Having graduated from Cambridge University with a degree in Economics in July 2006, I have spent the last 12 months working at HM Treasury as a Government Economist. However, this experience confirmed to me that i do not want to pursue a career in Economics and have instead returned to University to undertake a law conversion course with the hope to eventually qualifying as a solicitor.

Whilst completing this course, I will be working part time as a tutor, teaching both Maths and Economics up to A level standard. I am also happy to teach reading and writing skills to children working towards Key Stages 1 and 2.

As well as an outstanding academic record, my excellent interpersonal skills and my ability to communicate complex or technical ideas in a simple manner make me an excellent choice as a tutor.

I am also used to working with children of all ages having worked at a Saturday kids club and Brighton Child Contact Centre. I am also the eldest of four children!

Teaching Experience:
At college, I was a school mentor, travelling regularly to local schools to help children with basic reading and writing.

During my gap year I tutored several different children both for Key Stage 1 and 2 Mathematics.

Over the last four years I have also helped my younger brother and sisters prepare for GCSE's and AS/ A Levels.

Tutoring Approach:
I do not think there can be one approach to tutoring as the best method depends on the strengths, age, attention span and personality of the student. Before tutoring a student, I like to spend some time with them assessing what learning methods they enjoy and which methods are most successful. I also like to assess their enthusiasm and ability as these are both key to how I structure my lessons.

For example, some students may find the standard teaching approach most successful, however, other students might need the tutor to present the material in an innovative manner to make it interesting and also most importantly to ensure that it is remembered.

I do, however, like to give all my students work to do in between lessons to ensure that they have fully understood the concepts and can apply them in the correct way. I also find that if they can complete these, their confidence in their own ability greatly increases and this further improves their ability in the subject.

Teaching Experience:

Tutoring Approach:
I use a range of teaching methods geared to the individual student's preferred learning styles, and try to work with the student. I believe that, in order for the tutee to gain the maximum possible benefit from the tuition process, tuition needs to be a 2-way process. I prepare and deliever the sessions, but I will also set the tutee regular homework so they can consolidate and practise their skills at home.
I usually deliver tuition sessions in my own home (New Romney, Kent). If very local to me, I may consider travelling to tutee's homes, but there would be a small additional cost if travel expenses were incurred.

Depending on the regularity of the sessions, every few sessions we would review our progress towards our final goal and evaluate whether previously defined issues have been met and whether or not new areas of study have arisen. I would expect the pupil to have made some agreed preparation work prior to each tutoring session.

About Sheilagh:
I have been living in Muswell Hill for the last 25 years and have become familiar with the strengths and weaknesses of local schools. I greatly enjoy the contact with young people, having brought up 3 daughters and I am still in contact with a number of my former pupils,now at university.

Teaching Experience:
I started off teaching German in adult education classes, followed by 10 years of ESL (English as a Second Language) in local community classes. For the last ten years I have been tutoring German and French, interspersed with some EFL at a local language school. I tutor in German from beginners to A2 and in French up to AS level, and have up top date knowledge of syllabus requirements of the main exam boards along with many years of past papers. I have also taught pupils who are being educated at home with great success.

Tutoring Approach:
I put a great deal into creating a very good relationship with my pupils and I feel that it is important to have a good rapport with their family too where possible. Whilst focussing on exams where appropriate I also aim to ensure language learning is enjoyable. All skills are covewred, with an emphasis on oral work. I always give homework, unless there is a convincing reason not to!

About Vasilis:
I am a Greek native speaker and I have a degree in Psychology, earned in Greece. My knowledge in Greek extends to both ancient and contemporary Greek. I am 26 years old, male, and I enjoy most things that people of my age do (outing, travelling, music, photgraphy etc etc)

I have a years-long experience in teaching Greek to young persons in Greece, in order for them to improve their knowledge and marks at school.

My approach to teaching Greek is interactive. There are some things that need to be learned and taught but I dont believe in the teacher-pupil relationship. The material is carefully and mostly prepared by myself.

I am a trained assessor/trainer and have had experience of working with children of all ages from pre-scholl though to young adults of various academic ability.
I specialise in Childcare but also have a good grounding in English and in developing literacy, numeracy and reading skills.

Tutoring Approach:
Firm but fair! I believe that making learning is enhanced by creating a stimulating and enjoyable environment. All children learn at their own pace and whist diffeent techniques can sometime speed up that process, success can come at different rates and at differing levels and I think that encouragement for all achievements,however small, is more inspiring than rigid expectations.
Planning for the desired result and frequent monitoring of progress help me, as the tutor to determine whether the teaching methods have to be adapted to meet the childs needs.

I have taught French and English from false beginners to advanced levels. I have done private tutoring in both languages in France and the Netherlands. I have also taught a universities in the UK and am currently teaching part-time at St Andrews and at the language centre of the University of Glasgow. I have used different teaching materials, for instance OU courses as well as BBC language courses. I tend to mix different resources and formats: written texts, audio documents, exercice books.

Tutoring Approach:
First of all I enquire about the specific needs of the pupils (areas of interests, as well as the main difficulties in acquiring language skills). I then adapt the content of the lessons to each individual's needs, this may entail going over homework, re-examining an exercise or texts studied in school. I try and adapt the content for each person according to their age group, level of proficiency and personal needs.
