Tutoring Approach:

I like to try to make learning a fun experience so that it is not a chore. I feel that if students begin to enjoy learning they will be able to learn more independently.

About Andrew:
Hi,

My name is Andrew and I am a fully qualified primary teacher with a B.Ed (HONS) from Lancaster University. I achieved qualified teacher status in 1992 and my most recent police records check was successfully undertaken within the past three months.

Andrew

About Katherine:
My name is Katherine Nobbs, and I'm a 26-year old graduate currently living in London. I am employed full-time by the European Centre for Minority Issues, a minority rights advocacy organization, where responsibilities range from coordination of major publications to conflict resolution work in European neighbourhood states, such as Kosovo and Georgia. I also receive funding from the University of Cambridge to act as a consultant on individual projects.

I have spent five years in higher education and have studied in depth a range of subjects, notably, politics, government, international relations and law. I have performed to a consistently high standard in all areas and at all stages of my academic career.

I have also debated in competitions at national and international level.

Teaching Experience:

While I have no formal teaching experience, I have spent over 60 hours leading seminars at university level.

I have also taught debating classes to students of the College of Law and the Middle Temple.

Tutoring Approach:

I am passionate about the subjects I have studied and would relish the opportunity of engaging with students at all levels. I pride myself on being well-prepared for new challenges and would approach tutoring with the same dedication and enthusiasm that I have applied to other areas of my academic and professional life.

I believe that a good tutor should understand the challenges of approaching a new subject, or of mastering an old one, and encourage and stimulate their student accordingly. I do not believe in an approach to education that criticises rather than rewards. If a student was unresponsive, I would endeavour to find new approaches that spoke to the individual more directly. In cases where a student grasped the material readily, I would be delighted to stretch her or his capabilities with more complex material, even if this was slightly outside the relevant curriculum, although this would of course be pending the approval of their parent or guardian.

About Noor:
I am a 22 year old medical student currently in my fifth year of study at UCL. I thoroughly enjoy working with a wide range of people of all ages and from all backgrounds, and enjoy making a difference in peoples' education. I believe I have good experience in doing so and strong interpersonal skills from my interaction with a variety of patients every day. I would enjoy getting to know my tutee & making the learning experience enjoyable.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored peers in the lower years at medical school.
I have also assisted teaching at a primary school.
Before coming to university I used to help out at the local Sunday Arabic school.
All of these have been volunteer work and unpaid.

Tutoring Approach:

I hope to bring a fairly relaxed yet productive approach to tutoring. I like to ensure my tutee is comfortable and settled and then starting with the basic principles one can gradually build on these until the tutee feels more confident and able. In particular to exams such as GCSE and A-levels the tutoring will be very much focused to meet the required syllabus. I can also give advice for anyone interested in entering medicine and help with UCAS applications and personal statements.

About Philip Charles:
I am 26 and at present I am a Director at the Adam Smith Institute, an influential Westminster think-tank. Last year, I finished an MSc in International Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and previous to this I studied History at University College London.

I am hard working and determined to excel, skills that I will pass on to whoever I tutor. I know what it takes to succeed and will work beyond what is expected to enthuse this confidence in to those that I teach.

Teaching Experience:

While at LSE, I tutored another fellow student from Japan who had only a limited grasp of the English Language. I took this extremely seriously and he managed to pass the MSc from being in a position in which his professors were certain he would fail. Outside of academics I have spent a number of years teaching tennis to children and adults of varying skills and abilities.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to teaching is based on two fundamental premises. The first is that it is absolutely essential to find satisfaction in the learning process. This may not come through the actual material that needs to be learnt and it is up to the tutor to inspire in the student the confidence to succeed. As your tutor, I will lay down the learning structure that will cement this through detailed lesson plans.

The second premise is that supervised practise testing is imperative. This needs to be followed by a thorough evaluation of the results, in order to understand where improvements need to be made, in both knowledge and approach. As your tutor I will be available outside of teaching time to answer questions by email and phone, there will be no extra cost for this service.

