About Shaun:
I am a friendly, easy going person from Newcastle. I love travelling and have travelled around the world. I love teaching and helping people learn and I hope this comes through when I teach.

Teaching Experience:

I currently work as an English and A-level Media Studies Teacher in a secondary school in Newcastle Upon Tyne. I have three years teaching experience. I am also studying a Masters in Teaching and Learning.

Tutoring Approach:

I take an interactive approach to tutoring. I try to install the necessary tools in people to enable them to learn about their learning. I try to not dictate or simply talk at people. I assume the role of facilitator with the aim of bringing out the learning as this has greater long term benefits.

About Nikki:
I am a 20 year old female university student studying a French and Japanese BA at Cardiff university. I am currently in my second year and I'm hoping to find some people who would like me to help them with their learning, because helping others to learn only reinforces what you already know, and I like to keep my brain active!

Teaching Experience:

At the moment I have no proper experience as a tutor, the closest I can claim to have had is helping my neighbour's children with ICT and helping my younger sister with French. I would like to try being a tutor as I've been told it's an enjoyable experience, and will give me some valuable experience for when I begin a teaching course after university.

Tutoring Approach:

I am willing to teach in a variety of ways, both online and offline, as well as helping you/your child to advance in the learning of your chosen subject.

I would begin by assessing how far the tutee has already progressed in the subject and try to work out any weak areas, and then continue by creating exercises and situations designed to try and improve in those areas.

For example; if I were tutoring the tutee in French and I found that their weakness was in the spoken language, I would have conversations with them and try to involve them in activities that use French language, such as watching French programmes, listening to French radio or the opportunity to speak with a native French speaker. I would also record the conversations so that the tutee could listen to them later and hear their own mistakes, then work on trying to correct
them.

If the tutoring were a completely online situation, I would communicate with the tutee via all methods of internet communication (IM, skype, e-mail) and use a similar approach to the one I would in person.

About Michael:
I am a postgraduate at the University of Bristol; I have a varied educational background in Music, Sociology, Theology, Classical Civilisation, and particularly (my main subject) Philosophy. Within philosophy my areas are quite expansive; ethics, metaphysics, aesthetics, history of philosophy, philosophy of science, epistemology and the interplay between them.

I have an undergraduate degree in Sociology and Philosophy (2:i) and am reading towards my MA, moving on to PhD.

Teaching Experience:

I have run discussion groups and run talks and seminars of my work, and encouraged discussions in groups; I have also been a teaching assistant at a primary school.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to help people realise their potential, and help people to help themselves. What is important is to make the material seem approachable, and never to say something is hard; that already makes it difficult from the word go. There is a difference between having lots of steps and procedure, to being hard. Nothing is really hard, its just not seen how it can be overcome.

About Claire:
I am a recent Oxford University graduate, and gained a 2.1 in my French and German Degree, with distinction in the colloquial use of French and German. I am able to cater for all levels of language learning, from the beginner up to the university student. I can also teach a broad range of language skills, from reading, writing, listening and speaking to literature study and exam preparation, plus university entry, including Oxbridge.

Teaching Experience:

I lived and worked as an English teacher in France for a year where I was teaching a range of language skills to groups of 4 - 25 students, of differing ages and abilities. As such I am very flexible as to what age, level or number of students I can tutor. I have also undertaken some one-to-one tuition in the UK.

Tutoring Approach:

As above, I can teach a broad range of language skills, all of which are essential to the competent linguist. Students tend to learn best by understanding the language, rather than merely learning set phrases 'by heart', and it is therefore this principle that governs my tutoring. I try to use a variety of language learning resources, from text books and work books to radio and video clips, music and film. I am extremely enthusiastic about my subjects, and so I will try to make your learning fun and enjoyable in a relaxed, but focused, atmosphere.

About Swati:
I am a recent graduate from the University of the West of England, Bristol with a degree in Drama and Cultural and Media Studies. I currently work as a freelance radio presenter but have a passion for working with children. I have a good grasp of the English language and am also comfortable with numbers and am therefore confident of being able to tutor both English and Mathematics to young children at primary school level with the intention of preparing the child for Eleven Plus entrance exams.

Teaching Experience:

My teaching experience to date entails working with children aged between 6 - 16 years. I have previously tutored young children both individually and in small groups. Most of my work with the children was over two years and was carried out under a government project which aimed to raise the children's aspirations and awareness in higher education.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring ensures that the child's academic needs will be catered for. Working with children requires a great deal of patience and communication, both of which are my strongest attributes. This will enable me to teach the children using methods that are suitable for that particular child and will allow me to teach the child at the right pace. My motivational and creative approach to teaching will enlighten, stimulate and promote growth and development for the child. Given my current experience of working with children, I believe that I can be a positive influence for the child in a learning environment.

About Rebecca:
I am currently a sales professional working in the pharmaceutical industry. I graduated four years ago from the University of Southampton, with a BSc(Hons) in Biomedical Sciences, at 2:1. I 'fell' into tutoring recently through mentoring adult colleagues who were taking GCSE and A-Level biology, and having thoroughly enjoyed the experience I am now offering GCSE and A-Level tuition in Human Biology and GCSE teaching in Physics, Maths and Chemistry. I also offer tuition in groups if required (prices depend on group size), so groups of friends can get together to study if they prefer!

Teaching Experience:

* Previous coaching experience for GCSE and A-Level on a casual level
* Teaching adult colleagues towards the ABPI examination (Associate of the British Pharmaceutical Industry)
* All students for academic session '07 - '08 set to exceed predicted grades at GCSE and A-Level
* Experience with challenged learners, including Asperger's Syndrome

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is very much lead by the individual being tutored. I am flexible to cover any areas the student would like to discuss and develop. I offer either a structured teaching programme, with agreed learning objectives, or a more relaxed tutorial, with an emphasis on identification of strengths and weaknesses. I can also offer support with coursework, spot tests and revision help as required. Group sessions, closer to exams, can be a fun way to introduce competition, which my tutees have found stimulating and productive to their revision!

About Indrek:
My name is Indrek Sepp, I am a 21 year old second year student of physics at the University of Durham. I am friendly, approachable and passionate about science and mathematics. I very much enjoy teaching these people in general because I like to show just how fascinating and elegant they can be.

As a sidenote: I can provide confirmation about my CRB check

Teaching Experience:

I achieved three A-Levels at A grade in Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry in 2005. I have an intimate understanding of these subjects and being an active student myself I have a methodology to revision and exam preperation which is flexible and applicable to those of all abilities. I have been helping my friends and my siblings to study for their exams which involve Science and Mathematics from my A-levels right up to now with in University. I do this simply because I enjoy tuition for its own sake. I have helped a wide range of people with a wide range of abilities to achieve an understanding of how mathematics and science work.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is to simply work through past exam papers in order to give the tutee a familiarity with the type of questions asked, and to gauge their relative strengths and weaknesses. I shall impart my experience and understanding to solidify the former while minimising the latter. The A-level syllabi have not changed fundamentally since my A-levels, neither has the format of the questions, how they are marked and the technique with which to approach them. You will find my tutoring to be straightforward and concise.

I think that the sciences and mathematics are generally not taught very well at school. I believe that excelling in them lies not in learning dozens of formulae but with understanding the simple principles upon which they are built. Not only is this approach more interesting and intellectually rewarding, it also allows you to approach any questions asked in exams with confidence and ease. I am absolutely confident in my ability to prepare prospective tutees to achieve not only their maximal marks in the subjects of Maths, Chemistry and Physics; but also to instil a deeper, more unified understanding and appreciation of them.
