| About Sofia: I am currently experienced in Science, English and History predominantly, and am fluent in 3 languages, with a basic knowledge of some European languages. I have also been involved in setting up a Limited Company which aims to provide academic resources to students in Higher Education (at University level). |
Teaching Experience: I have 2 years experience, delivering 1-2-1 tuition to students ranging across KS1-4, and ages 6-16, teaching mostly Science to GCSE Level, Maths to KS3 and English + History + ICT to A Level. For those interested in Business Studies, or how to set up your own business, I can offer lessons on these topics as well, including topics on where to go to get your funding, and how to market yourself effectively (including networking) etc. I have also taught SEN children (with dyslexia and autism), up to KS2, covering English and Mathematics with these students. Below is a more complete and comprehensive list of subjects which I am able to teach. All subjects can be taught from primary level, up to the level specified, and can also be taught as Adult Learning classes - unless otherwise stated. Biology - A Level Business Related - All Chemistry - GCSE Citizenship - All Combined Science - GCSE Computer Studies/ICT - A Level Craft and Design - 11-14 Drama - GCSE Earth Science - GCSE English - A Level English (Foreign Language) - All Entrance Exams - GCSE Film Studies - A Level French - 11-14 Genealogy - 11-14 Geography - GCSE German - 11-14 History - A Level Life Science - All Maths - 11-14 Physics - GCSE Politics - All Psychology - A Level Reading and Writing Skills - All Religious Studies - A Level Sociology - GCSE Special Needs - GCSE Urdu - 11-14 Web Design - GCSE Prices for all subjects are as follows (all per hour): Primary - 10 11-14 - 12 GCSE - 14 A Level - 14 University - 16 Adults - 18 |
Tutoring Approach: I always aim to follow the National Curriculum, without making each lesson feel like more schoolwork. We can approach lessons in different ways. i.e. We can do mini-projects which incorporate a range of subjects to enhance your overall learning experience, while improving skills such as organisation, essay-writing, note-taking, observation etc. OR We can have set lessons focusing on topics mentioned by the student, that need improving. For example, analysis of a book/text in English, improving History knowledge etc. Generally the first hour for every student is where we develop a working plan that works for both parties, and so everyone knows what to expect. I am very laid back and flexible about things, so if there's ever a need to deviate from the plan, then that's not a problem. I'm also very open to questions. One-to-one tuition is all about being able to talk to your tutor and ask the questions you may not be able to in school. Therefore, lessons are always informal, and as long as we get our set work done, we can have a chat about anything else that may be concerning you in school/college/work or life! As a final note, after evaluating each students specific needs, we will agree on the number of hours we will work together, and what pattern they will follow. For example: Normally people opt for 1hr per week Closer to exams you can have a series of intensive lessons - i.e. 2-3hrs per week all at once or spaced out over 3 days. Some people need a quick crash course to prepare them for an assessment, or to complete an assignment that they need help with. In these instances we can develop an intensive program ranging from 1 full day to Xhr(s) per day leading up to your deadline. I understand this may all seem very long-winded, but hopefully you can understand my working ethos and will want to enquire further to see what I can do for you. I look forward to hearing from you soon. R.E. A CRB check - This will hopefully be forthcoming soon as I am awaiting a response from the company to be handling the check. |

View Stephen's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Stephen: I am currently an English teacher in the East End of Glasgow at Lochend High School where I successfully oversee the learning of a wide variety of young people from S1 to S6. At Bannerman High School, I achieved straight A's across six Highers and three Advanced Highers. In 2006, I graduated from Glasgow University with a MA Joint Honours History and English Literature (first class). Through this education, I have developed excellent study skills and effective communication techniques. As a volunteer youth worker, I am friendly, approachable and go out of my way to be as helpful as possible. I've worked with young people from many different backgrounds, whether attending Madras College in St Andrews or hanging out in Bargeddie, just outside Glasgow. I really enjoy reading, discussing ideas and writing short pieces, particularly poetry. |
Teaching Experience: In Lochend, I have created numerous, pupil-centred resources to make learning more interesting and informative. I've also set and assessed Standard Grade and National Qualification test papers. At Jordanhill teacher training college, I worked for ten weeks in Taylor High and another eight weeks in Lochend. I studied the most highly-regarded education practices and was tutored by an official SQA marker. I also worked with an organisation called GOALS, which worked across schools in the West of Scotland to promote University and help prepare pupils for the transition to life as students. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe tutors must work together closely with the tutee to identify their individual targets, plan a pathway to reach their goals and tackle the challenges on route. This involves nurturing the creative flair and particular style of the tutee, within the rules of standard English writing. Readers must be trained to better explore, analyse and evaluate the texts to move understanding beyond the superficial. Tutors should also provide high-quality feedback on tutee's work, which praises the strengths and sets-out clear strategies for further improvement. Finally, a tutee needs a comfortable atmosphere for learning and encouragement to keep going! |

