About Nikki:
I am a 20 year old female university student studying a French and Japanese BA at Cardiff university. I am currently in my second year and I'm hoping to find some people who would like me to help them with their learning, because helping others to learn only reinforces what you already know, and I like to keep my brain active!

Teaching Experience:

At the moment I have no proper experience as a tutor, the closest I can claim to have had is helping my neighbour's children with ICT and helping my younger sister with French. I would like to try being a tutor as I've been told it's an enjoyable experience, and will give me some valuable experience for when I begin a teaching course after university.

Tutoring Approach:

I am willing to teach in a variety of ways, both online and offline, as well as helping you/your child to advance in the learning of your chosen subject.

I would begin by assessing how far the tutee has already progressed in the subject and try to work out any weak areas, and then continue by creating exercises and situations designed to try and improve in those areas.

For example; if I were tutoring the tutee in French and I found that their weakness was in the spoken language, I would have conversations with them and try to involve them in activities that use French language, such as watching French programmes, listening to French radio or the opportunity to speak with a native French speaker. I would also record the conversations so that the tutee could listen to them later and hear their own mistakes, then work on trying to correct
them.

If the tutoring were a completely online situation, I would communicate with the tutee via all methods of internet communication (IM, skype, e-mail) and use a similar approach to the one I would in person.

About Jack:
Hi. I'm a 22 year old teacher who graduated with a masters degree in maths and physics (MMath&Phys) from The University of Manchester. I have recently accepted a post teaching English to adults in South Korea which starts in January and am based in Liverpool until January 3rd, in the meantime looking to teach school and college students Maths and Physics. I'm an easygoing guy and my hobbies are football, socialising and reading.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored various students whilst at university - at GCSE and A level - and have also done a 2 month post teaching English in South Korea to 8 to 15 year olds at a summer camp.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to teaching maths and physics is to encourage the students to use the same techniques I used to get my A grades in maths, further maths and physics at A2. Essentially, this is a focus on understanding why the methods used make sense and repeated practice of past exam papers. I am confident I can help.

About Shaun:
The first point I would like to share is that I am passionate about the medium of photography. Since leaving college in 1983 I count myself very fortunate to have been continually employed in this industry. A career that has resulted with me meeting and working with very interesting people and travelling all over the world. Throughout my time as a commercial/PR/Editorial Photographer I have made it a top priority to keep my personal portfolio 'alive', continually developing it's look and feel and in doing so carving out a very individualistic style. By way of exhibiting whenever/wherever possible I see it as a great compliment that my work has been taken abroad by clients to places such as Milan, Paris, New York and Barcelona. Further information is included below but least to say I extremely enjoy sharing my knowledge and, if I happen to encourage, enlighten and/or inspire somebody, I see that as a win, win situation...

Teaching Experience:

I have taught evening classes and worked three years as Photographic Officer within a University. Some of my duties included demonstrating darkroom processing and printing methods, with over 10 years experience with Adobe Photoshop I was also responsible for guiding students through digital scanning, retouching and manipulation techniques. As stated below I also gained my City & Guilds 7302 teaching certificate.

Tutoring Approach:

I find that my intuitive teaching style has developed from two main foundations. A natural desire to teach and the personal reward I receive from witnessing somebody progress through the subject, having recognised a personal interest in a given area and the desire to tackle the learning experience. I'm also very aware that teaching is a two way interaction, with this in mind it is very important to monitor the student's understanding at key stages by way of question and answer/feedback opportunities through the lesson.

I fully realise that no matter how well organised and imaginative a lesson is planned there are difficult and challenging aspects to the learning environment. I attempt to make the experience as enjoyable and stimulating as possible and, when hurdles arise, address these in an empathetic way with alternative strategies to address them.

I take a ground up approach, begin with the basics and assume nothing. Necessary for the young of course, however mature students may have built their knowledge on pieces of information ( with varying degrees of accuracy) and/or leap frogged certain areas completely. So, without wanting to seem patronising, I take things slowly to begin with but focus on the main sections of the subject. Parallel topics will be touched on, such as the history of photography, but these are always taken in context rather than dwelt on.

Learning can and should be fun, fulfilling and rewarding. I aim to take the tutees to their highest possible level and through this discover more about the subject and themselves.

About Chantal:
I recently graduated from University of Cambridge in Medicine, and I am currently studying for a Master's in Immunology at Imperial College London.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught piano music theory to children and adults for 8 years. I have also taught science and maths of various levels to children for 6 years.

Tutoring Approach:

I find that a firm understanding of the subject, an understanding of a child's mind, and an appreciation of their other pressures makes a more supportive tutor. I also believe that questions and past papers provide a vital revision tool and test the knowledge of a student. It is time-wasting to merely lecture someone without ensuring their understanding of a topic. I am very passionate about teaching children because I believe that through the correct supervision and hard work, you can reach your full potential to succeed in examinations.

