My initial teaching experience stems from teaching sports in my spare time whilst at school - as a keen swimmer, I initially taught swimmers under the supervision of my club coach. I take a very relaxed and friendly attitude to teaching, making sure that my lessons are as fun and interesting as possible. Tutoring Approach:
When tutoring I aim to create a relaxed and informal atmosphere and encourage tutees to offer personal responses to the texts they are studying, which I can then help to develop and put into context. I believe working directly with the text is the best way to develop a critical approach and the best way to form an argument that can be used as the basis of an essay or exam answer.

Particularly in arts and humanities subjects, every pupil has their own individual approach. I believe that rather than forcing a particular style upon a tutee it is best to identify and develop their personal strengths, whilst helping to counter their weaknesses.

I'm Mark, I've lived in France for about 2 years where I did voluntary work for my church -which involved a lot of talking to people! I'd already done A-level French which gave me a grounding in grammar and spelling, but being in France took my speaking skills to a new level, making me highly fluent. This year I'm starting a degree in French and International Relations at Leeds to formalise my fluency.

Teaching Experience:
In France I helped teach colleagues French and also gave weekly English lessons to French speakers, so I've had a wide range of experience - from absolute beginners to near-fluent speakers.

Tutoring Approach:
With me, the disadvantage is that I am a student, not a professor. However, my strong points are that I'm young, I've actually lived in France for an extended period of time, and my language ability is very good. This means that I can really give an authentic tutoring experience with cultural knowledge, not just out-of-a-textbook standard lessons.

Also, because French is a learned language for me, I can more easily help people understand French from an English-speaker's point of view: I had to learn it too!

Teaching Experience:
I have previously worked in a secondary school on a one to one basis with pupils there. While in this position I worked with pupils on behavioural and motivation issues. I tutored pupils on various subjects in particular English. This would everything from setting them tasks to build up essential skills (for example vocabulary or creative writing) to reviewing their homework and essay in more detail. I also set individual targets with them and provided information to help pupils plan their further education and/or future career.

Tutoring Approach:
I believe everyone can achieve the very best grades. It is simply a matter of find a way to relate to the topic.
Different people have different needs which is why tuition works so well. It allows work to be done at the ideal speed for the individual focusing on the areas that need work.

I also believe a positive attitude and some encouragement works wonders. Highlighting areas in a topic or skill where a person is doing admirably as well as pointing out areas that need work is essential in teaching.

I am of the opinion that learning needs to be fun and varied in order to keep the student interested and engaged. For this reason, I like to incorporate many different techniques in to my teaching, such as games and role plays, as well as more traditional methods.
