Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Cheng: I am seventeen years old, holding a deferred place at Cambridge university for Natural Sciences (Physics). I have just graduated from Lenzie Academy, and I want to spend a year exploring the world. This includes teaching - to be able to pass knowledge on to others, and see that sparkle in their eyes, I look forward to it greatly. |
Teaching Experience: Although I certainly have no official teaching qualifications, I have always enjoyed, and often succeeded, in teaching others. My classmates say they treat my as more of an authority than my teachers - but I do not wish to come across like that. In all my subjects across Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics, I find the content to be not so consicely and clearly taught. And so I made my own notes - which can be as short as 10 pages for an entire subject - that I find to be all that one needs to ace at the exams, and indeed properly digest the syllabus. Indeed, my friends agreed that what seemed so daunting was deep down so simple and sometimes elegant - that they think my explanation was not even that important! I smile at that, of course, happy that they comprehend and not memorise. I have also helped my mother to go back into education, by showing her that A level/Higher mathematics is not as complex as she thought. |
Tutoring Approach: It is simple - I focus on understanding, and skills of analysis. At Advanced higher level at least, the easiest way to achieve an A is not even exam orientated teaching, in my opinion - because there are really not so many fundamental concepts to master (except in pure mathematics). I ask them to forget the "tricks" that they have been taught, and give them, in full honesty and clarity, the firm foundations from the beginning. These are both the deep rooted concepts, as well as methods of analysis. Further on in the teaching then, I would find that they can pick up things so quickly, so self-initiated and renewed with confidence - they do not even need my help a lot of the times! |

Experienced head of department and programme leader, delivering a range of programmes including vocational course for 11-18 year olds. I have taught a broad range of ability levels from OCN, Entry level to A Level. I enjoy business and have successfully delivered Education Business Partnership (EBP) events e.g. Dynamo Day. Also I have mentored successful Young Enterprise teams, the last team represented Gwent at the regional finals (2007), wining four awards, including the Sony Business Challenge. | About Jonathan: I have recently graduated from Exeter University with a First Class Mathematics Bsc Degree. I work part time at a bank and enjoy tutoring on evenings and weekends. Outside work and tutoring I spend much of my time watching football, playing golf and tennis and playing/listening to music. |
Teaching Experience: Throughout University I helped many of my peers with their studies especially those reading mathematics, but also those doing the sciences and engineering much of which is mathematical. I am currently tutoring a range of pupils from younger students for SATs through to University students. |
Tutoring Approach: I really enjoy explaining methods to tutees so they are not only able to find the correct answer but also are able to explain how and why they got that answer. I feel this builds a greater overall understanding making it easier for the student to progress with the subject in the future and apply similar methods within other subject areas. I do this through an excellent understanding of mathematics and clear, concise explanations of solutions and methods. |

View Emese's Profile
Types of Tutoring: From their home
| About Emese: I am a native Hungarian specialises in Hungarian folk music, with long-term experience performing and teaching violin. I studied classical music up to secondary school level and then continued my studies privately for three years with the lead violinist of the Tukros Hungarian folk music band. I also have a strong interest in Jazz and classical music. In 2005 I graduated from the University of Szeged (Hungary) with a master degree in communications. I chose to study communication because of my great interest in world cultures, and through my education, I wanted to understand other cultures in an objective way. |
Teaching Experience: I play violin since I was 7 started to learn classical music. I joined the local folk music group belonged to the folk dance group to do the musical accompliment performing productions. During these years I continued my studies in classical music until I finished the High School and went to University. (These details are involved in my CV). I had such a strong interest in playing Hungarian folk music, so I had private tutors to improve my improvisation skills. During the university years I was asked to do musical accomplishment for another dance group which was very highly qualified collective including the musical and dance side as well. I was also asked to teach the recruitment for the same group. I had students aged 6-13 from beginners to high level ready to go to stage. I had to teach theory of music explaining how to read music. I was asked to be the violin teacher for special music camp in the summer where the children had to learn several countries` folk dance songs strictly keeping the specific traits. That is fact I have never taught classical music but the Hungarian folk music is such a difficult tunes to play that sometimes is more complicated to cope with it than with the classical compositions. I feel able to teach any range of musical styles and the age group or the knowledge of the students does not matter either. |
Tutoring Approach: I prefer to teach music by following and listening to the melody and rhythm because, I believe, that only this is the emotion conveyed and the structure at the music understood. I teach folk and classical music and I believe that the student should be free to choose the composition to play; this is especially important for beginners because it motivates to continue to improve. |