About Christine:
I am currently studying for a degree in Humanities with Classics with the Open University. I am passionate about Latin and Greek and Ancient History. I have also recently attended a course in New Testament Greek at the University of Cambridge's Institute of Continuing Learning.

I learned Latin and Greek at school up to O'Level but two years ago I decided that I could no longer do without any Classics in my life and began to study at degree level.

Teaching Experience:

Before leaving work to start a family one of my positions was as a Staff Training Officer with the Department of Employment where I trained adults in job related skills. I currently manage a counselling and advice centre in the voluntary sector where my counselling role involves working with young people.

I also have two teenage sons myself so I am experienced in supporting young people in home learning and exam revision.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is student-centred focusing on what their needs are whilst at the same time having a clear goal in mind. Latin and Greek inevitably involve learning grammar but I like to get students to read adapted texts as soon as possible so that there is a real sense of achievement.

If students are already learning Latin and Greek in another context my aim is to make sure that I support that learning. I aim to ensure that they have a good understanding of what they are learning at school (or elsewhere) by consolidating grammar and providing lots of practice which builds confidence.

About Bob:
I am a retired teacher who wishes to keep active in the fields of education and learning. I have taught for many years as well as being active in youth work and am currently a member of the ACF (Army Cadet Force). I also have extensive experience of tutoring, having filled this role for the last three years with a numberof agencies.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught for nearly thirty years, in schools both abroad and in Britain. I have taught in private and state schools, was a Head of Department and a Head of Year for many years. I have taught Physics, Chemistry, Maths, Modular Science and Combined Science to KS3, KS4 and KS5. I have also been involved in Adult Education.

Tutoring Approach:

Most pupils benefit from a one-to-one approach, having the undivided attention of a qualified teacher. This, less formal environment tends to promote trust and aids the learning process. After a short time I can identify individual problems or issues and initiate learning strategies to overcome these. The importance of developing a confident, professional relationship with the pupil cannot be overstresed.

About Emma:
I am 17 years old, and I attend Uppingham school. I study French, History and Economics for A-level, with the plan to study history at university. I really enjoy communicating with children, and love teaching people to understand something. From my own experience I realise that a good teacher is key to enjoying a subject, as a result I would love to tutor pupils in french.

Teaching Experience:

I have worked in a local school - Granard Primary school, where I taught children of a variety of ages.
I worked in the local Rainbow Brownies association where I coordinated various activities for children, including basic french, arts and craft and cookery.
I have been offered a job with Camp Beaumont for this summer where I will be in charge of a large group of children, helping them with sporting activities and arts and crafts.
I have tutored my younger sister (age 9) in maths and french for the last 4 years.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that it is important to understand the way in which the particular pupil learns, and to respond to signals from the child. My approach would certainly be one of encouragement and praise, showing the pupil that they are perfectly able to understand and communicate in french. I would place emphasis on the grasp of basic grammar, such as understanding the present, perfect, imperfect and future tenses. I believe that this is the key to being a strong linguist. I would make every effort to make sessions enjoyable for the pupil by using games and other such techniques to help them learn. Finally I believe that it is important to back up what the pupil is being taught at school, and could perhaps help with some homework assignments.

About Jody:
I am 31 years old, and I have been working as a web developer for the last 8 years. I work in the city centre and live in the Yorkhill area with my girlfriend and our dog Max.

I am friendly and approachable, which is reflected in the tutoring I provide.

Teaching Experience:

I am applying to do a PGCE next year and I have gained experience to help back up my application. This includes sitting in with a computing class at school and volunteering for a local company to assist with their IT requirements and to train an employee to use it.

Part of my job is to train and assist clients and fellow colleagues with any and all problems that may arise. This could be from training people to use our in-house CMS to setting up networks.

I have recently trained some clients using Micorsoft Sharepoint, a product which I myself had only been using for a month. I had managed to grasp how the software worked and over the course of a weekend devised a simple but straight forward 3 hour long training program. The feedback fom this was excellent.

Tutoring Approach:

Firstly, I like to meet with the student to find out their level of IT knowledge, as well as to find out what area(s) they wish to learn. I also like to find out any hobbies and interests in order to incorporate these as I feel that this keeps things interesting. I then construct a loosely structured course which acts as a guide for each lesson.

Each lesson is broken down into run throughs, practical examples, knowledge and understanding to make sure the student is taking the lesson in/understands it, as well as a Q & A. I also like to set simple tasks for the following lesson, although this generally depends on their general workload.
