About Susan:
I am nearly sixty years of age. I have retired early due to ill health. I enjoy private tuition and find it rewarding to follow through with a pupil. Until four years ago, I tutored on a regular basis and became friends with many of the families, being recommended to others. I had to stop doing it when I took on my last position as I found I couldn't continue to make the time for both. I have a grown up family and grandchildren as well. I am not yet ready to retire from work properly and would welcome the chance to teach again.

Teaching Experience:

My last post was teaching KS3 Maths and History at a PRU. A very demanding job!

Before that, I worked as a supply teacher and private tutor since qualifying as a Special Needs Lecturer in 1995.

Tutoring Approach:

When teaching KS1 & 2, I usually find that pupils have, for various reasons, missed a chunk of the curriculum. I start by finding out what is known and then producing a plan which is discussed with both parents and pupil and agreed upon. I set a reasonable amount of homework as this lets the pupil and parents express a commitment.

When prepping for exams. I use old papers and give the pupil a good taste of what to expect. I encourage all the way. I set mock exams which are timed to give confidence.

About Andrew:
Hi,

My name is Andrew and I am a fully qualified primary teacher with a B.Ed (HONS) from Lancaster University. I achieved qualified teacher status in 1992 and my most recent police records check was successfully undertaken within the past three months.

Andrew

About Belen:
I am a native Spanish teacher, University qualified, with Spanish (DELE) and English (PGCE) postgraduate qualifications to teach Spanish as a foreign language. I have two years experience teaching Spanish to English native speakers.

Teaching Experience:

I have two years of experience as a Spanish teacher to foreigners. I started teaching at several language schools in Spain and after a year I went to England to continue my professional career in secondary schools. My teaching experience in England was developed as part of the Professional Graduate Certificate of Education, Secondary, Modern Foreign Languages, at St Martin's College (Carlisle, Cumbria). During the year I was teaching in Spain I also attended several training courses for Spanish teachers organised by the Cervantes Institute where I obtained, among other things, the Diploma in Methodology and Didactics of Spanish as a Foreign Language.

During the year I spent in England I was very well trained in how to teach my language to English native speakers. At St Martin's College I was specially trained to teach Spanish entirely in the target language. After a year of teaching practice in several English secondary schools I can say that the method used really works because most of my students showed a significant improvement. This method, based on a highly communicative approach, showed to be very successful to motivate the students as it not only created their need to communicate in the classroom but also gave them the necessary tools to do so only in Spanish. I have also been trained in how to plan and teach a Spanish lesson, from the long term schemes of work and detailed lesson plans for every lesson to the own elaboration of all the learning materials incorporating the use of new technology in the classroom, such as Power Point and the interactive WhiteBoard.

Tutoring Approach:

I offer private Spanish lessons, all levels, where you will learn at your own pace, with a timetable as flexible as you want, in a communicative and funny way and communicating only in Spanish since the very first day if you want.

Any certifying documentation to confirm the information below can be provided upon request.

Teaching Experience:

Students aged 11 and 13 sitting the GCE Intenational O' Level examinations.
2) Jan 1998 - Jul 2001, Islamic studies teacher, Haydari Madressah, Nairobi, Kenya.
Islamic studies teacher at a night school in Nairobi, Kenya teaching 8 year old students. Class of 22 students.
3) Sep 2001 - Jun 2006, Belgrave School, Leicester, UK.
Subjects taught there were Mathematics, English Language and English Literature. Class of 10 students.
4) Sep 2001 - 2006, Anysubject Ltd. private tutoring agency, Stamford, UK.
I thereafter joined Anysubject Ltd. and worked with them between 2001 and 2006. This involved giving private tuition to GCSE students at their homes. I had clients in Leicester, Southampton, Cardiff and Bedford. During this time I taught Science in addition to other subjects mentioned above.
5) Aug 2007 - present, Alpha tutors Ltd. and Personal tutors Ltd, Cheshire, UK.

Tutoring Approach:

I offer just one hour introductory session initially to get to know the student and parent/guardian. This is an opportunity for you to ask questions about me, for me to provide you with my references and qualification details and for me to take the student through a few guide questions to recognise the level at which they are. I can then judge, according to your expectations, how many lessons and what duration per week/fortnight the student will require to reach that expectation. Eg. from General level to Credit level at Standard grade. Once completed you can then have a think over the lesson and engage in a conversation with your child if they feel confident enough to have me as their tutor and mentor. Once this is settled we can go ahead with further tuition.

About Rose:
I studied French at University College London, graduating in 2003, with a 2:1 class degree. I was awarded a distinction in Spoken French. I have travelled extensively in France and lived in Toulouse for a year, 2001 - 2002. Since my first holiday in France when I was 6 years old I have loved the language, the country and its culture. This enthusiasm always comes across when I teach, I can often win over even the most reluctant of French pupils!

Teaching Experience:

I have been a private tutor in French in Edinburgh for just over a year; on average, during the academic year, teaching 8 - 10 students one-to-one at any one time. Experienced in all levels of tuition: Primary, GSCE, A-Level, Standards, Highers and Advanced Highers. I have also taught a number of adults during this time. Lesson times vary from one hour to an hour and a half depending on the student's requirements. Feedback has been very positive, most of my work comes from recommendations from existing students. Academic improvements in student's work are guaranteed as is a growth in their self-confidence.

