About Lorenzo:
I am Italian, aged 29, currently living in Brighton where I finished a MSc in Evolutionary and Adaptive Systems (including topics such as computer programming, mathematics, evolutionary studies, biology, neuroscience and philosophy).

In my free time I am a Tango dancer (Argentinian Tango) and a photographer.

Teaching Experience:

My teaching experience is (unfortunately!) limited to:
- teaching system administration to professionals (a 40-hour crash course on linux and system administration)
- informally teaching computer science, networking and UNIX/Linux administration to fellows of the Linux User Group in Mantova (of which I am a co-founder)
- volunteering to teach pupils upon request (in Italy)

Tutoring Approach:

Apart from love of science, the main reason why I enrolled into college the second time was to pursue the academic career and to become a professor. Even though my teaching experience has been limited due to lack of concrete possibilities (tutoring is much less common in Italy than in the UK), every time I had the chance to teach it was one of the most beautiful experience in my life. The joy of seeing the other person understand and learn (a skill, a theory, an application, a concept) cannot be compared to anything else.

About Gerard:
I'm 24 years old, and I'm from Barcelona. For this reason I can teach you in Spanish and Catalan too. I'm an open-minded person who loves sports, especially football, and reading and writing.

Teaching Experience:

October 2006-June 2007: Social Guarantee Program (PGS) teacher in El Masnou Adults School (Catalonia) - teaching Catalan, English, technology, physics and chemistry.
January-February 2006: Spanish for foreigners' teacher in El Masnou Adults School (Catalonia).
1999-2005: One to one teacher for primary and high school students.

Tutoring Approach:

If you want to learn a language you have to know the grammar and the vocabulary, but more important than this is know the function. This means that you have to know when you can use a specific structure.
My teaching method is first, to know the grammar, second, to know the basic vocabulary. And finally, practise a lot in speaking, reading, writing and understanding.

About Oliver:
I am a young (24) but very experienced artist who specialises in drawing and painting. After selling my first drawing when I was just 9 years old, I have sold drawings, paintings and prints all over the world. I use a wide range of materials and media in my work from pen and ink through to charcoal, acrylic, and even digital photography. My favoured style is realistic, though I often play around with different colours, and one of my strongest skills lies in creating a real sense of depth in my work. I have worked alongside my fair share of world famous artists, and have a good relationship with several London collectors as well as models.

Teaching Experience:

I have no formal teaching qualifications, though I have myself experienced UK and US high schools and UK art colleges (up to degree level). Drawing upon my own experiences I have enjoyed helping a variety of students (from age 5 through to 26) to enhance their own artistic skills.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in an informal and relatively unstructured approach to developing a student's skills. Assesing each individual's strong and weak points I then tailor a program to exploit the student's qualities. Most of all I believe in making the learning process understandable and enjoyable, putting everthing into a meaningful context so that the student can develop things further on their own.

About Darren:
I am PhD student at Cardiff University. My broad background subject is Media Studies, but my main area of interest is media, politics, and journalism (theory). I have strong reading, writing, and research skills so I can offer help in a variety of disciplines.

Teaching Experience:

I teach seminars to undergraduate degree students at Cardiff University, so I do already have experience of teaching (and marking) in my field of interest. The degree that I teach on is Journalism, Film and Media, which concentrates on a variety of media-based, political, and social topics.

I have also been a student mentor at secondary education level so I have one to one experience of tutoring from this work as well.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is similar to that of my class-based seminars: I teach in a friendly, relaxed, encouraging and open atmosphere. I like students to engage by exploring their own ideas and questions as much as possible to ensure that they are fully involved in gaining an understanding of the subject concerned.

I always take a constructive and positive approach to teaching to ensure that students feel comfortable and confident and can learn in a productive environment at all times.

About Carly:
I am twenty-four year old primary school teacher. I am originally from Toronto, Canada and have spent the last year teaching in Glasgow and the year previous to that at Teacher's college in Glasgow at The University of Strathclyde. I enjoy reading, bike riding, running, and out activities. I thrive in any type of environment and am quite adaptable to any situation I am put in. I spent the majority of my childhood as a competitive figure skater where I learned the skills of teamwork and hardwork. I believe I am a happy, outgoing, and friendly person with an inviting personality.

Teaching Experience:

For the past year I have been temporary teaching throughout Glasgow in a variety of primary classes in different socio-economical areas. I have had experiencing teaching all subjects in primary and have specialized as an art teacher and health teacher for primaries one through to seven.

