Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Lorna: I enjoy working with others very much and that is why I enjoy tutoring. It is a chance to facilitate the development of someone else's goal, whether that is passing A level Latin or becoming proficient at conversational English. |
Teaching Experience: I have worked with students and professionals on motivation and success for their qualifications. I am constantly upskilling my qualifications so am familiar with the organisation, development and rigourousness required to study successfully. I have tutored in Higher Latin, and Business Environment English, and currently work with Conversational and Everyday English Usage with a Spanish friend. I have applied for my Criminal Records Bureau clearance check - pending. I am currently upskilling to a qualification in CELTA - exam due in three months. |
Tutoring Approach: I am very goal centric - I like my student to actually feel exhilirated that they have learned. I like the student to be able to walk out the door confident to say 'I know that'. For comprehension and reason based assessments, my student can use me to rehearse scenarios, argue against, and practice their skills. I am familiar with Learning Styles and can adapt my teaching to maximise the benefits. I enjoy using mind maps and conversation and movement where possible to cover the student's learning experience. Understanding that material in schools and universities is delivered primarily in written format, and in lecture based scenarios I make other options available for the student - for example a 'devil's advocate' scenario for a student in studying Philosophy, and an interview setup for a Business Environment English student. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Raul: I have been teaching private classes for more than five years. Since my career is electronic and electrical engineering I have mainly focused my classes on science topics. However I have taught language classes as well, for example English as a foreign language. I really enjoy teaching and I think that this fact is reflected in my students satisfaction. I consider that I have good communications skills and an outgoing personality. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught private classes since I was eighteen years old. Maths, phisycs chemistry are the main courses that I have taught. However, other subjects such as English, Social Science, History have come across during my experience as a tutor. Satisfaction among my former students is total. |
Tutoring Approach: I ike to know everything about my student in my first meeting and afterwards design a working plan in order to reinforce the weakest points of my tutee. This plan usually includes student homework, further study in the darkest points covered in his/her daily classes and further materials exercises. A relaxed environment combined with an efficient use of the time are my basic principles while teaching. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Eleanor: I am 26 years old and am looking to start tutoring again after a break. I am applying for my PGDE and would welcome the opportunity to reacquaint myself with tutoring. I am familiar with the Standard Grade and Higher syllabus for Biology and Maths and find tutoring both interesting and rewarding. I am patient and enjoy working with young people as well as being enthusiastic about learning. |
Teaching Experience: I have extensive experience in tutoring Biology (Standard Grade/Higher/University) and Maths (Standard Grade), both on a one-to-one basis and to large groups. Throughout my university career I tutored school pupils in the evenings and in my Senior Honours year I helped out in Biology practical classes. In addition to this I have been involved in training adults in literacy and numeracy through my work for a local charity. |
Tutoring Approach: My tutoring centres very much upon the tutees needs. I tend to help the tutee focus on any areas (s)he is having difficulty with, and if required, revising stronger areas. In the past I have helped tutees catch up on work after being out of school due to illness, and help struggling students improve their grades vastly. I am an excellent motivator and have a good understanding of the barriers which may prevent pupils learning in school. |

View Miles's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Miles: My name is Miles Smith and I am 30 years old. I have worked as a teacher since graduating from the University of Warwick in 1999 with a degree in History. At the end of university I studied English Language Teaching in Spain through Oxford House College, where I received my TESOL Certificate, before heading to South Korea. I spent several years in East Asia, principally in Taiwan, where I worked as a teacher of young and very young learners (using English as the medium to teach all curriculum subjects), and then later specifically teaching adults at an exam preparation school. During this time, I gained considerable experience as a teacher trainer as well. Currently, I am doing my MA in ELT and Applied Linguistics through King's College in London. I will be based in Norwich from the beginning of September. |
Teaching Experience: I am a qualified English Language Instructor with 9 years experience teaching English both in the UK and also overseas. I have worked with a wide variety of age groups, from very young children to adults and provided one-to-one tuition for both children and adults, in both a general way and also academically for entry to university. My skills are mainly related to language, and how children or adults can access texts and discourse that is complicated for them. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to tutoring is guided by a more general philosophy related to teaching, which is that lessons and instruction need to be adapted according to the needs of those learning. I believe in being well-prepared, but also in being flexible and creative, and helping my students help themselves. I think that a voice of encouragement is very important, but that equally important is realism and practical advice. I tutor intensively, and do not believe in wasting time, or leaving a session without feeling as though something has been accomplished or achieved. Saying this, I am far from being a stern master. I would consider myself open, relaxed, confident and engaging as a teacher, as well as being knowledgeable about my particular disciplines. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Peter: I am a 24 old German, living in Birmingham for since October 2008. In 2004 I graduated from "Grosse Stadtschule Rostock", Germany achieving an average grade of 2,1 in my Abitur (A-Level equivalent). My majors were English and German. After my civilian service I studied "Popular Music and Media Management" at the University of Paderborn, Germany, which I will complete this term with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Furthermore I had piano lessons for 10 years and am playing the bass guitar for 6 years. I am also a autodidact in rhythm guitar and able to teach the basic concepts. |
Teaching Experience: Since studying at an internationally accredited university enables you to get to know people from around the world, I came in contact with a lot of students whose mother tongue was not German. |
Tutoring Approach: Learning a foreign language and about a different culture can be a lot of fun. Although some rules, especially grammar, have to be learned by heart. I can offer you German classes with a lot of real life examples, such as music, films, literature, TV shows and magazines. It is possible to learn about German politics and the German party systems through a vivid conversation which does not only enables you to understand German politics and history, but also upgrades your conversational skills. Having played in several bands enables me to teach a real-live approach to music and the instrument. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Kerry: I am currently a student of Combined Modern Languages (German and Spanish) at the University of Portsmouth, though I am originally from Birmingham. I am in my second year of study, having been learning German almost nine years and Spanish for two. I also attended King Edwards Grammar school up to GCSE level after passing my 11+, and aim to take a PGCE after I graduate to qualify as a secondary school/sixth form level teacher. I am also a current member of my local St. John Ambulance within my University. |
Teaching Experience: Previously I have worked for one year in a primary school in a Year 5 classroom (ages 9-10) part-time, assisting in English, Maths, Science and Religious Studies teaching. After this I worked once a week as a teaching assistant in a GCSE German class, focusing mainly on the speaking and grammar sections of the exam by working with small groups of students outside of the main classroom. I have also worked with younger children up to 5 years old. I am not fully qualified as a teacher, but have however been CRB checked and have previously done German tutoring within secondary schools. |
Tutoring Approach: I think it is very important to assess the individual needs of a tutee and get to know them well. I think having someone available as a constant for help outside of the official classroom is a great help. I can work with either individuals or with small groups in 'study sessions'. |
