View John's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About John: I am an electrical engineering consultant with a degree in electronics and electrical engineering from The University of Edinburgh. I have previously worked as an electronics design engineer for satellite communications systems and as a college tutor in Wallace College, Edinburgh. |
Teaching Experience: I have tutored many students during the past five years, both privately and in classes at Wallace College. I have also worked as an instructor at Acrobounce Scotland, which is a high energy outdoor activity for children and I develop good relationships with the students who I teach. |
Tutoring Approach: Once I have established the strengths and weaknesses of the student, I tailor the content of the tutorials to suit the needs of that student. In maths and physics it is important for the student to have a clear understanding of the basic ideas and principles of the subjects, this is where we will start. Once the basic concepts are understood, the tutorials will have a bias toward exam technique and preparing for the final exam. This has proven to be a very effective method of boosting grades in my own exams and in those of my previous students. I have many years experience sitting examinations myself and have lots of advice in how to prepare for and perform well on the big day. |

View Andrew's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Andrew: I have taught for 33 years to University Entrance Standard, and hold degrees from the Universities of Lancaster and Bristol. At the risk of being pretentious, I would quote Sir Thomas More: "I am a good teacher: I know it, my students know it, and God knows it. Not a bad public". My pass rates for both my offered subjects are above national pass rates. |
Teaching Experience: 33 years in a Grammar School & Sixth Form College. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe in the Socratic method i.e. teasing information from students who didn't realise they knew it. At the same time, I give students a thorough grounding in the subject with detailed handouts, clearly laid out notes with appropriate sub-sections, and up to date specialist articles. Students would also be set a range of recent past-papers for homework, with great attention paid to the importance of examination technique. Examinations are as much technique as knowledge; it is invariably the case that students seeking additional tutoring have not been guided through certain essential steps e.g. how to structure essays, use documents, adduce up to date evidence. |

| About Ali: I have completed a degree in Physics with Space Science and Technology from the University of Leicester and I am a registered tutor with Personal tutors Ltd, Cheadle House, Cheadle, Cheshire, SK8 1AH. My tutor number is 94019, please feel free to contact them for any more references. I am registered to teach Physics, Mathematics, Biology, English Language and English Literature all at GCSE level. Teaching Experience: 1) Jan-Nov 2000, Mathematics and English language tutor, private client. Students aged 11 and 13 sitting the GCE Intenational O' Level examinations. 2) Jan 1998 - Jul 2001, Islamic studies teacher, Haydari Madressah, Nairobi, Kenya. Islamic studies teacher at a night school in Nairobi, Kenya teaching 8 year old students. Class of 22 students. 3) Sep 2001 - Jun 2006, Belgrave School, Leicester, UK. Subjects taught there were Mathematics, English Language and English Literature. Class of 10 students. 4) Sep 2001 - 2006, Anysubject Ltd. private tutoring agency, Stamford, UK. I thereafter joined Anysubject Ltd. and worked with them between 2001 and 2006. This involved giving private tuition to GCSE students at their homes. I had clients in Leicester, Southampton, Cardiff and Bedford. During this time I taught Science in addition to other subjects mentioned above. 5) Aug 2007 - present, Alpha tutors Ltd. and Personal tutors Ltd, Cheshire, UK. |
Tutoring Approach: I offer just one hour introductory session initially to get to know the student and parent/guardian. This is an opportunity for you to ask questions about me, for me to provide you with my references and qualification details and for me to take the student through a few guide questions to recognise the level at which they are. I can then judge, according to your expectations, how many lessons and what duration per week/fortnight the student will require to reach that expectation. Eg. from General level to Credit level at Standard grade. Once completed you can then have a think over the lesson and engage in a conversation with your child if they feel confident enough to have me as their tutor and mentor. Once this is settled we can go ahead with further tuition. |

View Sarah's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Sarah: I am a recent graduate from the University of Nottingham, having studied Art History. I will be beginning my masters at UCL in September 2009. As a recent graduate, I have experience of the current educational system. This knowledge includes that of the structuring of contemporary exam papers and required approach to the answers as well as the university application process and general first-hand knowledge of the different institutions. I am friendly, patient and adaptable. |
Teaching Experience: I privately tutored a fellow student in History and Art History this year during the final year of their undergraduate degree. We both achieved 2.1's. I received a first in my final year. I have a wealth of child care experience, notably having cared for two children aged 9 and 11 every weekday evening after school for two years during my A Levels. This role included assisting with homework. |
Tutoring Approach: I am an analytical thinker with a methodical approach. Coursework essays; structuring, construction of argument, grammar, are my speciality. I find articulating information during teaching helps to clarify things in my own head, therefore encourage oral communication of ideas as a learning method. Explaining out loud what it is you want to write down helps to formulate a structure or argument. Patient and friendly one-on-one help allows the student to learn thoroughly at their own pace. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Sian: I am a qualified teacher of English working in a vibrant secondary school in South Bristol. I have been providing private tuition for two years now, helping those who just want help with their exam preparation for the SAT's and GCSE's as well as providing tuition to those who simply need additional support with their English skills. |
Teaching Experience: I am currently in my fifth year of teaching and have been responsible for the running of the SAT's for two years now. I am able to prepare student for all areas of the exam as well as provide general English assistance for those pupils who need additional support at any stage of their secondary school career. I am able to teach both the AQA and WJEC syllabuses for English Language and English Literature at GCSE ensuring pupils are well prepared for their exams as well as enable them to write successful pieces of coursework. |
Tutoring Approach: My own personal philosophy of education is the belief that whilst the goals of education are the same for all pupils, the process of achieving them is not. A good teacher needs to take into account pupils preferred learning styles and be able to implement differentiation effectively to meet these, whilst at the same time promoting a flexible and motivational atmosphere. The secret to being a successful teacher is enjoying it and I would welcome the opportunity to share the enjoyment I get from teaching with your child. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Sara: I am reliable, friendly and mature. I am a committed teacher but in the rare occasions that I have some spare time I enjoy reading (anything that allows me to escape reality...wizards, magic and dragons are particular favourites!), playing badminton or tennis, swimming and catching up with much neglected family and friends! I am the proud owner of a Mini Cooper, love driving and listening to music. |
Teaching Experience: My teaching experiences have highlighted a necessity to vary, adapt, reflect and improvise different teaching pedagogies to maximise the accessibility, understanding, progression and attainment encompassing all of the National Curriculum subjects. Applying suitable guidance, not only for academic achievement, but also to provide a stable learning environment where each pupil feels safe, valued, cared for and included. I am currently teaching year 3 in a primary school in Cheshunt but am competent and confident teaching all year groups, KS1 - KS4, covering core and foundation subjects of the National Curriculum. I am the ICT co-ordinator and believe ICT used appropriately can enhance and enthuse learning and understanding. I have taught in schools that vary vastly in demographics with children spanning a broad spectrum of abilities, highly gifted or talented to specific learning difficulties. I relish the daily challenges and the immeasurable rewards that teaching offers. |
Tutoring Approach: I strive to provide an effective and stimulating learning environment which motivates all pupils and captivates their attention; promoting equal opportunities through selecting and demonstrating appropriate teaching techniques; using a range of assessment styles to influence target setting and progression in learning. Tutoring provides a unique opportunity to work with a child on a one-to-one basis, focusing on specific areas of learning and development. I set clear learning objectives to scaffold and support learning. I endeavour to make learning personal, interesting and fun; however, I do have high expectations and will reward hard work at every opportunity. I have successfully tutored GCSE mathematics, KS2 Science for SATs, reading and writing skills (KS2/3) and will be happy to provide references on request. |
