About Lachlan:
I am an Antipodean and Continental graduate in German, English and Politics with an International House qualification to teach English as a foreign language to adults.

I am fluent in German and well-informed about German life and culture, having lived in German-speaking countries for ten years. I have worked in Germany (Osnabruck & Speyer), Belgium (Antwerp) and Italy (Florence) and have a working knowledge of Italian, basic French and a rudimentary grasp of other major European languages. I like to think of myself as an aspiring European.

For the last 7 years I have been engaged on a tertiary-level research project charting the reception of British and Irish authors in Europe, which has resulted in the publication of 15 volumes to date in the series of the same name. My role has been mainly one of liaison between the editors and contributors to the series (some 450 individuals all told) as well as organizational, research and editing responsibilities.

I am also a freelance researcher, writer and exhibition curator. My specialty and primary experience has been in organizing international educational touring exhibitions of contemporary social and political cartoons.

Teaching Experience:
I have taught German, English and Politics in England (GSCE and A-level), and English as a foreign language at all levels in grammar schools in Austria and Germany.

I also taught English as a foreign language -primarily to trainee German teachers of English - and for Special Purposes (law, business studies, social sciences) as well as British cultural studies at the University of Osnabruck, Lower Saxony, for eight years.

Tutoring Approach:
I believe patience, appropriate pace and an empathetic attentiveness to an individual's learning needs are essential attributes for anyone hoping to facilitate the assimilation of information and its successful use by others. I like to think that I have these qualities as a tutor, as well as a keen sense of how much successful learning depends on the motivation, enthusiasm and interest in the subject by both teacher and learner.

I much prefer one-to-one or small-group tutoring, particularly in foreign languages, because I believe the intensity of experience it provides is the closest thing to direct engagement with a foreign language in the natural context in which it is spoken. This is in no small part based on my own experience as a foreign-language learner.

I am a recent graduate with a 2.1 in English Literature from Cambridge University. I have always had a passion for reading and writing and this has translated into an enthusiasm for arts subjects at A-Level and Degree Level. I have tutored many pupils of varying ages and abilities. I currently tutor pupils ranging from six-year-olds embarking on verbal and non-verbal reasoning, 13 year olds preparing for common entrance, AS students struggling with exam preparation right through to degree level English students. I greatly enjoy teaching such a wide variety of people, encouraging all of them to approach their subjects with confidence and enthusiasm.

It is important to provide all of the students with structure and consistency, whilst keeping the lessons active and interesting. For example, I have recently tutored a primary age girl in literacy skills. This involved using phonetics and interactive methods, such as songs and games, to encourage her to be enthusiastic about reading and writing. Structure and regularity in our lessons improved her confidence quickly and her ability increased dramatically with the use of a well-organised and fun phonetics course. Towards the end of my teaching her, she got into a new school, where she was provided with excellent phonetics tuition to continue her studies. Similarly, with one of my 13+ pupils, frequent assessment of his progress using test papers and consistent encouragement of his creativity with projects and presentations gave him a varied, but nevertheless structured, approach which helped him to go into the exams feeling deservedly assured about his own ability.

I come from a family of four siblings, two of whom now have young children. I am used to babysitting and caring for three children under 6 at a time and therefore have good experience of interacting with primary age pupils. I am widely experienced in working with young people of many ages and am aware of the structure, personal attention and encouragement that teaching requires.

Tutoring Approach:
I am keen to pass on the enthusiasm I have for this subject and my other main academic interests to tutees of all ages. I recognise the pressures involved in preparing for academic examinations at various levels and believe in the great benefits of one-to-one teaching in swiftly developing the tutee's understanding, confidence and individual ability. Textbook/note based. I will ask what area the student is having difficulties in beforehand, read up on the specific area, then go through their text book with them.

I believe patience is essential, and as such am very patient and try to explain things step by step so the student can understand fully.

About Ann:
I am a friendly, mature and approachable mother of two. As a mature student, I am very aware of how difficult study can be when one has other commitments. Equally, as a support worker with people with learning difficulties, I have learned how important it is to tailor learning to fit an individual's needs. Support work demands a person-centred approach which, I believe, is transferrable to student-centred learning. While achieving good marks, (goals and targets) is important, an interest in and love of the subject as part of an individual's development is also important.

Teaching Experience:
I am a beginner as a tutor (apart from classroom experience gained in my CELTA course). While my own children were at primary school, I did voluntary work as a learning assistant. This involved 'paired reading' on a one-to-one level with children and working with small groups in arts and crafts.

Tutoring Approach:
Unlike 'whole class' teaching in a school environment, I believe tutoring ought to be a golden opportunity for a tutor to discover and aid the tutee to discover his/her strengths and weaknesses and to build a lesson round that. The tutor should be able to let the tutee learn and gain confidence at his/her own pace, give support and help when needed but know when to stand back and let the tutee achieve. I believe individualised learning with different resources (traditional texts, pictures, projects) can be used depending on the tutee's needs and preferred methods of learning. For tutees embarking on traditional courses of study, I am perfectly happy to follow set syllabuses.