View Lauren's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Lauren: I am very patient and good with people of all ages. I achieved very high grades in my GCSEs (4A*s and 6As) and A Levels (3As and a B). I live opposite Manchester Grammar School, which would be very useful if I were to tutor somebody from this school, as travel for the pupil would be very easy. |
Teaching Experience: Tutoring and mentoring troubled and struggling children aged between 13-17 at an underprivileged school in Slough, helping them not only with their school subjects, but with decisions about their futures such as subjects to take and just generally keeping them out of trouble. |
Tutoring Approach: I consult with the parents beforehand to see how they would prefer I went about tutoring their child, but generally I like to build up a rapour with the child so that they feel what I am teaching or helping them with applies to them and so that they feel comfortable and willing to learn from me. I am young which helps with this, as the pupils do not feel as though they are being tutored by someone who does not or cannot understand them. I am kind and patient but also firm and disciplined. After finding out the topics needed to be covered, I assign parts of these, or the topics as a whole to a session and go through it so that it is easy to understand, before working through examples with the student and then overseeing and helping them to work through them by theirselves until they feel comfortable with the content. |

I believe its very important for children to have a knowledge of a modern language no matter how little. I am dedicated and reliable in everything I do and believe in using varied teaching techniques to aid learning. I am also very liberal and flexible in my teaching. I have taught in various schools as part of my PGCE as well as having tutored a 4year old, 16 year old, adult groups in business and even an 89 year old. I worked as a foreign language assistant in France in 2004 where I taught English. |

I am familiar with KS2/KS3/GCSE and Level syllabus and I am willing to use these solely or incorporate them into my teaching. I have also one to one experience with pupils of all ages and also adults. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that teaching in small groups/individually is the most effective way to learn. Obviously I will asses the students needs and plan accordingly but I am also willing to take requests of lesson content. I use a variety of resources and games to aid remembering grammar and vocabulary and also incorporate the four skills of languages (reading, writing, listening and speaking) into each of my lesson. Each lesson I teach is carefully planned out and flows in a way to capture the students attention at all times and prevent distractions or boredom. |

I have a PGCE in citizenship and have also taught this to secondary level including the following subjects: history, geography, sociology, PSHE, business studies and English. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach is centred around the students needs, working with the pupil and tailoring my tutoring and teaching methods around the needs of the student. I am very good at differentiating work and explaining clearly. My strengths are in guiding the student and facilitating them in their learning. I like to create a positive and challenging atmosphere where my students feel confident and engaged with what they are doing. Also I like my students to feel confident in my abilities so they feel secure and feel confident to ask if unsure of anything. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Alan: I recently graduated from Heriot Watt with a Masters degree in Physics. I studied both Chemistry and Biology during my time at university, alongside my main subjects of Physics and Maths. I am planning on returning to university next year to get my PGDE (teaching qualification). |
Teaching Experience: I have no formal teaching/tutoring experience, but over the last few years I have spent a lot of time assisting many of my classmates with their studies. I have a very good understanding of my subject and have had plenty of practice explaining complicated ideas in an easily digestible manner. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that a deep understanding of a subject is incredibly beneficial to students, and is ultimately the best way to get a better grade, however I also acknowledge that practicing likely exam questions can be a very effective way of improving marks. |

View Daniel's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Daniel: I originally come from Coalville, in Leicestershire. When I was 12, I moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, USA for 5 years, during which I travelled around most of the country with my parents, visiting many historical sites. I love to travel, so since then I have been to Italy and southern Africa. I was always a good student, and in my spare time I enjoy reading, playing sport and video games. |
Teaching Experience: I have no formal teaching experience, but I've been giving paid guided tours of York for a private company for just over a year. This has greatly enhanced my communication skills. I'm a recent graduate of the University of York, where I got a BA in Archaeology. During this course I gave several assessed formal and informal presentations to a range of different audiences. |
Tutoring Approach: I am an enthusiastic person with recent experience of education. I try to make my guided tours fun and educational, so that's the approach I would bring to tutoring. I have an eye for detail as well, which would be good for double-checking work. I am also good at explaining things. My chosen subjects that I would like to tutor are History, Geography, French and English, because I was good at these subjects at school and because I enjoy them. |
