View Aaron's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Aaron: I am primarily a music tutor offering help and support in all areas including instrument tuition for guitar, piano and drum-kit as well as classical and jazz theory. I am also qualified in a number of other subjects, the competitive rates of which are on my profile. I am a freindly, patient teacher and being 22 I have only recently left full-time education and so can empathise fully with students in all levels of education. |
Teaching Experience: I began teaching instrumental lessons at the age of 17 and have been widening the styles and ability levels that I am able to teach in the last 5 years. In the last year I have also begaun running workshops in schools in the subjects of media studies, music, drama and film studies. I have a BA Music and have also received traing in the Yamaha Method. |
Tutoring Approach: I beleive that teaching the syllabus is incredibly important for subjects which require exams and coursework, particualrly academic subjects. When I teach music I encourage the student to consider his/her strengths and weaknesses and tailor a method of teaching designed to work alongside the student which may or may not be similar to conventional classical approaches, depending on the needs of the student. Although my approachs to teaching different subjects vary, the objective is to help the student acheive their goal in a freindly, supportive and encouraging environment. This may be acheiving an A in GCSE maths, attainign grade 5 piano or simply to further the students own understanding of the subject. If the student has a clear idea of what it is they want to acheive, I will help them realise that. |

| About Eleanor: I am 26 years old and am looking to start tutoring again after a break. I am applying for my PGDE and would welcome the opportunity to reacquaint myself with tutoring. I am familiar with the Standard Grade and Higher syllabus for Biology and Maths and find tutoring both interesting and rewarding. I am patient and enjoy working with young people as well as being enthusiastic about learning. |
Teaching Experience: I have extensive experience in tutoring Biology (Standard Grade/Higher/University) and Maths (Standard Grade), both on a one-to-one basis and to large groups. Throughout my university career I tutored school pupils in the evenings and in my Senior Honours year I helped out in Biology practical classes. In addition to this I have been involved in training adults in literacy and numeracy through my work for a local charity. |
Tutoring Approach: My tutoring centres very much upon the tutees needs. I tend to help the tutee focus on any areas (s)he is having difficulty with, and if required, revising stronger areas. In the past I have helped tutees catch up on work after being out of school due to illness, and help struggling students improve their grades vastly. I am an excellent motivator and have a good understanding of the barriers which may prevent pupils learning in school. |

View Aurélie's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Aurélie: I am French and English has always been my favourite subject at school. After studying English for two years at the Lyons University, I decided to move to Montreal to study Translation. I really enjoyed this bilingual city and my life there but after having graduated, I moved back to Europe because I really wanted to live in the UK and to discover the British culture. So I am currently living in Leeds and trying to begin my career as a freelance translator. I love arts especially music and cinema, I have played the saxophone for 13 years and I like to subtitle movies from English to French. I am also thinking about doing distance learning courses in order to have a qualification to teach French as a Foreign Language. |
Teaching Experience: When I was living in Lyons, I used to give private English lessons to several teenagers and adults. In Montreal, I taught French to 2 English-speaking people and also had conversation classes English/French. I used to be a Music Conductor for a Junior Orchestra so I am also quite used to work with children. |
Tutoring Approach: I think the most important thing is to make the lesson interesting for both of us. Especially with children, I like to teach French in a fun way, through songs, movies or cartoons and telling stories. But I also think that Grammar is really an important point in the French language and you have to learn it to understand the basis of French. Depending on what you want, I am ready to teach you the French language and the French culture through exercises, conversation and the best of my knowledge! |

