| About Claire: I am a fully qualified Primary teacher. For the past two years I have been living in Japan teaching ESL, my youngest students were two and my eldest students were 83. I met and taught a wide range of people which always made my teaching experiences interesting and fun. I am fun and friendly, I take teaching English seriously but always adapt and present the lesson to each student differently in order to make it as fun as possible but with maximum learning output for each student. |
Teaching Experience: I studied Primary Education for four years, during this time I had many placements in primary schools around Scotland. I taught as a qualified teacher for one year in Dumfries and Galloway. I worked in Japan for two years, I spent one year teaching in a private English conversation school in the north of Japan. My youngest student being two and the eldest eighty three. Here I taught group lessons of up to four people. I also did special travel and tourism lessons preparing students who were going to study abroad. I then spent six months as a lead teacher in an international preschool, here I taught all academic subjects through english to Japanese children. English was there second language. |
Tutoring Approach: I have a very fun and friendly approach as I like to make the atmosphere of the lesson as relaxed as possible. I feel that if the teacher and student are both relaxed learning will be more effective, however I do take teaching seriously. I will adapt all lessons to the individual student and more than welcome feedback, be it positive or negative. In order to adapt the next lesson for the student. |

Types of Tutoring: From their home / Online
| About Malcolm: I am a native English speaker living in the West Midlands near Birmingham. Before I became a teacher I had a varied career in both retail and as a vehicle technician. I am married with 2 grown children and 1 grandchild. I came into teaching late in life and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. My varied background means I can help students with technical English as well as academic English. |
Teaching Experience: I have been teaching for the last 5 years both in the classroom and online. I received and online teaching accreditation 3 years ago from GSU and last year gained the Level 4 subject specialism. I have worked in the community and in formal college environments and experience of preparing students for the citizenship examinations. I have designed courses for groups of Chinese translaters of technical English for the locomotive industry as well as furniture fabricaters. |
Tutoring Approach: When teaching online many students tend to be autonomous in their approach to study therefore I tend to facilitate rather than teacher. I prefer to assess the individual students requirement and plan a scheme of work to suit the individual by mutual agreement. |

View Katherine's Profile

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Katherine: I am a recent graduate of Edinburgh University, with a BSc. (Hons) in maths. I am a full time maths maths tutor. I am willing to travel to your home to teach, and have an enhanced disclosure. |
Teaching Experience: I have been a professional tutor for one year, having enjoyed working part time as a tutor previously. In the past two years, I have tutored over 20 students, and seen an improvement not only in their grades, but also in their confidence and enjoyment of the the subject. I have helped pupils with a predicted grade of a 5 realise a final grade 2 at Standard Grade, after just 5 months of tuition. I have also tutored at both Wallace College and Basil Paterson College, running Easter revision courses for groups of up to 8 students at a time, at Standard Grade and Higher level. While most of my private tutoring is in the students home, I have also tutored within the school setting at Castlebrae High School, and I spent a couple of weeks on a placement in a Primary School as part of my degree. |
Tutoring Approach: I tend to work towards the exam, unless this is not the main intent of the tutoring, I use a mixture of the students school textbooks with past papers, revision aids, and materials I have prepared myself. I like to begin by highlighting the weaker topics, improving knowledge of these, and then working on exam technique and exam style questions. When required I change this approach to suit the student, so if the sessions are more about improving confidence, I will spend more time on fewer topics, and try to make these as enjoyable as possible. |

| About Caroline: I have a PhD in Astrophysics from the University of Oxford. Before that, I completed a six year MSc course in Physics & Astronomy at the University of Leiden, The Netherlands. Currently I am working as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of London. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught many different types of people over a variety of subjects. For example, I have experience in tutoring Physics students (both full-time and mature) at degree level in Physics, Astrophysics, and various software packages (Matlab, Mathematica, IDL, Excel). I've taught children from the age of 7 upwards in Astrophysics. Furthermore, for years I have taught adults of the age of 50+ the very basics of using a personal computer, including using email and internet, and software packages such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint). |
Tutoring Approach: I am an extremely patient and considerate tutor, adept at communicating with people of all ages. For A-level and degree level students, I begin by identifying areas of weakness and developing a strategy and a sequence of lesson plans that are matched to the student's needs. I work with the pupil to set realistic and swift targets for improvement. My tuition allows for immediate, positive and corrective feedback to help the pupil quickly improve and permanently stay on track. I can also help with coursework and preparation for forthcoming examinations. For casual learners in IT, I can visit their homes to work with them on their own computer. I can guide them from the very basics to advanced concepts such as creating computational spreadsheets in Excel, or the principles of programming. Lesson plans will be formed in communication with the student, and completely adapted to their needs and wishes. |

Although I may not have vast experience, I bring a determined and pragmatic approach to gaining the best results for my students whilst maintaining a sense of enjoyment. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach is to gain a friendly rapport with my pupils and then assess exactly what they need help with. This would involve looking over the objectives and deadlines of the course involved and formulating a plan with the student. I would then assess the students strengths/weaknesses and anxieties to determine where our initial focus would lie. |

| About Christine: i have specialized in personal tutoring for 15 yrs.A qualified teacher i decided that private teaching was more rewarding and i could make a difference to students experiencing difficulties for whatever reason in their studies.I have three chidren of teenage years and have experienced first hand the challenges they face in this life changing period of their lives and the effect it can have on their education.I believe that every pupil has the ability to achieve if time is given to unlock their potential. This i think is one of the benefits of private tuition. |
Teaching Experience: Qualified teacher specializing in private tuition for 15 yrs.At the time my baby daughter spent a lot of time in hospital and private teavching gave me the flexibility i needed.I found it so rewardion i decided to concentrate on that rather than return to the classroom.I offer intense examination skills as well as curriculum based teaching and teach gcse courses outside of school if the pupil is unable to take the subject of choice due to difficulties with options. |
Tutoring Approach: I always offer a free assessment session with tutee and parents to determine problems and needs. It is also very important that the pupil should feel comfortable with me .I then prepare a personal learning plan and if gcse or a level work closely with what is being taught in class providing skills neede for coursework and exams.I am also avaiable by phione or email if problems occur between tuitions. The sessions either take place at my home or the tutees wherever is most convenient for pupils and parents.I teach in a relaxed atmoshere where it is easy to ask questions and continually assure the tutee that its ok to get things wrong as that is why i am there. |