Tutoring Approach:

In regards to tutoring I structure my lessons much like I would a classroom lesson. I like it to be interesting, interactive, and engaging as well as informative. With tutoring however, more material can be covered in a lesson or less material based on the learner. As well i find it important to meet with the tutee first to gain some background into their education, difficulties and learning style. Therefore, lessons can be based to gain maximum learning. I believe in a relaxed, comfortable tutoring environment where the learner is keen to participate and keen to ask questions.

Teaching Experience:

My past work experience includes five years of teaching EFL to Romanian postgraduate students at the Naval Academy in Constanta. In addition to teaching six hour per day English intensive courses and administering placement and achievement tests to students, my job responsabilities related to administrative duties such as timetabling for different language courses; in-service teacher development and training workshops on methodology-related topics (Developing learners' autonomy, Material development for General English, Task-based/ Communicative syllabus design, Teacher education and supervision, Integrated approaches to testing etc); responsibility and managing the resource centre for refreshment English courses; developing needs analysis questionnaires and interpreting statistical data; ongoing assistance and report writing to the head of department.

About Philip:
I'm a 34 year old freelance writer and tutor who possesses a BSc Honours degree in Applied Biology as well as a Masters degree in Professional writing. I have written radio plays for BBC radio as well as features for magazines and newspapers in the Southwest. In addition, I have travelled widely in Europe teaching English and so have a broad understanding of other countries and cultures. As well as my native English I also speak Spanish.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught English as a foreign language for nearly eight years and have taught in Poland, Greece, France, Spain and the UK. During those years I have taught all levels from elementary to advanced level and from young children to older adults. In addition, to teaching English as a foreign language, I also teach creative writing courses in Bristol from people wanting to learn more about the creative process especially novels and short stories.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in being prepared for all situations in the classroom which means my approach to lesson planning is very through and organised. My teaching manner is relaxed as I want my students to feel comfortable on order to gain as much knowledge as possible in the allotted time. This is especially important in one-to-one lessons. I endeavour to use my own materials wherever possible and depending on the level make them relevant to current topics and events. This is particular important when teaching advanced level English Language or Biology. Needless to say I am always punctual and smart.

About Victoria:
I am a fully qualified teacher in my thirties, married with one child.

Becoming a private tutor has enabled me to spend more time with my son and also allows me to develop my passion for teaching and learning, which isn't always possible with a class of 30. Teaching one child, or a small group, I can really see significant progress, both in terms of their understanding and their confidence.

I offer maths and English tuition to all primary ages, as well as adult literacy tuition, including English as a foreign language.

Current CRB check.

Teaching Experience:

I taught for 3 years in a London primary school, covering Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. During this time I taught many children with special needs, behavioural difficulties and who have English as a second language.

I am fully up-to-date with the National Curriculum, current teaching practices and schemes of work used in primary schools.

I also have ESOL qualifications and experience teaching English to foreign-language adults.

Tutoring Approach:

An initial assessment is carried out and I then develop an individual programme to move the child forward.

I have access to a wide range of resources and use a variety of teaching methods to make learning enjoyable, interactive and meaningful.

Parents have often positively commented on my caring and encouraging approach to teaching.

Small group tuition is also available; it can sometimes be beneficial to have a friend to work with.

Tutoring Approach:

I think the most important thing for any student to be able to do is ask questions. I make it a point to instill courage and confidence in my tutees because in my opinion these are the building blocks of learning, in any subject.

My sessions tend to be relaxed and informal, though I aim to cover much ground per tutorial. The intensity of study can be decided by the student according to his or her needs, experience and age.

Above all I think learning should be fun and liberating. From my experience both as a student and tutor I think I make an able, friendly and enthusiastic tutor.

About Maha:
I have flexible hours and a flexible approach to tutoring.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught in university and community college classrooms for the last ten years, both French and English, language and literature. I have worked at summer schools, teaching language to classes aged eight to fifteen. I have also conducted private lessons with all ages, from eleven to sixty.

Tutoring Approach:

When tutoring a student who is taking classes as well as being tutored, I prefer to use their primary course as a starting off point for the lesson, but to take the themes and delve more deeply and provide more opportunity to practice. When tutoring an individual not affiliated with a program, I prefer to work with the student to devise the type of course that suits them, with a focus based on what they intend to use their language skills for.
