About Musa:
I like the basic presentation approach. By this I mean making complex ideas look simple and comprehensive enough for the slowest learner to grasp the concept of a particular topic or subject. I believe in thorough dissemination of a topic so that it is understood by all. I believe teaching must be simple and fun and people learning a particular subject must have a craving for learning the subject. therefore presentation of a lecture must be simple and fun and interesting, and this is how i like to teach.

Teaching Experience:

I have had a seven month teaching experience at senior secondary school level. I help prepare students taking there A' level examinations. I have organised private tutoring sessions amongst university students.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe everyone has a capability to grasp a concept or learn an idea. I believe we all have different levels of capabilities, some grasp an idea quickly and easily, others take a bit of time, but whatever the levels of capabilities, we are all capable of learning. My approach to tutoring is based on these beliefs. Therefore I tend to take the time to know my tutees, and their different approaches to what I have to offer. The way they perceive the subject and their interestedness and willingness to learn the subject is also important. Therefore my approach is to make the subject interesting and appreciate that the tutees all have different levels of understanding.

About Emma:
I am a mature, reliable and intelligent 18 year old girl, who has just completed A Level Maths and A Level Further Maths, both at A grade. I attended City of London School for Girls, where my capacity for understanding and applying mathematics was recognised by many internal and external awards. I am now taking a gap year, and will be attending Cambridge University this autumn. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you require any further details.

Many thanks,

Emma Makinson

Teaching Experience:

While still at school, at the request of my teachers, I began working with younger children, mentoring and tutoring them in Mathematics. I was been hugely successful here, particularly in the case of many children who were falling behind - I helped them to generate an enthusiasm for the subject. I have also been tutoring children from 6 to 16 years old commercially for the past two years, again with huge success. Although I have usually been employed for maths tuition, I have often extended my hours to provide additional support in many other aspects of my clients' educations. In particular, I have prepared many young people for success in 11+, 13+ and sixth form entrance exams; I also have coached many for the relevant interviews. My rates are reasonable: I charge 20-30 pounds per hour (as noted), although this is calculated on the assumption that I would be travelling to a location in North or Central London. Further to the information here listed, I have also spent six months this year working in the United States. Although employed full time at a literary agency, I spent some time preparing students for SAT Reasoning tests and subjects tests in Mathematics - and have an excellent understanding of what is required for these exams.

Tutoring Approach:

I aim to build on an understanding between myself and the student, to guide them through the more challenging aspects of mathematics. I hope to develop in a student the ability to perform well by pairing a good ground knowledge of basic rules with a more conceptual approach to mathematics.

About Samuel:
See what some of my previous students have to say about me:

Samuel has a quiet and unassuming manner which worked well with our lively teenage son who had previously been a little disinterested in Maths. Our son commented:- "that he had understood more from Samuel in three months than during his entire GCSE course at full time school ".
I commend Samuel highly. He is honest, friendly, reliable, quiet and exceptionally well qualified. He has a very good understanding of a child's needs and personality. Our son's result speaks for itself.
(John Jeffrey, Wallingford)

In my son's own words - "I wish all my teachers at school would take the same approach, I am able to understand & grasp his teaching methods clearly."
(Etrily Williams, Didcot)

You were patient and calm in all your dealings with Lucy.
Thank you for your help and best wishes for the future.
(Rhonda Telford, Wootton)

We are absolutely delighted with the work Mr Thewlis has done with our daughter. She has gained enormous confidence through his patience and wonderfully clear instruction. Never an academic high flier, she has moved on leaps and bounds through his help. We have had outside help before, but none with the success she has achieved with Samuel. We have the highest confidence in him and would recommend him to any friend.
(Dr Bart van Es, Oxford)

I found Samuel to be pleasant, patient and thorough and my son was pleased to find that he was able to discuss some topics in which he was particularly interested, at a greater depth than was actually required for the exams, during the lessons. I am pleased to say that my son achieved A grades in Physics, Chemistry and Biology on the higher tier papers this summer, following his revision sessions with Samuel.
(Lynda Mayne, Blewbury)

