About Barry:
I'm currently training for a PGCE, with the aim of becoming a GCSE and A-level Science (Biology) Teacher. I'm a passionate and enthusiastic person with a strong enjoyment of science. My particular passions lie in microbiology and immunology, although I also enjoy physics. Biology has always fascinated me, and I am committed and dedicated to learn more about the current field of research. I am a very sociable person and enjoy making new friends and communicating to a wide range of people. In my spare time I practice thai-boxing, and often take classes.

Teaching Experience:

I have participated in my university study help scheme, and have helped two students achieve excellent grades in their first year modules. I have just completed my degree, however what I lack in experience I make up for in knowledge, passion, awareness and commitment, and I feel that my age is a positive factor in enabling me to associate better with those studying at lower key stages such as GCSE. I think that my enjoyment for the subject is the most important thing, since others will only want to learn if they can see that it is an enjoyable and rewarding subject.

I have also taught classes in thai-boxing as mentioned above, as I often help my trainer out and am training for an official qualification. Teaching thai-boxing is immensely difficult as it requires clear explanation, adapting to various types of people and communicating with them as individuals.

Tutoring Approach:

My priority is to approach the student in the way that works best for them, whether it is audio, visual or kinetic. I find that everyone is taught differently, and the requirements for each student is different. Thus I put emphasis on helping the student identify their weaknesses first, and then build on it. I also instill confidence by showing a student their strengths clearly, and giving them a positive goal to work forward to. Whether it's a potential future career, or simply adding relevence of the subject to their life, I find that it is important to find an approach that works before diving in.

I would work relatively informally with the student at first, honing in on the key points of the syllabus to tackle. Once this is done, I would then bring material to work through, relevent to the particular study topic. As well as this, I would provide help with essays, coursework or other components, and would encourage the student to email me if they have any urgent questions between tutorial sessions. Above all, I will ensure that I give the student 100% of my effort, and only request that they do the same.

About Wasim:
Highly enthusiastic, motivated, and conscientious final year undergraduate student in Aerospace Engineering. As a student at University, I have been passing my examinations with 'First Class'. Moreover, I have obtained an effective average of over 80% throughout my whole course of study.

I am extremely efficient, reliable and able to adapt to people of all backgrounds and cultures. I have excellent time keeping skills and look forward to planning ahead. I am currently tutoring a large number of GCSE, A/L and University students on group and individual basis.

Teaching Experience:

I have been working for First-Tutors, UK-Tutors and Home-Tutors for more than two years now. Since then, I have been tutoring students at four main levels - GCSEs, A/Ls and University 1st & 2nd Year.
I have also been a teacher for some time at my past school where I taught Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics for GCE A/L students. I could not continue teaching there because I had to continue my higher education.
Two years ago, I Voluntarily taught GCSE, GCE O/L and A/L Mathematics and Science subjects for students with genuine interest in their studies. These students have produced excellent results in their examinations.

The majority (about 70%) of my students have attained 'A' grade in the subjects for which I have been a tutor. The rest have attained 'B' and 'C' (minority) grades. There haven't been any grades less than a 'C' ever since I have been a tutor. I think this is a phenomenal record and I have been working hard to keep this standard of teaching at its highest level.

Tutoring Approach:

I approach students in many ways, this depends on the student's character, his learning abilities and how well he knows that particular subject. I would always be very friendly with the tutee and get to know where he stands in the subject(s). There will a faster rate of teaching with regular homework given to students to ensure that they understand what they will be taught. As the exams approach it will be a matter of fast track revision, doing past papers and going though marking schemes. I strongly believe that this would increase the student's ability and confidence, and thus leading to better performance in their examinations. In short, good results would be assured for student with genuine interest.

About Philip:
I entered teaching in 2004 as a second career, as I was eager for a change and new challenges. I originally studied Engineering at university, which is highly relevant to my choice to specialise in teaching Physics. I have spent the bulk of my career before teaching working in IT.

Teaching Experience:

2004 - 2008 - Wilson's School, Wallington, Surrey
I qualified as a teacher in 2004/2005 by completing a Graduate Training programme. Wilson's is a selective boys school, and I was used to teaching students who regularly achieved high grades. I have also completed placements at other, non-selective schools.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that one-to-one tutoring can be very beneficial in many cases, as it encourages the student to focus in a way that may not always be possible in a classroom situation. I feel that time spent with the tutor should be used to maximum advantage, so I am more than prepared to set extra work for the pupil to do at home. I will then mark this work in my own time, and if necessary go through it with the student.

