About Stephanie:
I am an enthusiastic individual who puts every possible effort into everything I do. Being positive and encouraging provides the best possible outcome in almost every situation, therefore I am usually optimistic. I have several interests, including swimming, tennis, football and other sports. I like to read, watch television, socialise and work hard. I am an outgoing, helpful and positive individual.

Teaching Experience:

I am currently embarking on a Post-graduate Certificate of Education which will begin in September, where I will be focusing on becoming a science teacher in secondary schools and colleges. Previous to this I have spent 18 months in China where I taught English as a foreign language in several different settings. This taught me about management within the classroom and in planning. It also gave me the confidence to teach appropriately and it provided me with experience at teaching English to different age groups. Whilst studying for my BSc Hons Biology and University I produced an interactive CD-Rom for GCSE students and presented it to the class as a teacher. I have also spent time with children under examination conditions as an exam invigilator. I have completed my Students Associates Scheme Level 2 in a primary school too. This allowed me to observe several different situations within a school and I learnt a lot from them.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a laid back but encouraging approach to tutoring. I feel that a relaxed learning environment, where topics are made interesting and fun for the student create a better learning environment and encourage progression for the students. I create a steady work load for the students so that the progress at a steady level, to try to reduce pressure. I create extensive lesson plans so that both the student and I can gain the most from the tutoring session. I feel that providing the best tutoring is about both the teacher and the student progressing together to provide the best learning environment for the student.

About Kris:
I have been teaching and tutoring for over 5 years in an inner London school and have a wide variety of extra curricular activities to my experience, including sports, drama and school trips. I believe that students can achieve their potential through continous encouragement and praise whether this be in the classroom or during tutoring sessions.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching in an inner London school for the last 5 years and before that at a inner London sixth form college. I have been graded as a Outstanding teacher during the last two years and enjoy teaching History to students between the ages of 11-19. I have also had experience in tutoring students in Maths, English and Science and am aware of the National Curriculum requirements in these subjects, as well as GCSE specifications due to my role as a form tutor having taken the same form through Years 7-10. I am also an Edexcel Examiner and for the last two years have been marking exam papers on line for Edexcel.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe tutoring should be suited to individual needs of the student so no two tutoring sessions are the same. I do this by engaging students in a variety of activities during tutoring sessions, not just using textbooks and writing. A student needs to be engaged during tutoring and enjoy the benefits of one to one session work and this can be done in a number of ways- whether it be by using mini whiteboards, quizzes or kinesthetic activities. I have been successful in mentoring and tutoring students privately and during school with students who are under achievers.

About Anna:
Hello,

I am a New Zealander who is currently working as a Supply Teacher in the Brighton. I am a fully qualified teacher who has experience in the class room.
I love to teach!

Teaching Experience:

Supply Teacher Brighton - Present
Key Stage 1 and 2 Primary School teacher (3 Years Experience)

Tutoring Approach:

I like to find out about the child I am teaching, what interests them, what do they find fun, what is their learning style and what motivates them to learn. Often children who are struggling at school need an extra boost in a one on one environment. I create an environment where learning is fun and it is is o.k to make mistakes.
To begin with I find out what the child does know. Often children need to be boosted with this knowledge to regain their confidence. Once this has been established we can together set goals that are achievable and attainable.

About Emily:
I completed my A levels in 2004 and gained 4 A grades (English Literature, History, Spanish, General Studies and AS level in Mathematics with Mechanics) then went on to Edinburgh university where I recently graduated with a first in English Literature and Spanish. The 4 year course at Edinburgh also allows you to study an extra course in the first two years and I chose to study European History. I'm planning to go off roaming around the world later this year, possibly to teach English as a foreign language, but need to earn some money first...

Teaching Experience:

- I tutored year 11 students for their spanish GCSEs during my second year of university.
- When I spent the the third year of my degree abroad in Spain I taught English to foreign students.
- I have spent long periods of time helping out in primary schools - my mum teaches 5-6 year olds and I am currently spending several days each term helping out with her class - hearing readers, helping with practical maths etc.
Whilst I'm aware that my experience is comparatively limited, I believe I make a good tutor as I am an excellent communicator, I'm enthusiastic, resourceful and able to motivate students. I'm also friendly and warm and take pride in supporting and encouraging students.