| About Pratigya: I am a currently doing my PhD in Immunology at Cardiff University school of Medicine. I graduate with BSc hons degree in Biomedical science at the University of Durham. I graduated with A grades in Biology and Chemistry A levels and a B in Physics A level, and also student Matsh upt o AS level. In my GCSE's I achieved 7 A grades, and 3 B's. Bubbly by nature, I believe that education isn't just about getting a certificate but about learning. I am self motivated, reliable and hard working. Currently I am working on a research project looking into the molecular mechanism played by a polymorphism in the gene PTPN22 in predisposing to autoimmune diseases such as Diabetes type 1, Rheumatoid rthritis and SLE. |
Teaching Experience: Currently I am supervising a 4th yr Medical student in his laboratory project for the past 2 months. I also attended a training course as a teaching associate in secondary science. I have given private tuitions to secondary school students for the 3 years of my undergraduate degree as STARS mentor. I have also volunteered as a associate teacher at a primary school for a year.I have succesfully tutored my younger brother through his GCSE's, A levels and 1st year university. I have also volunteered as science and english teacher for 2 months at a time, few time in secondary schools in Nepal. |
Tutoring Approach: Studying should not be a burden but it is an active learning process therefore there needs to be a balance between the two. There is an approach to everything, hence knowing sylabus inside out doesn't necessarily mean good marks in exams. Exam technique is very important, and hence understanding and confidence is essential.I like the students to be able to understand what they learn, to see the logic of what they have to learn, and hence be able to apply their learning. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Anastasis: I have currently been accepted for admission to the part-time Master of Science in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages course at Queen's University Belfast commencing in the academic year 2008/09. Prior to this, I attended Aristotle University of Thessaloniki where I undertook a degree in English Language and Literature. During my studies I successfully attended subjects such as Methodology of Teaching Modern Languages, Teaching Theory & Practice, Strategies of Language Learning & Communication, Psycholinguistics, Vocabulary Teaching & Acquisition, Mother Tongue Acquisition, Current Communicative Approaches and many others. I believe that I am well-suited to a career in TEFL as I hold the required qualifications and I am genuinely interested in working in this field. I have just moved to Belfast so as to pursue my studies on an academic level and enhance my ability to work as a foreign language teacher in the UK |
Teaching Experience: I had been working as a free-lance English home tutor during my academic studies. I have professional experience in teaching General English to adults, young learners, aged 8-14, and some Business English. I am fully familiar with one-to-one as well as group lessons. Most of the lessons were exam-oriented as I was employed to prepare students for Cambridge examinations such as YLE, KET, PET and FCE. |
Tutoring Approach: First of all, the lessons are designed to comply with learners' needs and preferences, objectives and goals, level and abilities. Individual learning styles are to be acknowledged and accommodated in teaching. Nevertheless, my approach to tutoring emphasizes the so-called communicative competence; the activities and tasks carried out as well as the materials used focus on real communication for a real purpose. Language is viewed and therefore taught as a whole, integrating all four skills in the syllabus. Structural activities are combined with functional ones, accurate listening becomes a prerequisite for fluent speech, revision and tests are an essential part of my lessons, students are encouraged to accept errors as a part of the learning process. I always follow a preplanned lesson script; yet, I always look for teachable moments to occur. |

Teaching Experience: In 2004, just before I began my undergraduate studies in Leeds, I worked for a time as a teacher at a school in Bangalore, India. Also, during my time studying at Leeds Trinity and All Saints College, where I obtained my University of Leeds degree, I worked as a 'Student Ambassador.' Part of my work was to look after parties from local secondary schools who came to take part in our 'Higher Education Experience Days.' These were designed to inform and encourage school age students about the transition to higher education and undergraduate study. |
Tutoring Approach: My aim is to come across as easy going and approachable to my students, but at the same time to encourage them to be constantly pushing the boundaries of their skills and knowledge. Also, one of my main charactersitics as a teacher/tutor is to encourage students to consider why what they are learning is relevant to their lives, as well as being just a way to gain a qualification. |

| About Rachael: I have always had a passion for education and teaching. I am currently completing a Masters in Philosophy and Religion. In September I will be commencing a Secondary PGCE in Religious Education. I enjoy working with children and have sound knowledge of children's unique educational needs. When teaching children my overall aim is to help them recognise their true potential by developing their self esteem and confidence and providing them with the necessary skills to tackling their work more independently and positively. |
Teaching Experience: Over the past three years I have worked as a literacy tutor and supervisor for the charity Springboard for Children. Throughout this time I have obtained accreditation from the Open College Network in teaching children with literacy needs. I am able to plan lessons, set IEP's (Individual Educational Plan), structure my time effectively and provide lessons which are multi-sensory and child specific. I have taught children aged between five and eleven with a range of learning difficulties, e.g. dyslexia, behavioural, autistic, English as a second language and those that simply need a booster. I find teaching children with special educational needs (SEN) extremely rewarding. |
Tutoring Approach: After assessing the child's current literacy abilities I will devise an Individual Education Plan (IEP). This will outline their current skills and provide long and short term targets for the literacy tuition. I adopt a synthetic phonics approach to teaching. Emphasis is placed on letter sounds opposed to sight vocabulary. I've found that Synthetic Phonics work well for those children with SEN and beginning readers. I first teach children the letter sounds and then help them blend these sounds together to form words. This process eventually aids children to construct the pronunciation for themselves; allowing them to tackle unfamiliar words they meet in text independently. |