About Asad:
I am a 20 year old student and I'm currently in my 2nd year of studying medicine at King's College London. I consider myself to be an enjoyable person to be around, and I'm always keen to help fellow students in achieving their academic potential. Being a member of MENSA, I'm always up for mental activities and enjoy the challenge. One of the greatest benefits of living in London is the multicultural nature of the city, and like to interact with people from all cultures and backgrounds.

Teaching Experience:

Took part in the new "Mentor" scheme brought into my secondary school, where i interacted with students that weren't achieving their potential in terms of education, motivating them.

I'm currently tutoring peers from the lower years at medical school.

Tutoring Approach:

I feel that i will be a well rounded tutor, as I'm very patient yet will get the job done. The most important aspect for exams such as GCSEs and A levels, in my opinion, is the exam technique. I will ensure the tutee feels confident answering exam questions relating to their syllabus, while also thinking "outside the box".

About Stéphanie:
Bilingual Eng/Fr graduate with a BA (Hons) in French Studies, majoring in literature and translating, I am vivacious, energetic, outgoing, understanding and I love passing my knowledge on. I also speak very good German and Spanish.
I have just moved back to the UK after 7 years spent in France, where I was educated and obtained a French Baccalaurat (Literature).
I am passionate about languages and want to learn Italian, Arabic, Russian, Polish and Japanese.

Teaching Experience:

7 years teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL).
3 years working for Wall Street Institute and IFG Langues, both in Paris, as a business and conversational English for group and individual lessons, also a level tester.
3 years teaching French.
2 years teaching Spanish and German.

Tutoring Approach:

Depending on whom I am teaching, I use different methods as everyone learns differently.
For children I use music, images, games and other entertaining methods to make the learning process as enjoyable as possible.
I use similar methods for adults, depending upon their level and their needs/goals, and I always try to use as little of their mother tongue as possible. I like to use bilingual books, and put people into a "real-life" situation by discussing things that are relevant to them; to do this, I like to get to know my students well and make sure that they are progressing as they would like to.
I ask each student to buy a vocabulary book, which they will write new words in, and at the beginning of each session I ask them to make a few sentences using the words chosen in the previous session.

About Ralph:
I have just completed a Masters course in Biology (Integrative Bioscience) at the University of Oxford, and previously gained first class honours in Natural Science (Zoology) at the University of Cambridge. In addition to this biologically centred University Education I have recent (2004) A-levels in Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Fine Art. So, I am very used to being in an academic environment and understand the needs of students at different levels of their education. I am always very happy to share the knowledge and understanding that I have picked up with others.

Teaching Experience:

Currently tutoring a student in preparation for GCSE mathematics, I have helped to prepare A-level students for (successful) interviews at Oxbridge colleges, and am keen to widen my teaching experience.

Tutoring Approach:

Firstly I would like to discuss with the student what they are hoping to gain from the tuition and then explore their current level of understanding in order to plan what would most benefit them.

The tuition will probably consist mainly of discussion that engages the student's imagination and understanding of the subjects and highlights areas that might require improvement. Practical exercises will then be used where appropriate, with critical appraisal of the student's work. The tuition may be geared towards some particular goal (exams/interviews etc.) and in this case the desired end result will of course be kept in mind.

About Amanda:
I am a Fine Art Graduate and practising artist living in Redland, Bristol willing to offer support, advice and tutoring to GCSE and A-Level ar students, whether it be preparing for the art exam or wanting some extra help with the big workload which is coursework.

I remember very well being overwhelmed by the amount of sketchbooks, critical appraisals and time which had to go into my coursework at school and making every bit count for those extra marks. After being through the mill with A-levels, a foundation course in art & design and a degree in fine art I will be able to offer some advice and help whether it be with practical techniques such as drawing or with critical analysis to try and help you figure out which direction your work is going.