Samuel's tuition helped me to understand and achieve a good grade in a subject that I found difficult. He was easy to talk to and willing to go over and over concepts until I understood. Without Samuel's help, I would not have achieved the grade I did.
(Georgia Manning, Didcot)

I think that Samuel helped me significantly in my physics work, having the chance to work one on one with someone that clearly understands the subject to a great depth is far better than the class room environment.
(Elliot Gasper, Harwell)

Teaching Experience:

I am a qualified teacher, with four years' experience of teaching at secondary school. Since then, I have concentrated on my strength, which is one-to-one teaching. For almost four years, I have helped students of all levels of ability prepare for their exams. Get in touch to discuss how I can help you too.

Tutoring Approach:

It can be easy to get lost in a class. Private tuition, though, is all about you. What you need, what you find confusing, what you want to learn.

Come to a session with an area you want to go over, a topic you don't understand or just some homework that you don't get. I promise you that no question will ever be too stupid, no matter how many times you think you have asked it before. We will go over it until we find a way that makes sense to you.

When you don't understand a topic, it is usually because there are some gaps in your knowledge further back - especially in subjects like maths and science. I will help you to find those gaps and fill them in. This often means that topics that used to be just a confusing mass of rules and equations suddenly start to make sense.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Subjects: Life Science  |  Maths  |  Physics  |  Chemistry  |  Biology  |  Art
Availability: Weekends / Weekdays
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online

About Ralph:
I have just completed a Masters course in Biology (Integrative Bioscience) at the University of Oxford, and previously gained first class honours in Natural Science (Zoology) at the University of Cambridge. In addition to this biologically centred University Education I have recent (2004) A-levels in Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Fine Art. So, I am very used to being in an academic environment and understand the needs of students at different levels of their education. I am always very happy to share the knowledge and understanding that I have picked up with others.

Teaching Experience:

Currently tutoring a student in preparation for GCSE mathematics, I have helped to prepare A-level students for (successful) interviews at Oxbridge colleges, and am keen to widen my teaching experience.

Tutoring Approach:

Firstly I would like to discuss with the student what they are hoping to gain from the tuition and then explore their current level of understanding in order to plan what would most benefit them.

The tuition will probably consist mainly of discussion that engages the student's imagination and understanding of the subjects and highlights areas that might require improvement. Practical exercises will then be used where appropriate, with critical appraisal of the student's work. The tuition may be geared towards some particular goal (exams/interviews etc.) and in this case the desired end result will of course be kept in mind.

Subjects: Media Studies  |  Reading & Writing skills  |  Biology  |  Computer Studies / I.T.  |  Japanese  |  French
Availability: Weekends / Weekdays
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online

About Nikki:
I am a 20 year old female university student studying a French and Japanese BA at Cardiff university. I am currently in my second year and I'm hoping to find some people who would like me to help them with their learning, because helping others to learn only reinforces what you already know, and I like to keep my brain active!

Teaching Experience:

At the moment I have no proper experience as a tutor, the closest I can claim to have had is helping my neighbour's children with ICT and helping my younger sister with French. I would like to try being a tutor as I've been told it's an enjoyable experience, and will give me some valuable experience for when I begin a teaching course after university.

Tutoring Approach:

I am willing to teach in a variety of ways, both online and offline, as well as helping you/your child to advance in the learning of your chosen subject.

I would begin by assessing how far the tutee has already progressed in the subject and try to work out any weak areas, and then continue by creating exercises and situations designed to try and improve in those areas.

For example; if I were tutoring the tutee in French and I found that their weakness was in the spoken language, I would have conversations with them and try to involve them in activities that use French language, such as watching French programmes, listening to French radio or the opportunity to speak with a native French speaker. I would also record the conversations so that the tutee could listen to them later and hear their own mistakes, then work on trying to correct
them.

If the tutoring were a completely online situation, I would communicate with the tutee via all methods of internet communication (IM, skype, e-mail) and use a similar approach to the one I would in person.
