of my degree I was involved in helping younger students complete a variety of different clinical scenarios. I also spent over 5 years teaching and guiding young adults whilst involved with the air cadets.

Tutoring Approach:

Ideally I'd like to meet prior to our first tutoring session (either in person or online) for 10mins so that we can decide on key topics and also for me to put together a learning plan. I aim to work through each topic and break it down into small relatable chunks of information that can be applied to different situations. We'll measure this by utilising past papers and other past questions.

My aim is to help students understand and work out the answers and not to just memorise them!