Tutoring Approach:

My main experience is within language teaching and I approach this in a similar way to the way in which I was taught Spanish and French. I tend to focus on the separate areas of reading, writing, speaking, listening (where possible) and grammar but try and make my lessons varied and interesting, using multiple resources ie foreign language newspapers, literature in the target language, watching news bulletins, using the internet etc. I think it is essential to maintain this mix to keep a student interested. I also think that (informal) testing is important as it focuses the student's attention but in general my approach is quite relaxed so my students feel at ease.

About Janet:
I am a highly qualified and experienced teacher who has also successfully tutored my own children in science, both at GCSE and A Level. Both children achieved A* at GCSE (in all three sciences) and Grade A in biology at A Level. My PhD encompassed tumour and cell biology, laser physics, biochemistry and colour chemistry, and I subsequently worked in these fields as a Research Fellow for 10 years. I also have a practical background in Microbiology. I have tutored undergraduates and been a supervisor to PhD students.

Teaching Experience:

I have 16 years experience of successfully teaching all three sciences at KS3 and GCSE, and biology at A Level, in a Local Authority secondary school. I teach the science component of the curriculum to our Gifted and Talented students, who routinely achieve grade A's and B's. All my A Level students have achieved either a grade A or B.
During OFSTED inspections I have been rated as a 'good' teacher, and have recently been rated as 'outstanding'.

Tutoring Approach:

I adapt my methods of tutoring to suit the learning styles of my students, and always produce an individual learning plan at the start of my tutoring sessions so that I can identify any special weaknesses that need to be addressed.

About Stephen:
During my studies at University College London, I've been exposed to a diverse range of subject matters in both Earth Sciences and Zoology. My degree was primarily in Palaeobiology, and covered aspects such as Invertebrate and Vertebrate Palaeontology, Genetics, Botany, Micropalaeontology and Molecular Biology. I have a keen interest in the sciences, specifically in vertebrate evolution and biogeography. Having studied at UCL for four years, my abilities in problem solving, analytical skills, organisation, time management and communication has naturally progressed beyond my previous levels reached at college. My analytical ability, along with practical ability has also been honed as a result of strong scientific study, which has been supplemented with numerous field and lab experiences.

In the realm of Palaeobiology, I developed a particular interest in using phylogenetic trees to decipher past and present biogeographical patterns. I am particularly interested in vertebrate evolution and biodiversity and this was well supplemented by numerous courses such as Animal Form and Function, Palaeontology, Mammalian Evolution and Advanced Palaeontological Analytical Techniques. I was also given the opportunity to work under Dr. Paul Upchurch (UCL, former Cambridge) in a study of the Mesozoic group of flying vertebrates, the Pterosaurs. This study was highly successful, and is now being prepared for publication in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society. My strong interest in vertebrate groups ranges from Pterosaurs, to early Amniotes and to primates. Paleoecology is another field that carries a particular interest, specifically in relation to biogeography and ecological niche partitioning. This has been supported by both conventional zoological studies and from evolutionary genetics.

Teaching Experience:

I have also completed 7 months of a PhD/Teaching Assistant post at the University of Aberdeen. The involved the training of MA students in using Excel for scientific databases, and it's application in providing visual aids for presentations. I was also heavily involved in training the students in producing power point presentations, to convey effective scientific themes to the public. The students were also directly assessed by myself, and trained in producing reports and essays of a good enough standard to be published.

Tutoring Approach:

As my degree was primarily a multi disciplinary subject, my approach to teaching very much follows this structure. I believe in teaching certain subjects through the point of many examples, in different disciplines. This allows the student to grasp the connectivity between the sciences, and the true reality of research in the modern world, which is almost now entirely geared towards multi disciplinary studies. As I attended a world class institution such as UCL, many of the lecturer styles throughout my degree has heavily influenced my ability to teach. I now approach teaching in the manner of allowing the student to consider all alternatives to different theories and methods, and then proceed to guide them in understanding why certain theories/hypotheses are held in higher regard than others.