Tutoring Approach:

I go with a professional yet informal approach. Especially with school students who have fallen behind in their French and whose confidence is low, I believe it is important to gain their interest and trust in order to efficiently improve their work. I follow curriculam requirements closely in order to effectively prepare them for exam questions but tailor exercises to their age and interests. I balance the work we do together with plenty of independent work for them to build their confidence outwith of working with a tutor. I use the first lesson to gauge the student's level, ask them which particular things they struggle with and from this map out subsequent lesson plans. I balance written, reading, listening and conversational exercises firmly in the believe that overall improvement requires competencies in all areas as they all effect each other: listening will improve your speaking and reading your writing and so on. Patience, professionalism and a sense of humour are vital in my work as a tutor.

About Irina:
Hello, my name is Irina. I am 25 and a student at Coventry University, following the European Engineering Studies I am expecting the Bachelor with Honnors in Engineering by the summer next year.

I have been offering tutoring since 2000 giving private lessons as well as teaching small groups. Most of my students were school students of all ages.

About Helen:
I currently work for a national work-based learning provider, supporting students with Maths and English from Entry Level 2 to Level 2. I enjoy helping people realise their full potential and become more confident when it comes to learning, and feel I have a wealth of experience in this area. I am passionate about meeting people from different backgrounds and cultures and experiencing new things both through my job, my degree discipline and through travelling to different continents and living abroad for extended periods of time.

Teaching Experience:

I have worked abroad in Turkey for one year and in the UK for 4 years at a top educational institute delivering ESOL, Literacy and Numeracy courses, incorporating e-learning and teaching computer literacy. I have worked with an age of ranges from five years upwards, and feel am an excellent communicator at all levels. I have prepared students for entrance exams (inclding 11+) and SATs. I also have experience of delivering the Life in the UK Test and offer specialist tuition in this area (ESOL with Citizenship), working with speakers of Arabic, Chinese, Urdu, Farsi and a whole host of European languages.

Tutoring Approach:

When I first meet with learners I do so on a very informal basis to help me determine their current levels of knowledge/ability and do an Initial Assessment (usually paper based except for Speaking and Listening areas) with them. I then discuss their goals and how they feel they are able to learn best. I then tailor a personal learning plan specifically to them incorporating milestones to be achieved in their preferred learning style and within their chosen timescale.

About Nyein:
I have recently (June 2007) been qualified to graduate with BSc (Hons) Physics with Space Science degree from University College London (UCL). I will be continuing with my studies for Master's level in Applied Mathematics or Theoretical Physics and aim to follow research and teaching career. I am fluent in English, Burmese and Japanese and I also have computer programming skills. I am patient, which is most important in teaching, relaxed, flexible and friendly.

Teaching Experience:

Most of my teaching experience come from helping fellow students, teaching an adult person on a foundation course and through dropping into a few peer-assisted learning (PAL) sessions.

Tutoring Approach:

My approaching to teaching is to make students learn through examples. In doing so, students will not only gain problem-solving skills and understand the theories better, but also will be well-prepared for the exams at the same time. I believe it is very efficient way to learn and most suitable for subjects like Mathematics and Physics which you cannot remember everything but must try to understand underlying principles and must be able to apply them in different contexts. However, different students have different tastes to different teachings and I am therefore prepared to be adapt the way the student wants me to.

About Patrick:
I am a very optimistic and enthusiastic person with a lot of interest in what I can learn from people of different backgrounds and cultures- I think this helps to inform me as a person and assists me as a teacher and human being. I love to travel, whether this is for a short time or long time and I have ambitions to see many more places before it's too late.
I recently returned to Scotland as I will be marrying my fiancee next year, so I am here for the long haul!

Teaching Experience:

6 years ago I completed a TEFL Taster course at Heriott-Watt University in Edinburgh, and within 8 months I was boarding a plane bound for Tokyo, Japan, where I worked for Nova Group, which was at that time the largest language school in Japan. I taught a wide range of individuals there, from very young children (age 3-12) to retired adults. I taught on a one-to-one basis and I have experience of teaching TOEIC and TOEFL from this time. I also taught small group classes (maximum of 4 students) from beginner level to intermediate and then advanced.

I returned to Europe after 12 months in Japan and subsequently completed my Cambridge CELTA in June 2006 at International House in Seville, Spain, where I gained a B-Pass. My most recent job was in Lisbon, Portugal, where I worked for Cambridge School from September 2007 to September 2008. At Cambridge I taught larger group classes ranging in ages from 9-90 and I had the opportunity to teach First Certificate classes, taking advanced English speakers to new levels of aptitude, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I also taught professional people on a one-to-basis and as a result I have a lot of experience of techniques and materials which can be used to improve individuals' grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, both within and outwith traditional curriculums.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a believer in the idea that to teach is to learn, and I feel that my major strength is that I can listen to my students and identify their needs very quickly. I think it is possible to accommodate the needs of the student and the objectives of the lesson quite smoothly and that is usually my objective as a teacher/tutor.
I feel that there are possibilities for learning in every context and environment, no matter how mundane or abstract it may seem and I thrive on situations where my initiative, and that of the student, is necessary. I also feel that traditional textbook style teaching can constantly be reformed and improved upon, in light of new and more relevant contexts.
With my experience of set curriculums and ad-hoc style lessons, I feel I can meet your needs as a student of English.