View Barbara's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Barbara: I am a 25 year old woman and I am French. I have a "maitrise" of English; in England it is equivalent to a MA. At the moment I am language assistant in a comprehensive school in Liverpool: that is to say I help pupils from 11 to 16 years old with French. I mainly help those who want to take their GCSE in French. |
Teaching Experience: In France, I was "surveillante" in a collge (pupils aged 11 to 15); that is to say I had to supervise them at break and lunch time. Moreover, I helped them with their homeworks. I also gave private tuitions of English to a 14 year-old boy and to a lady grown-up who wanted to go back to university. |
Tutoring Approach: Personally, I am convinced that practising a language with a Native is a great opportunity for a student to hear authentic speaking and it is also the opportunity to pronunce words the right way. Moreover, as I am French, I can give them some tips so as not to say huge mistakes during the GCSE exam. |

| About Charlotte: I am an e-learning designer by profession and graduated with a first-class neuroscience degree last year. I'm fun and friendly, but bring a lot of focus to my work. |
Teaching Experience: I provided teaching support to a class of year seven art students in a secondary school for a year on a weekly basis. I've also been a biology tutor to an A-level student for the last 2 months and am enjoying it so much that I'd like to take on more. |
Tutoring Approach: I'll look closely at your sylabus and identify exactly what you need to learn. Before any lesson we'll talk about any concepts or techniques you're finding hard to master, or any specific help you need before you can hand in a piece of work. My tutoring technique is perfect for visual learners - people who are able to learn and remember information using pictures, colours and cue cards. Difficult concepts are also broken down into chunks so they are easier to learn and keep in your mind. Before the end of each lesson you'll have a very short quiz to help reinforce what you've learnt. This will also show up things that either you need to work on, or that you have learnt well and should take confidence from. You might also need help with exam technique - I can spend time helping you develop these with tailored exercises. |

| About Enrico: Enrico Bertelli (Montebelluna (TV - ITA) 29/08/1984 - ) Italian Percussionist, Musicologist. Deeply interested in Contemporary Music, with a special emphasis on the Percussion music repertory. A rich background mixes the theoretical preparation achieved through university, with the instrumental skills gained through intense studies at the Conservatoire and at the various master classes. Since moving to the UK, worked closely with composers, investigating the possibilities of percussion instruments and trying to push the conventional boundaries. This demonstrated by work with composer Jack White in the duo Percatronics for percussion instruments and live electronics. Firmly convinced of the importance of an informed performance, constantly approaches every piece both as a performer and as a musicologist. This duality helps achieve a better understanding of the music and enables communicating with the audience with sounds and words. The current PhD in Contemporary Performance - Percussion at York University, follows an MA in Performance Studies at Cardiff University (Distinction), BA in TARS - Tecniche Artistiche e dello Spettacolo at Ca'Foscari University - Venice and Diploma in Strumenti a Percussione at the Conservatorio di Verona both with top marks. Recent teachers: Ruud Wiener (vibraphone), Igor Lesnik (multi-percussion), Jasmin Kolberg (marimba), Matteo di Francesco (marching band) at the Giornate della Percussione at the Conservatorio `G.B. Pergolesi` in Fermo (ITALY). Michael Burritt (marimba) (Evanston - IL). Current Teachers: Chris Brannick (multi-percussion and Ghanaian music), Michael Skinner (Basle drumming and orchestral techniques) at GSMD (London). Recent performances: AIAF - Asolo International Art-film Festival (Italy), Libera Universidad de Madrid (Spain) and Sonic Fusion Festival (Edinburgh - Scotland). Many other concerts in Contemporary Music Festivals in Italy where held with Brake Drum Percussion, De Mallet Duo, Ensemble l'Arsenale, Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto. Before entering the profession, he worked with Cardiff University Chamber, Contemporary and New Music ensembles and won the Second Prize at the Concorso del Teatro Filarmonico di Verona. Principal percussionist in the Youth Orchestras Ecce Gratum, La Rjouissance and Banda F. Visentin with solo playing and tv broadcastings. Enrico writes regularly for Finnegans - Quarterly Contemporary Art Review and the Cultural Association Impero Bizantino.