About Bryan:
My name is Bryan, I am a 35 year old Scottish man. I have over 14 years experience in IT and worked all over the world as an IT Professional. I am very patient, and can communicate well at all levels, with all age groups, and with all skill levels. I enjoy working with people and helping them to understand how to develop their own potential. I am equally comfortable helping primary school children as mature adults who are interested in developing some basic computer skills.
Tutoring works best when the student is in a relaxed environment, so if you would like tutoring in your own home, i can provide that for you.

Teaching Experience:

I have 14 years of IT experience, 10 years of this has been in senior roles where training, teaching and development of less experienced staff or "newbies" are an integral part of my job. I have worked with people from all over the world, so i am very good at speaking clearly and understandably so you will get the most from my tuition. I am happy to provide a copy of employment history, CV, references, certificates upon request.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe there is no such thing in IT as a stupid question, it takes confidence and self-belief on your part to develop new skills. I can make the tuition as complex or as basic as you would like it to be - you decide. I believe that the best way to train is to discuss with you first, exactly what you want to use the training for. Once I establish your aim, combined with other factors, such as your age, learning capacity, current level of experience, i can tailor the training to your individual needs.

About Victoria:
I am 25 years old and have recently moved to York to start part-time postgraduate study in English literature. I really enjoy teaching and working with young people, and I believe I'm a good motivator as well as an organised, efficient educator.

Teaching Experience:

I have spent the last 3 years teaching EFL in a public senior high school in Japan with the JET Programme. I also taught EFL in a Chinese high school for six months.

As an undergraduate student I volunteered at a homework club for local secondary school students, and in my vacation time I was employed as a group leader for a drama workshop company, typically leading a group of a dozen teenagers at a time.

Tutoring Approach:

In our first tutorial I'd like to familiarise myself with the work you are being set at school/uni etc. and see some examples of your writing. We'll also talk about what your weak/strong areas are and discuss what you need to work on. By the second tutorial I will have made an outline plan of how we'll study together. I'll cover not only the content required for any exams you are sitting, but also exam techniques and essay writing techniques. I'm confident that as I get to know you I'll be able to tailor my approach and materials to suit your individual learning style and your personality. My aim is for you to enjoy studying and to get top results!

Subjects: English  |  Politics  |  History
Availability: Weekends / Weekdays (evenings)
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online

About Paul:
I have recently completed a BA(Hons) in History at Oxford University.

I am a friendly and outgoing person who has a keen passion in History, Politics and English. Having just finished my degree and gone into work for the Oxford University Student Union (OUSU), the opportunities for me to further my interests in these subjects has been somewhat limited. I hope that becoming a tutor will offer me the opportunity to carry on with these interests, as well as providing help and support for students who need it.

Teaching Experience:

I have had work experience in a secondary school in Lancashire, which involved both shadowing teachers and leading sections of discussion within classrooms.
I have acted as a mentor to students in years below me at school, as well as having years experience as a secondary instructor at a local Ju Jitsu club.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that sessions should be informal yet structured. I want make sure that students feel comfortable coming to tutorial sessions, without seeing them as a burden or yet another work load that they have to complete.
I will be aiming to complement work done within classrooms as well as concentrating on areas that students feel weaker on. I hope that through one-on-one sessions, I can offer assistance that cannot be provided with a school or 6th form, and that I can help students to develop the necessary skill sets and confidence to thrive in the classroom.

About Lisa:
I am a second year phd student at Queens. My area of interest is 18th century Irish history but also have an interest in European history. I wish to gain more teaching/tutoring experience as I hope to go into lecturing when I complete my studies.

Teaching Experience:

I worked as atutor for two years in Mary Immaculate College, Limerick when I was doing my MA in history. I thought six groups of 10 students in aspects of Irish, European and American history. I also corrected course work and supervised exams. Last semester, I did some tutoring work at Queens, specialising in the 19th Ireland module and corrected some essays.

Tutoring Approach:

Its important to make the student(s) feel at ease and get a full understanding of what their problem areas are etc. I would also plan to write up a work schedule with the student and assign a certain amount of work with him/her. I would also try and provide as much feedback as possible to the student and hopefully have a good working relationship with him/her.