Teaching Experience:

I have previously been a mentor to secondary level students (year 7) who had just started school, offering them support and a sympathetic ear within the school environment. This role was during my time at school and one which helped the students to intergrate into their new surroundings and voice any problems they had to someone other than a teacher.

I run my own part-time jewellery design business which has been established for over a year.

Tutoring Approach:

My main practice is heavily focused on drawing and I use methods such as printmaking and textiles to create my work. I have a strong background in drawing, particuarly life drawing, which I still enjoy doing.

I am also happy to discuss work and offer practical criticism as well as dealing with contentual issues relating to art work based on art theory and history. I have a current and up to date knowledge of the current art scene and reguarly take visits around the UK to keep myself in the loop.

About John:
I am 24 and currently studying for my MA in ensemble physical theatre at Huddersfield University. I play 3 musical instruments, enjoy basketball and chess, and have a keen interest in the arts.

Teaching Experience:

During my two years supply teaching, I have taught at degree level, A-level, GCSE level, and below in a variety of settings from pupil referral units, to private schools. I have also given one-to-one piano, violin and singing lessons.

Tutoring Approach:

My young, fresh, and engaging approach to teaching comes from my experiences hating school and two years of supply teaching following the completion of my first degree. About Kathleen:
I am a Canadian graduate student at the Sotheby's Institute of Art. I am currently working towards my MA in Art Business. My BA (Honours) is in Art History and Criticism, and I took many courses in media studies and comparative literature as well.
I have always enjoyed taking English and literature courses and I am a tough, but fair editor of papers. I have also built up a lot of study skills and strategies that can be really helpful, especially for art students who have slide based exams. Having gone through one degree already, I am happy to help in general undergraduate university prep and study skill development as well.

Teaching Experience:

Throughout my undergraduate career I was a mentor for incoming university freshmen and I held tutoring and exam preparation sessions for comparative literature. I have also led student-run study groups for art history courses. Most of my teaching experience and skills comes from recently having finished a degree and having the whole experience and my study skills fresh in my mind!

Tutoring Approach:

When I am taking on a student, I really like to identify specific issues. I like to start by talking with the tutee to identify what they think are their issues and then I will read a sample of their work to understand their style and approach. the techniques that I use vary with the topic. For example, to prepare for an art history exam, I will work with the student on memorization techniques for slides. For English issues, I like to use visual diagrams to connect ideas, and for papers, I like to do a full reading of the paper and then sit down to identify re-occurring grammatical issues.
I am a fun tutor and I really like to work with students who are passionate about art or English- even if they are having difficulties. I am really patient and happy to work through issues at the student's own pace.

I am a very good editor (for both content and spelling & grammar) and can edit high school essays/uni papers/ and graduate work.

About Beata:
I am a 24-year-old PGDE (secondary, German, Italian) student from Dundee University. I have recently graduated at Napier University in Edinburgh from Languages and Tourism Management.
I am a confident and sociable individual who likes coming across different cultures and people.
Biggest passion is travelling and I do some tour guiding occasionally.
I love the Mediterranean cuisine especially Italian food and a big fan of salsa.
I am a keen swimmer and handball player (but non-professional).

Teaching Experience:

I used to go to a German immersion school so I have an excellent command of German and I have spent a semester in Munich, Germany.
I have studied Italian since I was 17 and spent some time in the country.
I have been tutoring children and student in English and German for some years. When I moved to Scotland I started offering German and Italian lessons for adults and young people.
Since then I had worked with children in Berlin improving their knowledge of German.
Some time ago I tutored a Spanish pupil in German in Edinburgh and most recently I have spent some month in Italy working in a private language school teaching English and German.

Tutoring Approach:

When I started tutoring some years ago I had a different approach than today.
Being very sociable I thought I would have a great time while helping others getting on with the languages.
Later on I became more and more reflective and realised that I unconsciously apply theories into my teaching and used methodology described in books that I have never actually read.
I have always liked to see things progressing because I see it as a mean of understanding more of the world around us. Improvement is seen by me as a result of putting small pieces of a puzzle together that at the end become a whole.
